Managing the Safety Function
Safety experts play a crucial role because their decisions determine level of safety
among other workers. However, they should not be given more authority over decision. They are
experts, but the other segments of the company are much informed on the company activities
hence a need for consultation to arrive at an informed decision. The safety practitioner job is to
ensure optimal maintenance of occupational safety and health, thus, every risk that is potential,
actual or dormant should have counter mechanisms at hand to ensure successful addressing
(Friend and Kohn).
Safety goals should take precedence whenshould there exist a situation where they clash
with production goal exists. Human safety is much more important and cannot be compared with
improved organizational performance. Different individuals directly or indirectly connected to
the organization have different opinions on the matter. For instance, a banker is not concerned
with safety of employees, but the level of productivity in an organization to ensure loans are
repaid on time. Therefore, Tthe organization should therefore substitute any process or material
that could cause harm to ensure productivity of organization.
Management should ensure full participation of employees in initiating safety strategies.
This can be actualized by organizing workshops, where they can communicate their opinions on
different areas that need to be improved. Such endeavors should be makede legal requirement to
ensure that organizations management will not be reluctant in initiating safety programs.
Occupational health and safety haves changed over time. During the initial stages of developing
safety programs, the benefits of exposure to harmful substances were minimal. The risk of
developing occupational diseases decades ago was high because most countries were still
undergoing industrialization (Gibson). Currently, processes have been sophisticated, improving

occupational health and safety. In addition, development of acts such as OSHA has ensured
victims are compensated.
Young and older workers hold a different definition of safety. As earlier stated, decades
ago the processes of production involved great risk with little measures to reduce risksdangers.
This has changed over time with advancement of processes and the young generations have
access to safety information. These different perceptions on safety can be well handled by
organizing forums to discuss various safety aspects based on facts to ensure each party is
contended with the final decision.
