Culture or Cultural Theme: Creating a culture of kindness, bullying, judging, acceptance
Objective: Students will be able to determine the theme or key ideas of the story.
Materials: The book Each Kindness by Jacqueline Woodson, blank pieces of paper,
construction paper, pencils, crayons, scissors, tape
Procedure Day 1:
Introduce the book and the author.
Read the book out loud to the class.
o Ask the students to share their first thoughts about the book.
Read the book out loud one more time.
o Initiate more in depth discussion with the students, and ask the following
questions:
What was the story about?
Describe Chloe.
Describe Maya.
Why did Chloe and her friends not want to play with Maya?
How do you think Maya felt?
Procedure Day 2:
For introduction, students will share with the class their acts of kindness from previous
day.
After sharing, students will be introduced to the class project.
o Students will create a tree of kindness.
o Students will be instructed to pick a construction paper of their favorite color.
o Then, students will trace their hand on the construction paper, write their act of
kindness on the hand, and cut it out.
o After everyone is finished with their hand, everyone will tape their hand to the
tree bark on the class wall.
