A glimpse of our
past (1910 to 2010)
Many of our gracious buildings in this quaint
old city are distinguished by their great age and
historical significance, as well as their architec-
tural interest.
The land for this handsome post office was
purchased in 1907, and in 1909 ground was
broke, in 1910 the steel (interior) was being
built. Surrounding the interior was beautiful
brick and later hid behind the (exterior) stucco
finish. This mult-purpose building was finished
in 1912 and used as a Federal Courthouse, Cus-
toms House and U.S. Post office.
In 1910 this post office building was the
(first)steel structure to be built in our city and
considered the finest most durable and safest
shelter to be in during hurricane force winds.
Some residents today feel the structure is a
valuable building and cherished historic land-
mark, worthy of our up keep At this date, in
2010, the future (use) of this charming historic
building is being discussed.
