Welcome Time
Welcome kids and spend time engaging in conversation and catching up. Get ready to experience
todays story.
Before kids arrive, pray for each regular attendee by name. Pray for those who might visit your group
for the first time. Thank God for His constant, continuing presence. Pray that His presence would be
felt; especially by the kids who need to feel it. Pray that kids would be emboldened by Gods presence
in their everyday lives; that they would be brave facing everyday challenges both big and small.
Bible Story: Joshua 5:136:27 Please use as a reference
Now when Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him with a drawn
sword in his hand. Joshua went up to him and asked, Are you for us or for our enemies? Neither, he
replied, but as commander of the army of the LORD I have now come. Then Joshua fell facedown to
the ground in reverence, and asked him, What message does my Lord have for his servant? The
commander of the LORDs army replied, Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is
holy. And Joshua did so. Now the gates of Jericho were securely barred because of the Israelites. No
one went out and no one came in. Then the LORD said to Joshua, See, I have delivered Jericho into
your hands, along with its king and its fighting men. March around the city once with all the armed men.
Do this for six days. Have seven priests carry trumpets of rams horns in front of the ark. On the seventh
day, march around the city seven times, with the priests blowing the trumpets. When you hear them
sound a long blast on the trumpets, have the whole army give a loud shout; then the wall of the city will
collapse and the army will go up, everyone straight in. So Joshua son of Nun called the priests and

said to them, Take up the ark of the covenant of the LORD and have seven priests carry trumpets in
front of it. And he ordered the army, Advance! March around the city, with an armed guard going
ahead of the ark of the LORD. When Joshua had spoken to the people, the seven priests carrying the
seven trumpets before the LORD went forward, blowing their trumpets, and the ark of the LORDs
covenant followed them. The armed guard marched ahead of the priests who blew the trumpets, and
the rear guard followed the ark. All this time the trumpets were sounding. But Joshua had commanded
the army, Do not give a war cry, do not raise your voices, do not say a word until the day I tell you to
shout. Then shout!11 So he had the ark of the LORD carried around the city, circling it once. Then the
army returned to camp and spent the night there. Joshua got up early the next morning and the priests
took up the ark of the LORD. The seven priests carrying the seven trumpets went forward, marching
before the ark of the LORD and blowing the trumpets. The armed men went ahead of them and the rear
guard followed the ark of the LORD, while the trumpets kept sounding. So on the second day they
marched around the city once and returned to the camp. They did this for six days. On the seventh day,
they got up at daybreak and marched around the city seven times in the same manner, except that on
that day they circled the city seven times. The seventh time around, when the priests sounded the
trumpet blast, Joshua commanded the army, Shout! For the LORD has given you the city! The city and
all that is in it are to be devoted to the LORD. Only Rahab the prostitute and all who are with her in her
house shall be spared, because she hid the spies we sent. But keep away from the devoted things, so
that you will not bring about your own destruction by taking any of them. Otherwise you will make the
camp of Israel liable to destruction and bring trouble on it. All the silver and gold and the articles of
bronze and iron are sacred to the LORD and must go into his treasury. When the trumpets sounded, the
army shouted, and at the sound of the trumpet, when the men gave a loud shout, the wall collapsed; so
everyone charged straight in, and they took the city. They devoted the city to the LORD and
destroyed with the sword every living thing in itmen and women, young and old, cattle, sheep and
donkeys. Joshua said to the two men who had spied out the land, Go into the prostitutes house and
bring her out and all who belong to her, in accordance with your oath to her. So the young men who
had done the spying went in and brought out Rahab, her father and mother, her brothers and sisters
and all who belonged to her. They brought out her entire family and put them in a place outside the
camp of Israel. Then they burned the whole city and everything in it, but they put the silver and gold and
the articles of bronze and iron into the treasury of the LORDs house. But Joshua spared Rahab the
prostitute, with her family and all who belonged to her, because she hid the men Joshua had sent as
spies to Jerichoand she lives among the Israelites to this day. At that time Joshua pronounced this
solemn oath: Cursed before the LORD is the one who undertakes to rebuild this city, Jericho: At the
cost of his firstborn son he will lay its foundations; at the cost of his youngest he will set up its gates.
So the LORD was with Joshua, and his fame spread throughout the land.

What You Need: Paper, markers, tape

What You Do:
Hand out paper and markers.
Instruct kids to write Joshua 1:9 (just the reference) along one of the shorter edges of the paper
(so it can be seen when the paper is rolled into a trumpet/cone shape).
Help the kids roll their papers into a cone shape to make a trumpet/megaphone and tape them
so they wont unroll.
What You Say:
Trumpets have been used to announce important moments for centuries. [Transition] Today, we are
going to learn about a time when trumpets helped Gods people.
Lead your group to the Large Group area.

