Dear Parishioners,
Remembrance
Once again, I am conscious that November heralds a more reflective time in the
Churchs year. As part of our liturgies I draw your attention to the All Saints
service on the 6th November in which we have an opportunity to remember
those parishioners and loved ones who have passed away. As we remember
them may we give thanks for their faith, love and example.
Student Reader
We welcome Sean Hanily to Holy Trinity who joins us from the Theological
Institute.
Christmas Sale
The annual sale will be held on Saturday 26th November. I look forward to
seeing you in the Carry Centre as we welcome a very special guest.
Special Needs:
As with previous years I am asking for your support of our Special Needs Fund.
This fund will be used to give a helping hand to those in financial difficulties
within our parish and community. If you are fortunate enough to be in a position
to help supplement this fund please send your donation to me marked Special
Needs (or if you wish for the parish to receive a tax refund on the donation,
please make your donation through the Hon. Treasurer, Mr Chris Hurley).

Missions and Charities

In November we make our annual donationsas we pray for their on-going
work, we pray and give thanks for all those who support these agencies.
Revision of Vestrypersons
The Register of Vestrypersons is open for revision until the 16th January 2017. If
you are over 18 and subscribe to parish funds and are not yet registered, please
see one of the Churchwardens and fill in the registration form. This will enable
you to vote at the meeting of the General Vestry.
Parking opposite Church
Car users are kindly reminded to note that the parking spaces directly opposite
the church should be offered to those with limited mobility (alternative parking is
available in the Carry Centre and on Killiney Hill Rd).
HSE Grant
The Select Vestry are delighted to inform you that the HSE have awarded the
Carry Centre a grant of 5,000 towards the installation of IT equipment. More
details to follow.

A working group has been established to look at three possible areas of growth
and development over the next 3 years. More to follow

Youth & Children

Primary Schools Service

About 600 primary and junior school pupils from all over Dublin and
Glendalough filled Christ Church Cathedral on October 14th for the annual
diocesan schools service. The service, which was full of joy, great singing and
some drumming, had has its theme Living History, Living God. Archbishop
Michael Jackson presided in the presence of Dean Dermot Dunne. The service
was led by the Revd Eugene Griffin, who with a subcommittee of the Diocesan
Board of Education, organised the morning. Pupils from G.K.N.S. attended and
took part in the service.

Applications for Junior Infants 2017 will be available for collection in person from
the school office from Monday 7th November - Friday 18th November 2016
between 8.30 a.m. and 2.30 p.m. The closing date for receipt of completed
Application forms is Monday 21st November 2016 by 2.15p.m.

The Y Club (Killiney Mens Society)

In September the men had a tour of the Aviva stadium (pictured). The next
meeting will be on Thursday 24th November in the Carry Centre, this will be
followed on December 15th with dinner in the Queens, Dalkey.

Bible Study and Prayer Group
This year we will be looking at figures in the Bible. The next meetings will be
held on Tuesday 22nd November and Tuesday 6th December at 10.30am in the
Carry Centre. All are very welcome to attend. Further expressions of interest
may be addressed to the Rector.
Table Tennis
The table tennis meets every Monday at 8pm in the Carry Centre. If you are
interested in trying out table tennis, you would be very welcome (and we will
even lend you a bat!). For more information contact Linda Franck (086

The Killiney Winey Dineys
The next gathering will be on November 3rd, to Phelim Byrne, Dun Laoghaire.
Further expressions of interest or queries may be addressed to Zandra Laing or

Ladies Guild
The next meeting on Tuesday 8th November will be held in the Carry Centre
at 2.30pm. The date for the annual Christmas lunch is to be confirmed. All
welcome.

Diocesan Synod - David Millar writes...

