Goals: to enable the students to derive and to calculate (by Matlab) the spectra of semiconductor
optical processes using semi-classical formulation and finite difference method, if necessary.
1. Phenomena of elementary excitation in semiconductors:
From dielectric constant to effective medium theory,
Linkage to elementary excitation: Exciton, Phonon, Polariton
2. Classic Approach
Linkage between the harmonic oscillator model to dielectric constant
Coupling among various oscillators, collective excitations,
3. Quantum mechanic Approach
Bandgap modeling (k.p and tight binding) and matrix representation/computation
QM corrections to dispersion and (n, k) relation
Strain and Tensor transformation,
Strain and crystallographic dependence of Band-gap engineering and Hamiltonian