Activity #1
Paper, markers or crayons
What You Do:
Have the kids imagine and draw a superhero of their own creation.
It can be a combination of superheroes they know or one they completely make up.
Ask them questions to guide their creation of their superheroes:
o What powers do these heroes have?
o What makes them special?
o Who are their enemies?
o How do they defeat their enemies?
Let kids show their heroes to the group and explain their powers.
What You Say:
Those are some awesome superheroes! Imagine if you had your superhero following you around in
real life. Would you be scared of the dark or of taking a spelling test? Of course not. The superhero
being there would help you be brave. Well, we kind of DO have our own superhero with us all the time!
God is with us all the time and is more powerful than any superhero that we could imagine. No matter
what challenge we are facing, we can do the right thing because we know God is with us. [Bottom
Line] You can do what you should because God is with you.

Activity #2
What You Need: Paper, markers, dominoes or blocks, markers, horns from earlier, Bible
What You Do:
Tell kids they get to re-enact the Bible story.
First, write JERICHO on a piece of paper and place it on the floor.
Kids can draw what might be in a city (such as homes, people, dogs, etc.) and place those
props around Jericho.
Follow the guide below to lead the kids through the re-enactment.
If time allows and kids are enthusiastic about it, let them do the re-enactment again so they can
switch roles.
Jericho Re-Enactment
Why couldnt the Israelites just go in the city and take it over? What was protecting the city? (a
wall)
Instruct kids to build a domino wall around JERICHO by placing dominoes upright and next to
each other so when you knock over one they all fall.
What did God tell the Israelites to do? (walk around the city) Yes, the Israelites had to walk
around the city, kind of like a parade. So lets have a parade around the city.
The kids will be playing the part of the Israelites. Assign roles to them.
First, there were the armed men. (Pick volunteers to be the armed men to lead the parade
and give them swords. (markers) Who followed the armed men? (the priests with horns) (Pick
volunteers to be the priests and to play the horns they made) And, at the end of the parade is
the rear guard. (Pick a couple of kids to bring up the rear and give them swords.)
How many days did the Israelites march around Jericho, trumpets blaring but no one talking?
(six) Kids march around the city once and then go to bed, and wake up and do another loop
around the city. Repeat six times. Challenge them to do it quickly, so they dont lose interest.
Day seven is different, though! Joshua yelled, SHOUT! The LORD has given you the city.
(Joshua 6:16, NIrV) And what happened? (the Israelites shouted and the walls came crashing
down and the Israelites took the city) Start the dominos falling as the kids are yelling, and then
the kids rush in, take the city, and celebrate.
What You Say:
You did an excellent job retelling the Bible story. The Bible doesnt tell us what the people of Jericho
did for the first six days the Israelites marched around their city. Maybe the people of Jericho sat up on
the wall wondering what the Israelites were up to. Maybe by day three they started yelling at the
Israelites and making fun of them and calling them crazy. Maybe the people of Jericho were scared and
hid inside their homes, hoping the Israelites would just leave. I wonder how the Israelites felt as they
walked around Jericho for six days. Do you think they were afraid? Do you think they felt silly? Do you
think they might have been confused? It takes courage to trust God will do what He says He will do
even when it isnt clear how God is going to do it. God promised the Israelites they would conquer
Jericho and though it wasnt clear how God was going to make that promise come true, the Israelites
were brave because they knew God was with them. God wasnt just with the Israelites. [Bottom Line]
You can do what you should because God is with you, too!

[Make It Personal] (Share about a time when Gods presence helped you be brave. Was there a
particular occurrence that showed you God was with you that gave you courage to be brave? If
so, share it with the group.)

Prayer

Time

What You Need: No supplies needed

What You Do:
Remind kids of the Bottom Line: [Bottom Line] You can do what you should because God is
with you.
Talk about how it is difficult for us to remember that God is with us sometimes because we cant
see God with our eyes.
Remind them that they can see the things God has given them and the people who show Gods
love to them, but that the best way to remember that God is with us is through prayer.
Lead the kids through a prayer asking God to help us to feel His love and encouragement when
we remember that He is with us.
What You Say:
We will often face scary choices and situations in life. There will be big scary things, little scary things,
and all kinds of scary in- between. But we never have to let our fear be what makes our choices for us
because God is with us and we can find courage when we remember how much God loves us.
[Bottom Line] You can do what you should because God is with you.
Make sure kids take their superhero pictures home and tell their families what superhero is always with
them.
