The Discussion :

Chairperson lead the discussion by proposed the meeting


agenda which is the meaning of the succession planning , the
important of the succession planning, the advantage and the Lau Mei Kei
disadvantage of succession planning ,and the process of the
succession planning conduct by Mattel .

Give the information about Mattel which an organization that


produce toys such as Barbies , Hot Wheels and match box Natasya
cars, American girls dolls and books also be licensed by
Sesame Street, Barneys and Friends to produce their toys .

Giving other idea about Mattel which is in Mattel there is 31


000 workers who works in the company in 150 countries, at Cheah Sheen bee
the same time the Mattel have been award the world most
ethical company in 2004 .

Stated extra information about Mattel which is in 2000 Jill Natasya


Barad was replace by Robert Eckert the one who try the
succession strategy to retain the original talent .

After the CEO take over the position , the succession planning Yip Choi Ling

Suggested that the easy way to understand the succession

Giving example , which is seeing the potential employee to


become a leader or one of the manager , so sending the Natasya
employee to training to develop their skill , so that the
employee will enable to become a manager in five or ten
year .

process to recognize , develop and retain top leadership
talent in the company .

Saying that they want to ensure the leadership continuity


within the organization and encourage their employees growth Teoh Ching Teng

Asking why is the succession planning is important

Stated that succession planning is important because we Rosmiyati


cannot predict the disaster . If there is the disaster , through
succession planning , the empty position will be fill
immediately .

Give opinion which is ,since Mattel is the manufacturing


company , if someone suddenly quit the job or one of the Yip Choi Ling
supervisor retired , then they must have the person to take
over the position effectively . So , the manufacturing process
will not be extend .

Saying that ,in short the company need to do the succession


planning for the qualified employee to fill the position . In Lau Mei Kei
case in emergency , we will know the qualified employee to fill
the empty position .

Give explanation , which is in the current trends right now , Dr . Faizal


talent pool is very small and there is various company would
like to attract talent people . Asking the technique used.

Saying that the promotion are for the internal workers only .

Give the opinion about the other technique used which is


training , rotational program and mentoring .

Asking about the opinion from the other member about the Lau Wei Kei
retirement issue will effect succession planning .

Saying that what she read about Mattel is the company will
know who is going to retired , so before the person is retired
they will prepare the succession planning to prepare the Cheah sheen bee
person who can fill the position . The company will provide the
training and so on . the company will retain the home growth
talent . Normally the position will fill by the internal staff only .

Stated that during the succession planning , the company will


choose the person who qualified based on their training , skill Lau Wei Kei
and qualification .
Asking if the training and development is important for the
qualified person .

Agree that training and development is important because the Natasya


purpose of succession planning is to have the legacy of the
top management .so must provide training to the potential

staff to polish the skill and the knowledge.

Asking if the training and development is the suitable Lau Wei Kei
approach to find the qualified person .

Stated that it is suitable to use training and development Natasya


technique because can save the cost from recruiting from the
external .

Giving opinion to use the retention strategy that can save the
training development cost and the recruitment cost because Sam Wei Li
we just need to give the top manager extra bonus or retention
bonus to retain the talent manager .

Saying that through training and development we can Teoh Ching Teng
evaluate the person . After training the person have learn the
skill so he or she should be evaluate to asses whether he or
she suitable or not .

Stated that the retention technique is also important because Natasya


we do not want the person that we give training go to other
organization .

Give the opinion that development can include the retention Teoh Ching Teng
program to retain them .

Give the idea to provide training to the middle level and Lau Wei Kei
determine who qualified to fill the top level position .

We discover the potential employee that can be the top leader Natasya
and choose where to start the training program either from
lower level or form the middle level .

Asking the member opinion is it the succession planning Lau Wei Kei
conducted from the low level to top level or middle level to top
level .

Saying that the current trend the organization providing the Yip Choi Ling
graduate training program for fresh graduate . Fresh graduate
can be refer to low management level . They provide the
training to let them go up to the higher position .

Giving opinion that it depends on the company financial . If Tan Meng Zhen
company cannot provide enough financial , they will ignore
the lower level . focus on critical position such as finance .

Thinking that Mattel is the big company and have enough


financial to provide the succession planning for the lower Lau Mei Kei
level . Asking about the benefit of training and development .

Saying that training and development can increase the Masmida


employees ability that will improve their performances .
Give opinion that the benefit of training and development is to Amira
retain employee because they will feel appreciated and can
add the skill to let them move to higher position .

Giving example , nice position will offer by the company and


the employee will put the effort to be promoted . If there is no Lau Wei Kei
succession planning , they will not know the direction to go
and what empty position are offered . Motivate the employee
to work hard and better to fill the position.

Stated that succession planning can helping individual to Nurul Shazana


realize their career plan and give aspiration to them .

Saying that the important of succession planning is when the


company implement the succession planning will bring the Sam Wei Li
good reputation . Because the company will provide the
opportunity to employee to promote , advancement and
improvement .

Conclude all the idea of the discussion about the succession Lau Wei Kei
planning .

Giving extra idea which is , can immediately identified the Szeto vinnie
suitable candidate to fill up the empty position through the
succession planning .

employee because succession planning involve many
paperwork that need to identified one by one . it also take time
and administrative work is a lot .

Thinking that the immediate superior can appoint the talented Teoh Ching Teng
people from the department to the human resource and only
evaluate the appointed people . so the burden will decreased.

Immediate superior can recommend the candidate to the Lau Wei Kei
human resource department to be focus on .

Stated that the challenge of succession planning is there is no Szeto Vinnie


new idea due to internal recruitment because there no change
in the company .

Asking how to overcome the challenge

Giving idea to Invite specialist to conduct or take part in Lau Wei Kei
training and development program to give a lot of new idea
and experience .

The conclusion:
The members agree that succession planning
- Save recruitment cost because there is no need to call
for interview and do more administrative thing.
- Retain strategy : employee may put effort to be on
higher position and retain in the company .
- Provide training from lower level to higher level , it
efficient because they can step by step evaluate who
qualified to fill the job .
- Increase current employee ability : training make the
employee learn a lot .
- Clear career path : the right direction.
- Bring good reputation
