Annotated Bibliography: Discrimination against Women
Research Question: How has discrimination against minority women affected the work
environment?
Ehrenreich, Barbara. Nickel and Dimed. Metropolitan Books. 2001.
Summary: In Nickel and Dimed, Barbara faces some challenges in the workforce. She
experiences gender discrimination from her boss and co-workers when she worked at Wal- Mart.
Unfortunately, because she was a women, she faced sexual harassment and lower wages. She has
also seen women use their sexuality to be treated equally and at the very least, decent, by their
male employers. One of the rules she had to abide by was not to raise her voice or cuss no matter
what while at work. At one point in her job, she was given an easy task to put away a bikini top
back in the swimwear section, because she was a lady which infuriated Barbara. Throughout
her experience, Ehrenreich came to realize that men have the higher power and are more favored
over women.
Evaluation: Nickel and Dimed is a reliable source to use because it talks about real-life
experiences that people face in the world today and it is based on a true story. Ehrenreich faces
discrimination in her job, which some people still do. The author focuses on the journey and her
experience in the low-wage world. Her tone in the book is very straightforward. She clearly

states what she observes, hears, and does. This source is biased, because she does have many
opinionated things to say throughout the story. This source was useful to our group because it
helped prove that discrimination is still around, and Barbara had seen it first-hand. It also helped
us answer our research question by giving factual information and showing that women do not
have it as easy as men do. This book opened my mind about the difficulties women deal with in
some workplaces when they should not have to.
Gender Discrimination. Global Issues in Context. 2006. Web. 22 September 2016.
Summary: The article discusses the aspects of gender discrimination, and about how
stereotypically women are seen more different than men. It indicates feminine traits are less
desirable and are identified as weak. Usually women and not men are the victims of
discrimination. Throughout historical societies, women and men are assigned different roles to
determine the difference between the two. The main argument in this source is that over decades,
society has been built on the presumption that all individuals are equal, when in fact they are not.
The article wants to inform people of the unequal treatment male and females are experiencing
and urge to work towards a change.
Evaluation: The article is a reliable source because it comes from the student district databases
and states legitimate facts about the history of discrimination. Since it is written by Global
Issues, and was issued in the news, the topic is a subject that concerns everyone worldwide. The
tone of the author is very factual. It states the aspects of discrimination and its history. This
source is unbiased because the publisher does not share its opinion or feeling concerning the
topic. This source was useful to the group because it helped compare information with other
sources and with Ehrenreichs experience. The article gave many facts as to how women are
affected by discrimination in general, which made it easy to answer the research question.

Reading this article made me further understand why women in certain areas are discriminated
against. When skimming through the paper, the group realized that the article was published in
2006. It made me question whether this source should be used in the project.
The New York Times. The Pay Gap for Women. Global Issues in Context. 30 July 2016. Web.
22 September 2016.
Summary: The article mainly addresses the pay gaps for women in the workforce. Studies have
continued to show that women are earning less money than their male co-workers and advance
more slowly than men do. Over 120 experiments in 2015 have been conducted on hiring,
promotions, and compensation preferences. All have proved to show that men are favored over
women even with having the same qualifications. The main argument in the source is that gender
discrimination is alive today and needs to stop. The authors purpose is to persuade employers
and people to put a stop to discrimination against women.
Evaluation: This article is a reliable source to use because it has been published recently in 2016
and it was issued by Global Issues. The author seems to have a strong stance and opinion about
how women are treated in the workforce. The article was published a couple months ago,
indicating that gender discrimination is a recent global issue. The tone of the source comes as
concerning, because the author feels affected by the issue and pushes people to change. The
article is biased, because the author shares its opinion on the matter. This source was useful to
our group because it helped write down current information on the subject of discrimination.
Having this article determined the answer to the research question, being that men are favored
over women in the workplace. When reading the article, it made me mad knowing that women
are looked down upon and seen as not fit to be a leader or a scientist as men are. The source is

short and has little information, which made the group question if another source should be used
instead.