The October meeting of the Dublin & Glendalough joint Synods was held in the
spacious hall of the recently-opened Temple Carrig Secondary School,
Greystones a building offering strength and protection, the Archbishop
emphasised, which was designed to enable the pupils to BE to be themselves to
the full in order to serve their community and the wider world. Buildings need
to be made to increasingly better use as the world changes, to demonstrate that
Christianity is not something separate from the rest of everyday life.
He spoke of the Council for Missions work combating the downward spiral of
the conditions of human living. Lone children sent by their parents away from
them in boats as refugees in the hope of a better life. People on the move utterly
and in their last expression of hope for their sheer survival. Pictures of which we
can view in comfort in front of our televisions any day.
Various speakers highlighted local issues the implementations of the demands
of the Charities Act, the unsatisfactory status of unfilled parishes, and
particularly, from the Ministry for Healing, the need for people to lower their
defences, and to help people encounter life and living in the multi-faceted action
of healing. The Archdeacon of Dublin, asking us to remember that it was one
year to the day since the murder of Garda Golden, stressed the debt which we
owe to the Garda Siochana.
We also heard from two visitors, the Bishop of Spain and the Bishop of Lusitania
(Portugal), who spoke of the lively history of the episcopal reformed church with
which the Church of Ireland has long had a unique connection.
Several speakers spoke of the plight of the refugee and the disasters of
earthquake, famine and hurricane throughout the world, in the light of which
should the Church of Ireland wish to celebrate its 150 years of Disestablishment
by the establishment of a centre albeit for important Christian purposes in
buildings other than those which already exist seems to deserve much thought,
particularly in the light of the Archbishops address

Annual Christmas Sale

Christmas in Holy Trinity
Last year, as part of its Christian witness Holy Trinity parish and its parishioners
donated over 22,000 to local, national and international charitable purposes.
Like last Christmas, this year Holy Trinity will support the work of Bishops
Appeal, TRUST and children in need. This is done through gifts of money,
clothing and gifts. Thank you to all those who generously give!
Parish Retreat: It is hoped to have a Parish Retreat in Holy Trinity, Killiney
on Saturday 5th November. Running this event will require a minimum of 10
people. A sign-up sheet will be available at the church door.
The Church Review
Subscriptions for 2017 are now due, if you are interested in
continuing or beginning a subscription in 2017 (40 for 11 copies)
please contact Marianne Irvine (2858136) before 20th January 2017.

Charity Christmas Cards

Following the service on the 13th November, there will be Tea
and Coffee in The Carry Centre. During this time, Charity
Christmas Cards, Calendars, Diaries and Gifts will be available
for sale. Charities due to be represented are the R.N.L.I.,
Guide Dogs for the Blind, the Blackrock Hospice, The Laura
Lynn Foundation, Holy Trinity and hopefully others!

Scripture (Bible) Cake

Scripture Cake was traditionally made and eaten at Christmas, Easter and Weddings. It was
popular in Britain in the nineteenth century, and was often used as a way to teach girls in Sunday
School both baking and Bible verses.
INGREDIENTS:
1) 200g Judges v:25 last clause

