Environment Configuration

Lab Guide
Introduction
You previously used the Process Engineers environment without knowing how it was created for you. Here,
you will learn how to create and modify an environment using the text editor WordPad. You will build your
own environment, named Tank1_Env, and assign the previously built displays to its Menu and Display bars.
Then, you will password protect your environment.
Enabling Objectives:
1

Describe the commands commonly used in Environment files.

Create a new environment named Tank1_Env

Create a Menu Bar file (.mbr) and customize its content.

Create a Display Bar file (.dbr) and customize its content.

Assign a password to the new environment.

CREATING THE ENVIRONMENT FILE

In order to create our Tank1_Env.env file, you will copy the Process_Eng.env file and then rename it.
On an AW70, this shall be accomplished by using WordPad.
1. Select Start from the Task Bar, expand Programs>Accessories, and then select WordPad. A
blank WordPad window appears.
2. Select [File], and then Open in the WordPad window. The Open dialog box appears.
Shortcuts for this operation include:

Pressing the Ctrl and O keys

Clicking the Open toolbar button

3. Change to the D: drive and open the opt, fox, and env folders.
4. Open the Files of type pull-down list and select All Documents. All the environment files now
appear.
5. Click the Details button. The list changes to display the file extensions (e.g., .env, .mbr).
6. Select the Process_Eng.env file, and then click the Open button. This shows the contents of the
Process_Eng.env configuration file.
7. From the menu bar, select Edit and then Replace from the drop down menu.
8. Replace all references to Process_Eng with Tank1_Env. Ensure that the file extensions (e.g.,
.dbr, .mbr) are kept.
9. Select [File] and then Save As in the WordPad window. The Save As dialog box appears.
10. Enter Tank1_Env.env in the File Name field. Note: It is important to include the quotation
marks in the file name. This ensures that the file is not saved as a text document.
11. Minimize WordPad.
12. From FoxView, access the Tank1_Env environment. Tank1_Env appears in FoxViews task bar.

Why doesnt the menu bar appear?

CREATING THE MENU BAR FILE

Using the same strategy as above, you will now create a Menu Bar file for the Tank1_Env.
1. Recall WordPad and open the D:/opt/fox/env/Process_Eng.mbr file.
2. Replace Disp_&1 with &Tank1.
3. Replace the path adjacent to &Tank1 with /opt/menus/d3.
This will result in the Tank1 key displaying the contents /opt/menus/d3 directory.
4. Save this file as Tank1_Env.mbr (ensure that you include the quotation marks in the file
name as shown).
5. Exit WordPad.
6. Check your work by again accessing the Tank1_Env environment.

What happens when Tank1 is selected in the menu bar?

CREATING THE DISPLAY BAR FILE

The display bar of the Tank1_Env environment shall consist of 8 buttons. Since the Process_Eng
environment utilizes 18 buttons, you will instead copy the Initial.dbr file from the Initial environment,
which contains 8 buttons on the Display Bar.
1. Recall WordPad and open the D:/opt/fox/env/Initial.dbr file.
2. Change the path connection assigned to buttons 5 and 6 to /opt/menus/d3/TANK1_DISP.
3. Connect button 7 to /opt/menus/d3/TANK1_GRP.
4. Connect button 8 to $INITDSP.
5. Save the file as Tank1_Env.dbr (ensure that you include the quotation marks as shown).
6. Exit WordPad.
7. Check the operation of the Tank1 environment by recalling the Tank1 environment and testing
the operation of buttons 5-8.
Note that the buttons are labeled with the actual display file names (e.g., Initial_Disp,
TANK1_DISP, TANK1_GRP ).

ACCESSING ENVIRONMENTS WITH PASSWORDS

There can only be one password per environment. The password is established by running the
dmsepass command after the environment has been configured. Implement a password for the Tank1
environment using the section that applies to your system.
1. Select Start from the Task Bar, expand Programs, expand Accessories and then select
Command Prompt. The Command Prompt dialog box appears.
2. Chang to the D drive by entering d:. The prompt changes to D:\>.
3. Change to the directory containing the dmsepass command by entering:
cd \usr\fox\wp\bin\tools
The prompt changes to D: \usr\fox\wp\bin\tools>.
4. List the contents of this directory by entering ls.
5. Ensure that dmsepass.exe is in this directory.
6. Assign a password by entering:
dmsepass Tank1_Env p PASSWORD (replacing PASSWORD with a password
of your own choosing)
7. Exit the Command Prompt.
8. Reenter the Tank1 environment. This should only be possible by entering the password you
chose.
Removing a Password
1. Open either the Command Prompt.
2. Change to the directory containing the dmsepass command (/usr/fox/wp/bin/tools).
3. Remove the password by entering:
dmsepass Tank1_Env (without the p and PASSWORD)
4. Exit the Command Prompt.
5. Reenter the Tank1 environment. This should now be possible without entering a password.
