Dual Carriers in Downlink Feature Parameter Description
2 Overview
Overview
2.1 Introduction
The dual carriers in downlink feature is an enhanced solution for downlink packet data rate, in
which two downlink carriers are supported and the downlink data rate is doubled, that is, the
downlink data rate of the enhanced general packet radio service (EGPRS) system is increased
from 473.6 kbit/s to 947.2 kbit/s. Therefore, the downlink rate for a single user is improved.
Dual Carriers in Downlink, however, requires more channel resources. Therefore, this feature
applies to downlink streaming services in cells that have sufficient packet channel resources.
With Dual Carriers in Downlink, an MS in a GSM network can be allocated a bandwidth wider
than 200 kHz on the Um interface. The number of timeslots received by the MS in a radio block
period increases. Therefore, the downlink rate for the MS is improved. If an MS does not support
Dual Carriers in Downlink and is allocated four downlink timeslots, as shown in Figure 2-1, in
accordance with MCS 9 (the highest code rate in the EGPRS), the rate of each timeslot is 59.2
kbit/s, and the maximum downlink rate for the MS is 236.8 (59.2 x 4) kbit/s. If an MS supports
Dual Carriers in Downlink, the MS can receive data of two carriers in a radio block period, as
shown in Figure 2-2. In accordance with MCS 9, the maximum downlink rate for the MS is
473.6 (59.2 x 8) kbit/s.

difference between the two algorithms is that a decision on whether the BSC allocates dual
carriers in the downlink to an MS is added to the preprocessing of the packet channel allocation
algorithm.
An MS enabled with Dual Carriers in Downlink transmits and receives data on two carriers
simultaneously. Because the radio link quality on the two carriers is different, the BSC separately
adjusts the coding scheme of the two carriers based on the report on radio link quality sent by
the MS.

Dual Carriers in Downlink Feature Parameter Description
3 Technical Description
When the downlink packet service load of a cell is greater than the value of
MSRDPDCHLEV(BSC6900,BSC6910), the downlink throughput of the packet service of
the cell cannot be improved even if the MS is enabled with Dual Carriers in Downlink.
Therefore, the BSC does not allocate dual carriers in the downlink to the MS. When the
coding scheme of the MS is lower than the value of MSRDMCSLEV
(BSC6900,BSC6910), the carrier-to-interference ratio (CIR) is low in the area where the
MS is located. In this case, the CIR can be greatly improved if MSRD is enabled. Therefore,
the BSC does not allocate dual carriers in the downlink to the MS.
l
A downlink TBF cannot be used for an MS enabled with Dual Carriers in Downlink during
initial establishment. It can be assigned to the MS in the Timeslot Reconfigure procedure only
when an uplink TBF has been established.
The BSC determines whether to allocate dual carriers in the downlink to an MS after the
preprocessing of the packet channel allocation algorithm as follows:
l
If dual carriers in the downlink need to be allocated to an MS, the BSC selects an appropriate
dual-carrier channel group. The detailed procedure is as follows: The BSC randomly selects
two carriers in a cell, performs bitwise logical OR operation on the bitmaps of available
channels on the two carriers, and then selects an appropriate dual-carrier channel group
based on the bitmap obtained from the bitwise logical OR operation and the multislot
capability of the MS. All the channel groups are given certain priorities. For details about
weights of the priorities, see GPRS/EGPRS Channel Management Feature Parameter
Description.
If dual carriers in the downlink do not need to be allocated to an MS, the subsequent PDCH
allocation algorithm is the same as the BTTI dynamic PDCH allocation algorithm. For
details about the BTTI dynamic PDCH allocation algorithm, see GPRS/EGPRS Channel
Management Feature Parameter Description.
RLC mode: The BSC allocates two downlink carriers in the same RLC mode to an MS
enabled with Dual Carriers in Downlink. The RLC mode is divided into RLC acknowledged
mode and RLC unacknowledged mode. When RLC acknowledged mode is used, the MS
sets the Relative Reserved Block Period (RRBP) field for the two carriers in turn, and then
separately reports the quality of the two carriers to the BSC.
Uplink data block scheduling: The BSC schedules uplink data blocks on only one of the
two downlink carriers allocated to an MS enabled with Dual Carriers in Downlink.
Link quality control: The BSC performs link quality control separately on the two downlink
carriers allocated to an MS enabled with Dual Carriers in Downlink. If the two carriers
have different Um quality, the data transmitted over the two carriers may use different
coding schemes.
Downlink PS power control: The BSC performs downlink PS power control separately on
the two downlink carriers allocated to an MS enabled with Dual Carriers in Downlink.
3.3 MSRD
The definition of Mobile Station Receive Diversity (MSRD) is as follows: An additional antenna
is configured on an MS to enhance the reception of a given link in the downlink. By means of

dual-antenna interference elimination, the channel diversity capability is enhanced. At the same
time, the 8 phase shift keying (8PSK) modulation signal obtains the same anti-interference
capability as the Gaussian minimum shift keying (GMSK) modulation signal. This improves the
user rate and system capacity. MSRD can effectively improve signal quality and enable the MS
to use a higher coding scheme.
l
In dense urban areas, such as a senior business district with a good coverage or an indoor
area with a poor coverage, MSRD can be used to improve the downlink signal receive
quality and a higher coding scheme is used. This way, the data throughput increases.
Because only the downlink signal receive capability of MSs is improved, the interference
level of the whole system does not increase.
In common urban areas, suburban areas, and country areas, MSRD can be used to improve
the CIR in areas far from the BTS, expand the coverage area of the network without the
need to add BTSs, and improve voice quality in the coverage area.
With MSRD, the BSC allocates channels to an MS when all the following conditions are met:
l
The channel allocation algorithm when MSRD is enabled is the same as the BTTI dynamic
PDCH allocation algorithm. For details, see GPRS/EGPRS Channel Management Feature
Parameter Description.
Dual Carriers in Downlink and MSRD are downlink features and both require that MSs can
receive two routes of signals. The Dual Carriers in Downlink feature requires an MS to perform
baseband processing on the two routes of signals. MSRD, a kind of interference elimination
technology, however, can combine two routes of signals into one before the baseband processing.
For an MS that has two antennas, Downlink Carriers in Downlink requires that the two antennas
receive signals on two different carriers. MSRD, however, requires that the two antennas receive
signals on the same carrier. Therefore, the MS cannot be enabled with Dual Carriers in Downlink
and MSRD simultaneously. MSRD is a feature on the MS side. An MS that supports MSRD
automatically uses MSRD if it does not use Downlink Carriers in Downlink. The BSC determines
whether the MS uses Downlink Carriers in Downlink or MSRD based on the network load and
the coding scheme of the MS.
When the downlink packet service load of the cell is greater than the value of MSRDPDCHLEV
(BSC6900,BSC6910), the downlink packet throughput of the cell cannot be improved even if
the MS is assigned with dual carriers in the downlink. Therefore, the BSC does not allocate dual
carriers in the downlink to the MS, and the MS automatically uses the MSRD feature.
When the coding scheme of the MS is lower than the value of MSRDMCSLEV
(BSC6900,BSC6910), the CIR is low in the area where the MS is located. In this case, the CIR
can be greatly improved if MSRD is enabled. Therefore, the BSC does not allocate dual carriers
in the downlink to the MS, and the MS automatically uses the MSRD feature.
