area to keep
people out of the

area.
b) Setting Out
The axis of each pile will be located by coordinate system using a
total station instrument by the licensed surveyor. Each CBP point
shall be set out and verified by the Engineer before piling works
commence. The pile positions will be marked by licensed surveyor
at the working area with a painted peg (steel pins) that will be

properly driven at referenced pile position based on approved

drawings for construction and design pile coordinates. The setting
out will be reviewed and verified by the Engineers Representative.
c) Boring Machine Set Up, Fixing & Leveling
Prior to commencement of piling works, boring rigs and its
associated machineries shall be inspected and make sure certificates
are in order.
The Kelly bar will be vertically positioned by means of a long base
level placed alternately in two mutually perpendicular positions.
d) Boring
Once verification of set-out pile position has been done and all
appropriate drilling tools has been checked; the set-up of boring
machine will follow, centering the excavation tool with the
theoretical pile center.
e) Installation of Temporary Casing
Having checked the compliance of casing, diameter, length (3.0 to
12.0 m long), cleanness and smoothness, the temporary casing
will be installed using a vibrator or the drilling rig.
For each pile position and before casing installation, two
temporary offset pegs will be fixed at known distance (1.5 2.0m)
from the pile position in two perpendicular directions.
A temporary casing will be installed by driving using a hammer
(vibrator) or by rotating and pressing down using the piling rig till
it rests on the top of self-supported layer. Should the temporary
casing meet any obstruction, boulder or high resistance at levels
significantly shallower than the expected stable soil level, drilling
under the casing tip will take place in parallel to the rotate-press
operation till it reaches the stable layer.
The temporary casing shall be installed in advance, in accordance

to the piling program of that day and will be extracted once the
piling concreting is completed.
During installing the casing, its position and verticality will be
checked every two meters deep, in accordance with specification.
Casing position will be checked by measuring the distance from
each offset peg to the edge of the casing. Verticality will be
checked in two perpendicular directions by using spirit level.
The verticality will be controlled by means of a long base level
alternatively positioned in two mutually perpendicular directions
on the casing or with two plumb lines located on perpendicular
axis.
The position of top of the casing will be checked by graphical
survey service after its installation and should be in accordance
with specified tolerances.
Maximum allowable deviation in position is 75mm.
Maximum allowable inclination is 1.5%.
If the exposed casing length is less than 1 meter above working
platform a wooden cover will be located on top of each casing in
order to prevent people falling into the bored hole. No worker will
be allowed to position near the hole.
f) Boring of Borehole
After the rig set up, drilling of the pile will commence. The
sequence is listed below:
1) Lowering of bucket attached to the Kelly bar into the casing
until soil is encountered.
2) Rotation and pull down applied to the bucket by the rotary table
through the Kelly bar, in order to load the excavation tool with
soil material and penetrate the soil itself.

CORPORATION (M) SDN BHD

SINOHYDRO

3) Withdrawal of loaded bucket from excavation shaft.

4) Dumping of material close to pile to be collected and dumped
later by Contractor shovel on-site to a location to be designated.
5) Drilling will proceed down to the design depth.
No pile shall be excavated closer than 3 pile diameters to an
existing bored pile unless concrete placement in the existing
pile has been completed for at least 24 hours. Excavated piles
shall not be left open overnight.
6) Final Check.
Depth of borehole shall be inspected by the Engineer similarly
the pile reinforcement shall be inspected on ground initially.
7) Soil Sampling.
During hole boring, soil samples shall be collected and recorded
the depth of sample found.
g) Bottom cleaning
On completion of boring, a cleaning bucket will be used in order to
remove drill cuttings from the bottom of the hole of the pile. In the
event of rock is encountered, a joint measurement with the
Engineers

Representative

will

be

conducted

and

recorded

accordingly.
After completion of bottom cleaning, check and verification of final
depth of borehole shall be conducted by the Engineer.
In the event of borehole continues to collapse, the temporary
casing will be driven deeper or the borehole will be backfilled.
h) Installation of Steel Cage
The level at the top of the poured pile will be at the bottom level
of the cap or slightly higher. Starter bar will be proposed to use
750mm into the capping beam.
Prior to installation the reinforcement cage, inspection and sign-off
shall be conducted by the Engineer.

CONTIGUOUS BORED PILE METHOD STATEMENT

CORPORATION (M) SDN BHD

SINOHYDRO

The installation of reinforcement will be performed by using a 50T

crawler crane or equivalent in the presence of banks man and with
tag lines to control the lifting operations.
The cage will be hanged connecting the ropes of the crane to
different levels, in order to reduce the bending stresses and
deformation during lifting.
Adjustment to the currently proposed method will be implemented
at the beginning and during the works, giving the utmost care to
the cage integrity as per specification.
Once the cage is in vertical position the service crane suspending
the cage from the top, will move to the open hole in order to carry
out the installation and no worker will be allowed to position near
the hole. They will come only near to the pile to insert the stopper
beam when the portion of the reinforcement cage is inserted to
the borehole.
The reinforcing steel cage will be slowly and carefully lowered into
the hole, in order to avoid damages to spacers. In order to enable
the joining of hanging cage element, the top of the main element
is left to extend out of the casing and hanged to it by crossing
either two diametrical spanning metal elements through the
reinforced section or utilizing four steel suspension hooks hanged
to the casing extremity.
The top additional cage element is hanged, lifted and presented to
the main suspended cage. The connection (to be tied using Uclips) between the reinforcement bars will be done by the
subcontractor with the help of the site supervisors. The joints of
rebar will be checked on site by the site supervisors.

