This lesson observation provides feedback on a science lesson taught by Devashi Nemdharry at Baldivis Secondary School. The observer notes that the lesson was well organized and showed genuine care for student learning. Some areas for improvement include filling the transitions between stages of the lesson, taking more control at the front of the room from the start, and working on engaging pedagogical practices like effective questioning and allowing student input. The observer provides additional suggestions to enhance student engagement, such as making objectives clear, using positive discipline, incorporating relevant and challenging activities, and changing up the classroom setup periodically.

Devashi Nemdharry Baldivis S.S. Yr 7 Science: A well organised lesson that demonstrated genuine concern for, and interest in student learning. It was good to see you focus on the transitional stages of a lesson. There is a need to fill out the micro spaces between each transitional stage; watch your timing There is a need for you to begin quickly taking charge from the front of the room. Try to avoid giving instructions as you go. You may be battling with a culture here but this is your classroom so take ownership. The students responded well to your requests for quiet and attention. This should give you confidence in taking risks to try out and investigate engaging pedagogical practices. Have a go at planning effective QnA sessions, allow the students to share their ideas and bring their own questions into the arena. Endeavour to learn student names and involve more of them in feed back and sharing. I appreciate you are pursuing the school AVID procedures and expectations And this can be both challenging and limiting at times. Dont be afraid to teach the way your heart tells you. AVID is a tool for learning but its not the only tool. I hope this is helpful. I enjoyed our lesson analysis and conversation, be encouraged!! To enhance student engagement in learning give consideration to: - Make your teaching objectives clear; students need to know the journey toward the end of the lesson allow enough time to review the journey!( Remember our conversation on this) - a positive assertive discipline model for your class. Take charge as a manager of people, state/establish your expectations of behaviour and student involvement in your lessons. Bring your students together for group discussion and sharing of ideas. You have a right to teach, students have a right to learn. Deal with the students who prevent this name on board 3 times constitutes a phone call home, points for doing well, points to redeem behaviour. Have sanctions you will follow up eg phone home. - Engaging pedagogy- What are the qualities of engaging pedagogy? Relevance of learning topic, ownership of learning, challenging activities, relational classrooms, knowledgeable and relational teacher. Give students something challenging and productive to do, something they can achieve at. Give ownership to the room; display student work, make posters, plan videos, drama, role play; incorporate democracy for all in your teaching style.
- socially critical issues can be considered eg extinction of species in WA.
-The room: Change the classroom around, one week with desks in a u-shape, next week in nested table groups. You decide who sites where. Arrange students into research groups to investigate and research the topic- students nominate chairperson, secretary, reporter. Establish discussion/research groups that seek and share their findings. I believe you are skilled to do this please be encouraged!!
