Tarteel

[Stand (to pray) all night, except a little. Half of it, or a little less than that.] Or a little more;
and recite the Qur'ân (aloud) in a slow, (pleasant tone and) style {Al-Muzammil: 4}

Hadhrat Ali(RA) said regarding ‫“ ترتيل‬It is to know the tajweed of the letters and their
places of pausing”.

Tajweed

The linguistic meaning ‫ معنة لغوي‬of this is ‫( التحسين‬to beautify something).

The technical meaning ‫ معنة استلحي‬of this is ‫( المخارجو تالصفا من حقه حرف كل‬to give
every letter its right with its description and its exit)1

Benefits of learning Tajweed

The benefits of learning tajweed are many as reflected in some of the following
ahadeeth:
- The reciters of the Qur’an will be in the company of the noble and
obedient angels
‘Aa’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, relates that the Prophet (SAW) said:
“Verily the one who recites the Qur’an beautifully, smoothly, and precisely, he
will be in the company of the noble and obedient angels. And as for the one
who recites with difficulty, stammering or stumbling through its verses, then
he will have TWICE that reward.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]
- You will be from the best of people
‘Uthmaan, may Allah be pleased with him, said that the Prophet (SAW) said:
“The best of you are the ones who learn the Qur’an and teach it to others” [Al-
Bukhari]
- There are ten rewards for for each letter you recite from the Quran
“Whoever reads a letter from the Book of Allah, he will have a reward. And
that reward will be multiplied by ten. I am not saying that “Alif, Laam,
Meem” is a letter, rather I am saying that “Alif” is a letter, “laam” is a letter
and “meem” is a letter.” [Tirmidhi states this is saheeh]
- The Qur’an will lead you to Paradise!
The Qur’an is an intercessor, something given permission to intercede, and it
is rightfully believed in. Whoever puts it in front of him, it will lead him to
Paradise; whoever puts it behind him, it will steer him to the Hellfire.” [An
authentic hadith found in At-Tabaraanee, on the authority of ‘Abdullaah ibn
Mas’ood]

There are 14 types of Qira’at (recitation) of which 7 are agreed upon and well known:
1) ‫نافع مدني‬
2) ‫مكي عبدا ل كثير ابن‬
3) ‫بصري امرابو‬
4) ‫عامر دمشقي ابن‬
5) ‫ كوفيحفص‬- ‫صمعا عن حفص‬2
6) ‫الكساءي كوفي‬
7) ‫همزة كوفي‬

The Harakaat (vowels)

Tanween

It is important to note the letter or harakah which appears before a letter (‫ )ما قبل‬or
after a letter ( ‫)بعدما‬.

Noon Saakinah or Tanween

To summarise, there are four rules which apply whenever the Noon Saakinah or
Tanween occurs in the Quranic text. Depending on the letter which precedes the Noon
Saakinah or Tanween the following rules apply:

• ‫القلب‬

The Changing:- If the letter ‫ ب‬appears after a Noon Saakinah or Tanween the
sound of the ‫ ن‬must change to the sound of a ‫ م‬and this must be read as if the
Noon Saakinah / Tanween was truly precded by a ‫م‬

• ‫الدغام‬

The Merging:- If the letters ‫ ي ر م ل و ن‬precede a Noon Saakinah the ‫ ن‬merges

partially or completely. The letters ‫ ل‬and ‫ ر‬are pronounced without a nasal
sound.

• ‫الظهار‬

The Making Clear:- In the case of the six letters of the throat ((‫حروف الحلقي‬
which are ‫ ح خ ع غ ه ء‬the ‫ ن‬is read clearly

• ‫الخفاء‬

The Hiding:- This applies to the remaining 15 letters of the alphabet ie.

In these cases the ‫ ن‬is hidden so it is not clear but also not merged into the
next letter
