Introduction

A disaster is an extreme disruption of the functioning of a society that causes

widespread human, material, or environmental losses that exceed the ability of the
affected society to cope using only its own resources. Events such as earthquakes,
floods, and cyclones, by themselves, are not considered disasters. Rather, they become
disasters when they adversely and seriously affect human life, livelihoods and property.
Disaster preparedness, therefore, seeks to prepare for and reduce these adverse
effects.
Disaster preparedness refers to measures taken to prepare for and reduce the
effects of disasters. That is, to predict and, where possible, prevent disasters, mitigate
their impact on vulnerable populations, and respond to and effectively cope with their
consequences.
The World Disasters Report (2015) says that disasters whether natural or manmade can strike at any time. In general, the response to a disaster in terms of relief and
rescue operations - after the event is very essential. However, if we are adequately
prepared, its possible to severely reduce the impact of a disaster. The impact can be
reduced through a good understanding of preventive actions, as well as having the
knowledge of certain life-saving tools and techniques, which when used at the time of
the event of disaster can control the total damage to life and belongings. The biggest
problem with the disasters is the suddenness and swiftness with which they arrive.
Hence, in order to reduce the severity of a disaster the response also has to equally
swift.

Almost all of us can think of several disasters that have occurred in the recent
past. Earthquakes, industrial accidents, oil-spills, forest-fires, terrorist activities etc. are
some of the more commonly encountered disasters.
Disasters themselves are not limited to specific parts of world, though, certain
areas might be more prone to certain specific type of disaster, e.g. area around Pacific
Rim is more prone to earthquakes, some countries are more
REVIEW OF LITERATURE

Over the years, different parts of the world had been victims of natural
calamities. Almost all parts of the world witnessed how massive the destruction would
be when the force of nature takes its arms against the citizens. Since then, different
nations have allot their resources and effort on how they can make themselves
prepared so that the negative impacts of such disasters will be lessened or even
prevented. This issue has been crucial since then, for it involves both the life and
property of every citizen. As its prime duty to serve and protect the people, every
government of such country should undertake measures to prepare their citizens so that
they can cope up with such disasters. Such preparedness measure involves the
establishment of evacuation sites, packing up relief goods, and emergency rescue
response teams. All of these factors are essential for an effective disaster risk reduction
and management.

Even though a disaster preparedness plan had been established, still, massive
disaster can prevail. Thus, the effectiveness of the disaster preparedness and
techniques should be given the top priority.

At present the need for disaster preparedness has become one of the major
concerns of the Philippine Government. Massive damage on both life and property
remains to occur when typhoons struck the archipelago an inevitable event due to the

geographic location of the Philippines bounded by the Pacific Ocean in the east where
weather disturbances are formed. At rate, 20 typhoons hit the country every year. It has
been said that typhoons and floods had been our ancient curse so protecting the
citizens from its consequences should be the number one concern of the Republic.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

This chapter contains the research design and the methodology use to
conduct this study. It incorporates the sampling technique, sources of data, the research
subjects, population of the study, the instrument utilized to gather data, as well as the
statistical tools employed in processing the data. This chapter is showing how the
researchers came up to the necessary data for this study and how these data were
analysed, interpreted, and presented in the easiest way possible.

Research Design
This study utilizes the descriptive correlational method of research to determine
the levels of awareness of intermediate in disaster risk reduction and management
prevention and mitigation components at Buhangin Elementary School.

Research Locale

The researchers will conduct the study at Buhangin Elementary School. It is a

public elementary school in the Butuan city Division.

Buhangin Elementary School (BES) is located along the national highway of

Baan 1 Butuan City Agusan del Norte which is 300 meters away from the city proper. It
can easily be reached from Ampayon to Baan through riding transportation such as
vehicles and multicabs, with a 10 minute ride.
