que ellas han sido percibidas como fbricas en las que se emplea
una variedad de capital intelectual, gozando de cierto grado de
autonoma y distancia social para la bsqueda de su negocio,
el conocimiento. Este modelo institucional de las naciones ms
avanzadas ha sido replicado una multitud de veces en todo el
mundo. La presencia de instituciones cientcas de tipo occidental
en el mundo en desarrollo ha sido ampliamente aceptada como
una indicacin de modernidad. La institucionalizacin de la
ciencia occidental en el mundo en desarrollo procedi tanto como
un instrumento de los intereses de los pases ms avanzados y
tambin como el resultado de intentos activos por parte de las
naciones subdesarrolladas de dominar el conocimiento que era la
promesa de modernidad.
Pero como lo he sugerido en otro trabajo (Vessuri 1994:
168-20), esta nocin personicada en innidad de proyectos de
instituciones creadas a lo largo de la historia moderna en los pases
en desarrollo, ha estado acompaada de un xito muy desigual y
en general por dicultades de consolidacin. No es construyendo
un escenario modelado segn los occidentales, (como se esperaba
en el pasado) ni urgiendo a los pases en desarrollo (como sucede
hoy) a que participen en el sistema emergente de produccin
de conocimiento distribuido, que se espera que sirva de soporte
a las industrias de conocimiento necesarias para sostener la
competitividad internacional, que los pases pobres podrn
lograrlo.
La red tcnica internacional mayormente de base
corporativa o el sistema distribuido ya existente en el mundo
hoy es bsicamente una combinacin de comunicaciones
corporativas internas, acuerdos tcnicos, relaciones de trabajo e
intercambios tcnicos informales. Es un sistema que proporciona
acceso a avances tcnicos internacionales en campos, desarrollos
o mercados particulares. El acceso no es tan abierto como se
publicita. Ms bien, tiene lugar por medio de vinculaciones y
recursos previos. Aunque ciertamente signica una oportunidad y
un desafo para la gestin creativa y dinmica del conocimiento, la
competicin es tan intensa y los recursos requeridos tan complejos
y costosos que los pases y las instituciones han tenido que hacer
uso de otros mecanismos para operar efectivamente en una escala
global. Cul ser el papel para los pases en desarrollo en el nuevo
sistema de produccin distribuida del conocimiento?, slo el de
consumidores pasivos de productos de informacin predigeridos?
A pesar de las pretendidas ventajas del Modo 2 para encarar
problemas locales relevantes, lo que est sucediendo es que,

Estados Unidos con una beca del gobierno de Venezuela e hizo dos
aos de formacin bsica en medicina interna en la Universidad de
Harvard. Dado el hecho de que Venezuela es un pas rico en petrleo,
no sorprende que su siguiente beca de tres aos para formarse en
inmunologa (julio 1969-junio 1972) fuera otra vez de su pas, una
situacin no muy frecuente en las naciones del Sur. Complet un
grado de Maestra en los Hospitales Robert B. Brigham y Peter
B. Brigham de la Escuela Mdica de Harvard, pero no se qued
para obtener un ttulo de doctor porque sus compromisos familiares
lo obligaron a regresar a Caracas.4 Su decisin de orientarse en
la inmunologa estuvo inuida por su hermano mayor quien, en
ese momento, estaba haciendo investigacin en cardiologa en
los Estados Unidos y que le seal la falta de dicha disciplina en
Venezuela. Siendo un clnico, Bianco capt las ventajas de integrar
el conocimiento inmunolgico recientemente adquirido en la
prctica mdica local.
Gracias a una alianza entre bilogos moleculares e
inmunlogos celulares la teora inmunolgica y, en efecto, toda
la disciplina estaban comenzando a ejercer una inuencia de
largo alcance sobre otras disciplinas biolgicas y mdicas en
el mbito internacional.5 Las investigaciones inmunolgicas
estaban penetrando los mbitos de los transplantes, alergias,
estados de deciencia auto-inmune e inmune, al igual que el
status inmune de varias enfermedades, reas que ms tarde
Bianco y su grupo exploraran en Caracas. Su propia experiencia
como estudiante en Harvard a nales de la dcada de 1960,
cuando la disciplina sufra un cambio conceptual rpido y
existan muy pocos departamentos inmunolgicos o revistas
claramente denidas como inmunolgicas, lo ayudaron a denir
su ambicin.6 La visin integral de las respuestas inmunolgicas
mediadas por anticuerpos y clulas que entonces prevaleca
entre los inmunlogos de Harvard le proporcion a Bianco un
modelo de investigacin apropiado. Su visin de la temtica
encaja estrechamente con el argumento de Ilana Lowy que la
existencia de conceptos de frontera en la inmunologa denidos
de manera poco precisa ha facilitado la interaccin entre mdicos
y bilogos haciendo posible la articulacin entre ciertas tareas
mdicas y cientcas.7 A travs de la nueva inmunologa, los
profesionales de diferentes tradiciones podan adaptarse a un
ambiente cognoscitivo y social cambiante mientras que protegan
su inversin en un conjunto dado de prcticas experimentales y
su autoridad sobre un campo de competencias especcas.
