Minnesota corn farmers travel to

Kansas City to speak in favor of
the Renewable Fuel Standard
KANSAS CITY, MO
(June 9, 2016) Two Minnesota corn farmers traveled
to Kansas City, MO, today
to speak out against the
Environmental Protection
Agencys (EPA) proposal
to cut the conventional
corn ethanol portion of the
federal Renewable Fuel
Standard (RFS).
The EPA is seeking to
cut the corn ethanol portion
of the RFS by 200 million
gallons below what Congress called for when the
RFS was passed in 2005
and amended in 2007. The
reduction would result in
71.4 million bushels of
corn going unsold and $271
million in lost revenue for
American corn farmers.
No distance is too
far to travel to speak out in
favor of clean, renewable,
homegrown corn ethanol,
said Jerry Demmer, a farmer
near Clarks Grove who
made the trek to Kansas City
and serves on the Minnesota
Corn Research & Promotion

Minnesota was the rst
state in the nation to blend its
fuel supply with 10 percent
corn ethanol in order to meet
air quality standards in metro
regions. Minnesota has also
broken through the mythical
blend wall, an imaginary
barrier used by EPA and the
oil industry that claims the
nations fuel supply can only
handle an ethanol blend of
10 percent.
Ethanol makes up more
than 12 percent of Minnesotas fuel supply. Were

weather
Rain, rain go away
Come again another day.
Rain, rain go away
Little Johnny wants to play.
While this little jingle might replay over and over in my head, its not
often I would wholeheartedly join in
the It can quit now chorus.
Even in a wet year, when there is
more than enough moisture, I hesitate
to damn the rain because it can shut
off just as quickly as it started. With
so many differing opinions on what
the weather should be, Ive always
thought its a good thing we cant control it, because wed be in a constant
state of chaos.
But can we control the weather?
Just a couple hours up the freeway

cloud seeding or rain enhancement
to hail suppression and fog dispersal.
Theyve worked on weather projects
in the United States and at least 18 other countries around the world.
There are many such companies in
operation today in what is apparently a
booming business. Much of the western United States uses these services
for rain enhancement.
Ever the skeptic, I wonder about
the long-term effects of messing
around with the weather. Theres even
DWKHRU\RXWWKHUHWKDWDUWLFLDOZHDWKer changers, along with the steam from
aircraft, are creating global warming.
Seriously? Like we didnt have
enough to worry about. After reading
up on this even a little, I can honestly say I didnt know how prevalent
ZHDWKHU PRGLFDWLRQ ZDV 7KH\ VD\
what you dont know cant hurt you,
so when it comes to this topic I should

theories.
We received a beautiful rain Sunday night, and Im always so grateful
when that happens. You can water
or irrigate all you want, but theres
nothing like a nice summer rain to
breathe new life into everything, even
if it wasnt dry before. I love the musty
compost smell of the earth when those

hope it keeps raining until everything
gets a good soaking.

As a farmer it used to annoy me

when it rained just enough to make the
sidewalk wet and non-farmers considered it a great rain. Or when they would
complain about not
having enough rain because their grass was
getting dry. But then
if it rained it might
ruin their weekend.
Peoples livelihoods
were on the line, but
since they didnt walk
in those shoes, I guess by Diane

derstandable.
You often hear the weather forecasters reassuring their viewers that
they will have a nice dry weekend
so as not to ruin their camping trips or
picnics, and for the most part they are
getting quite accurate. The old-timers

used to determine when to cut hay. I
recently had the pleasure of spending
time with an elderly woman who was
raised on a farm. I asked her how her
dad would decide when he should cut
hay. According to her, he would just
say, Yeah I think well go and cut some
hay down today. Simple enough.
In the absence of the technology
we have now, people used to use folklore and nature to predict the weather.
Youve probably heard a few of these
sayings. It will rain or storm if: a dog
or cat eats grass; theres no dew on the
JUDVVLQWKHPRUQLQJWKHLHVDUHELWing; your bones are aching; or the wind
is from the east.

and believe them to be true. However,
the one predictor that always alerted
me was when the kids and the cows
started acting up. When that barometer started going south, so did their
behavior. I think that goes to show
how much were truly affected by the
weather, since neither kids nor cows
are watching the forecast to clue them
in on whats ahead so they can fake a
response.
If youve been around long
enough, youve no doubt drawn your
own conclusions on various aspects of
the weather. Hot, cold, sunny, cloudy,
wet or dry, one thing is for sure well
always have something to talk about!