7) 100g Numbers xvii:8

2) 250g Jeremiah vi:20

8) 500g I Kings iv:22

3) 3 tbsp I Samuel xiv:25

9) 1 tsp II Chronicles ix:9

4) 4 of Jeremiah xvii:11

10) 1 tsp Leviticus ii:13

5) 170g I Samuel xxx:12 second food

11) 2 tsp Amos iv:5

6) 170g Nahum iii:12

12) 5 tbsp Judges iv:19 last clause

RECIPE METHOD: Grease a cake tin lightly with butter and line it with some baking
parchment. The baking parchment will help stop the top of the cake burning or drying out
too much, allowing the cake to be baked for a longer time at a lower temperature. Chop
up Nahum iii (ingredient 6) fine. Blanch and chop up ingredient 7 fine if they have not been
already bought like this. In one large mixing bowl cream together ingredients 1, 2 & 3 add
ingredient 4 one at a time still beating. Add into this bowl, ingredients 5, 6 and only half of
ingredient 7 next and beat again until everything is fully mixed. In another, larger mixing
bowl, sift together ingredients 8, 9, 10 & 11. Make a well in the centre of the ingredients.
Add the first mixing bowl ingredients into the well in the centre of the second mixing bowl,
(wet ingredients into the dry ingredients). Stir until a cake batter starts to form. Lastly add
enough of ingredient 12 in to the cake batter so that it becomes easy to mix and is of a
dropping consistency, i.e. the mixture will easily drop off the mixing spoon. You might need
some extra Judges iv if the mixture is a little dry. Stir to thoroughly combine the cake
mixture and then pour it into the prepared cake tin. After pouring the cake batter into the
cake tin sprinkle over the top the remaining half of ingredient 7 and gently press them part
way into the batter. Bake the Scripture Cake at 160C for 90 minutes or until done, test by
pushing a skewer into the centre of the cake and see if it comes out clean. A Scripture Cake
can last for several days in an air tight tin and

flavour if baked on one day and eaten on the next.

Share the Load, Lighten the Darkness, Feel the Heat Parishioners Campaign
to Support Christian Aid
Utilising freely available twigs and wine boxes with a Christian Aid label attached, David
Millar, is hoping to spread the word about the important work of Christian Aid and also
raise money. The initiative was launched on Sunday 25th September but David hopes his
idea can spread far and wide as a way of sharing the load with those who struggle.
Inspired by Lokos story, which was highlighted in a Christian Aid campaign two years ago,
David has come up with a way to connect our lives with the lives of people who struggle to
make a living. Loko walked for miles every day, facing much danger collecting firewood to
sell so she could feed her family.
In the winter many people here buy kindling which is freely available in peoples gardens or in
the hedgerows nearby. David suggests gathering the kindling and putting it in wine cartons
(six to 12 bottle boxes are best, he says, and wine merchants are delighted to get rid of
them) with a specially designed label affixed. The boxes of kindling are not for sale but a
donation to Christian Aid is encouraged and the label raises awareness of the charity. This
project is something that every parish could do for Christian Aid without incurring cost and
it could also be adopted by youth groups and eco groups, he says.
Peter Byrne of Christian Aid said that since the Christian Aid campaign, Loko has become
part of a project and has received one cow and two goats which have transformed her life.
She no longer has to walk for eight hours a day to collect fire wood. The project has given
her life and hope, he says.
Harvest: Many thanks to our Choir, Music Director Frank Hughes, the Parish choir, the
G.K.N.S. choir, and the Flower Guild who decorated our Church with artistic flair and all
who enhanced our worship during this autumn season. Our preachers were warmly
received and we thank them for their inspiring reflections!

Gods Cabbage by Nell Taylor

Youth and age, they walked the path beside the garden wall
To choose a very special gift for Harvest Festival.
Till Peter stopped, in sheer delight and pointed to a place,
Oh, can I take that cabbage, its got such a happy face.
Grandad took a knife and cut the cabbage from its line,
He shook the soil from underneath, and tied its leaves with twin,
And handed it to Peter saying, There, now. That should do
Your Gran and I will take those pears; this gift is just from you.
In church Miss Bains was working near the window by herself
Please, may I put Gods cabbage with your flower on the shelf?
For thirty years Ive dressed this ledge and never had to share
And it will spoil my dahlias child, you take it over there.
Mrs Black was piling rosy apples on the sill,
Around a jar of honey with a pretty paper frill,
But when he stretched his arms up high to put his gift in place
She said Dont put the cabbage there, it takes up all the space.
The small boy turned away from her, and wandered down the aisle,
And a tear fell on the cabbage, and splashed its happy smile.
Outside he met the vicar who said Hey now. Why the gloom?
Please, I brought God a present, and there isnt any room.
The vicar took him by the hand and wiped his tears away
Theres lots of room inside the church for such a gift to stay,
They went right to the chancel; in the corner of the stair
Peter set his present, everyone would see it there.
When Sunday came the sun shone through the stained glass window scene,
And patterned all the chancel floor in scarlet, blue and green,
But the clearest light, through halo bright, within that window frame
Fell straight upon Gods cabbage like a shaft of golden flame.
