Presentation of an ICT application for use in a lesson

Tayla Shannon

How you are planning on using the ICT application

One of the ICT applications we will be using in our unit plan is Kahoot. In lesson 1 and 2 of
our unit we briefly cover How do we learn in terms of operant conditioning, trial and error,
classical conditioning and observational learning. The program Kahoot will be used as a
type of formative assessment to see how much information students have retained.
Kahoot is a website that can be used for class discussion, quizs or as a survey. In this
instance we will be using it as a quiz, where students will log in individually and answer
questions about content covered in the last 2 classes to see where they are at.
On Kahoot you can either make your own quiz or you can use a ready made quiz on the
website, I prefer to make my own as you can tailor the questions exactly to what you have
covered in class.
At the end of the quiz you can download the results of all students, which shows you the
questions they answered correctly and incorrectly. This is valuable information that you
can use to alter your classes in a way that delivers the information in a more effective way.
Also you can repeat the same quiz at a later date and see if students have improved. It is
a fantastic tool for both student and teacher. For students it is interactive and exciting as it
is set out similar to a game show. For teachers it gives valuable feedback on all students
progress. I like to have a small prize such as lollies of the winner at the end. It also gives
feedback to the student telling them how many questions they got correct and incorrect.
Connection of the activity to Victorian Curriculum domains
Psychology and Physical education VCAA study designs both state:
In designing courses for this study teachers should incorporate information and
communications technology (ICT) where appropriate and applicable to the teaching and
learning activities.
In psychology specifically:
Students should apply their scientific understanding to familiar and to unfamiliar
situations, including personal, social, environmental and technological contexts.
Physical education specifically:
When planning learning activities, ICT should be used as a tool for learning. The use of
appropriate technology rather than specific hardware, software and other applications is
stated to ensure that schools make use of the resources available to them and are not
disadvantaged by limited access to various ICT tools.
VCAA learning domains covered our unit:
VCE Psychology Unit 4
Psychological concepts specific to the investigation and their significance, including
definitions of key terms, and psychological representations
Typical characteristics of a mentally healthy person, including high levels of functioning,
social and emotional well-being and resilience to life stressors
Characteristics of scientific research methodologies and techniques of primary
qualitative and quantitative data collection relevant to the selected investigation:

experiments, self-reports, questionnaires, interviews and/ or use of rating scales;

reliability and validity of data; and minimisation of experimental bias and confounding
and extraneous variables
Applications, and comparisons, of learning theories:
classical conditioning as informed by Ivan Pavlov: roles of neutral, unconditioned,
conditioned stimuli; unconditioned and conditioned responses
applications of classical conditioning: graduated exposure, aversion therapy, flooding
trial-and-error learning
three-phase model of operant conditioning as informed by B.F. Skinner: positive and
negative reinforcement, response cost, punishment and schedules of reinforcement
Methods of organising, analysing and evaluating primary data to identify patterns and
relationships including sources of error and limitations of data and methodologies
Key findings of the selected investigation and their relationship to psychological concepts
and theories associated with neural function, consciousness, learning, memory and/or
mental wellbeing
VCE Physical Education Unit 4
Plan, implement and evaluate training programs to enhance specific fitness components
Analyse and evaluate strategies designed to enhance performance or promote recovery
Explanation of how the technology enhances student learning
Kahoot enhances student learning by engaging the students, it is a form of entertainment
and education in one. Technology is a huge part of the 21st century and not exploiting this
in your classroom would be putting yourself and the students at a disadvantage. Students
love to use their smart phones in class, sometimes not for the right reasons. However
having the ability to incorporate such a useful tool in a productive way in the classroom is
fantastic.
Kahoot has the ability to save data and results of students progress, therefore it is also a
great tool for the teacher to see where students are excelling and also lacking in order to
be able to address these areas of the content.
When you announce to a class that there will be a test the next class, for some it is very
daunting. Kahoot takes the stress away from taking a quiz and makes it more interactive
and exciting. In between questions there is room for discussion, as the teacher is in control
of moving onto the next question.

Creating a Kahoot quiz

- Keep in mind you can also create a discussion or survey.
Click create quiz
You will be asked to:
- Make a title of the quiz
- Description
- Language
- Audience
- Add an optional cover picture to the quiz
- You also have the option to make the quiz private or public so others can use it
You can now start creating questions by clicking Add question
Type in your question
Add your answer options - You don't have to fill in all 4.
Click the tick next to the answer(s) that is correct
Click next when finished
Repeat this sequence for all questions
When complete click save
You can preview, edit, play or share the quiz right away
Share will give you the URL to the quiz, however this option is only if you selected public
If you press play you can copy the URL into a powerpoint if you are on private so its a
quick link to get started in class, or you can sign straight into your account to get started
in class.