CONTIGUOUS BORED PILE METHOD STATEMENT

CORPORATION (M) SDN BHD

SINOHYDRO

When the additional cage is firmly linked with the main one, the
service crane will raise the total element in order to remove the
stopper beams and lower the cages into the pile excavated shaft.
The total length of reinforcement will be lowered to the design
level. The cage shall be suspended from the top by ropes to the
casing to adjust the steel top level based on design level.
The lifting operations will be performed in a manner that cage will
not be distorted. No special lifting points are provided into the
cage since this would involve some welding which is strictly
prohibited. There will be an internal ring (section of ring & 25 mm)
crossed tied to the main rebar near the top of every section of
cage. The cage will be lifted through hooks hooked to the ring
itself. All the parts involved in the lifting activities will be
dimensioned in accordance with the maximum cage weight.
Reinforcement cages will be stored in dry area and shifted nearby
piles just before installation. Cages will be stockpiled off the
ground on wooden timbers and covered by a plastic sheet tied in
such a way to resist to the wind/water and to avoid contamination
by soil and to minimize corrosion.
i) Installation of Tremie Pipe
The casting platform will be placed in position at the top of casing
to place concrete. Generally the tremie pipe elements will be
lowered at the centre of pile shaft for its full length.
The number of tremie pipe sections will be determined by the
depth of the pile to be concreted. Tremie should be kept embedded
in concrete by 3.0m minimum. Tremie will be clean and water tight
throughout.
At the end of each concrete pile, the tremie shall be cleaned for the

next day usage in site laydown area.

j) Concreting of Borehole
Tremie concrete will be supplied in ready mix trucks. Before being
poured, the supplied concrete will be subject to workability check,
verifying

that

actual

characteristics

suit

the

Technical

Specifications.
If the excavation is left open for more than 12 hours before starting
the concrete placement, the borehole will be re-cleaned and the
Engineer must be notified also and given the opportunity to inspect
and attend the re-cleaning.
Concrete will be continuously placed throughout the whole
placement process to ensure a smooth operation. The tremie pipe
will be slowly and smoothly lift up using the service crane keeping
its bottom embedded 3.0m minimum into fresh concrete.
The tremie pipe will have a minimum diameter of 250mm and shall
be clean and watertight.
To shorten the tremie pipes they will be lifted from the pile shaft by
the service crane and stopped on the casting platform by special
forks which insert below the coupling enlargements of the pipes;
the extra elements will be removed and the topping element
replaced on the shortened column in order to continue the pouring.
In order to achieve a complete homogeneous casting height,
concrete will be over poured at the working platform level.
There is no need to vibrate the top 1.5 m of concrete for following
reasons:
1) The casing is removed always & only through vibro extractor
which ensures all the needed vibration.
2) After casing extraction no additional concrete is added to

CONTIGUOUS BORED PILE METHOD STATEMENT

CORPORATION (M) SDN BHD

SINOHYDRO

the pile so there is no need to extra vibro-action

3) When the pile is chipped off a high of 1-2 diameters of
concrete is removed from the top part of the pile so it is
useless to vibrate such portion.
After at least 24 hours of pouring the last pile in a group,
excavation

can

commence

down

to

formation

level

for

construction of capping beam.

The site supervisor will check the level of the formation and that it
complies with the specifications.
Shovel will remove all the over poured concrete and concrete
wash-out and collect it in an appropriate area for further offsite
disposal.
The minimum height of concrete that will be cast above the cutoff-level is 1 pile diameter.
k) Extraction of Casing
On completion of casting operations the temporary casing will be
removed by means of vibrator. This operation will be performed
while the concrete within the casing remains sufficiently workable.
Extra care will be done during extraction of temporary casing; the
supervisor must check the falling of concrete to make sure that
the pile is not under cast/below cut off level after temporary
casing extraction.
In case of falling or loss of concrete we will replace or re-fill the
borehole up to 500mm above cut-off level.
The casing will be installed in a previously determined pile
location, to be bored in the same way.

To prevent the cage from sinking into the concrete while the
casing is extracted a rope connecting the top of cage to the crane
will

hold

the

reinforcement

while

the

casing

is

extracted

preventing the cage from sinking into the concrete.

As per specification, the vertical reinforcing alignment shall be
150mm. This tolerated length will be considered per cage length &
steel top level to ensure the specific anchorage length.
Site engineer or supervisor will ensure that crane lifting plan and
associated rigging is calculated to take the weight of the cage,
casing and any drag on both the cage and casing from the
concrete as it slumps down as the casing extracted.

piles are having full length reinforcement cage. The reinforcement
length shall be determined with respect to pile toe and cut-off level
plus the specified projected length.
To confirm the level of the cages, the following precautions/
installation steps are to be followed:
1) Difference between the top of the cage and the installed casing
is calculated.
2)

While lowering the reinforcement cage into the borehole, a

binding wire will be tied on top of the reinforcement.

3) The exact measurement calculated with respect to the casing

top will be marked on the binding wire and will be tagged.
4) The reinforcement will be lowered to the final position.
5) The tagging on the binding wire should be exactly in level with
the casing top level.

7.0 Defective Piles

During construction of contiguous bored pile, defective piles such
as fracturing and necking may occur. The reasons for such
defective piles may include: fast extraction of casing; high water
table; pile shaft collapsing; fast lifting up of tremie pipe etc. All the
defective piles shall be repaired or replaced by construction of
additional piles. Following measure shall be taken to repair
fracturing or necking piles: drilling a min.150mm grout hole
through the pile until 300mm below the defective section, high
pressure water and/or air shall be applied to thoroughly clean up
the defective section; subsequently pressured grouting with the
w/c ratio 0.4:1 shall be carried out to fully backfill the void to
ensure no any fissure open. High pressured grouting or
construction of additional piles can be conducted to rectify
necking piles.
