ESSAY ON THE SEVEN WASTES OF ENTERPRISES

BASED ON THE THEORY OF INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING

AND LEAN PRODUCTION

If we all could imagine a world without waste production nor work

inefficiency, the life's of many companies would still be alive today
up and running. The production of waste causes major
environmental impacts and implies the use of material, energy and
the depletion of the Earth's renewable and non-renewable
resources. Waste issues and their solutions are inevitably linked to
the production and consumption of a series of industrial techniques
or methods that are appropriate for obtaining the highest form of
optimization of waste production and the answer to greatly
increasing profits in enterprises, and this techniques are: Industrial
Engineering Methods and Lean production methods.

There are seven wastes from the point of lean production:

inventory, overproduction, waiting, unnecessary transport, extra
action, defective products and excess processing. In the method of
Industrial Engineering we can find a series of techniques that allow
the elimination of the seven wastes:
1) Four principles of ECRS: an analysis and optimization techniques
of industrial engineering. The content of ECRS is eliminate,
combine, rearrange and simple.

2) Method research: includes process analysis, operations analysis

and motion analysis. It analyzes the system from the three aspects
of motilin, operating and procedures, to detect and eliminate extra
action, unnecessary transport and time wasted during production.
3) Logistic planning: is to analyze worthless activities of logistics of
the production site: whether exists the unnecessary inventory,
unnecessary handling, unnecessary waiting, etc.
In the Lean production methods we are confronted with a series of
processes that allows us to be sure of the elimination of waste
production. As a first process, we have the effectiveness in the use
of human work, machinery, materials and production to make sure
that we are attacking the appropriate quantity and quality of
products in the time and place. As a result of this, we achieve a
minimum capital investment and a maximum output over the
industry. On a second process we have Standard Work, which is the
basis for improving operating efficiency, but also the basis for
improvement, and the ultimate goal is to eliminate all waste. There
are three elements for standard operation; take time, production
order and the number of standard products. On a third basis of a
process, exists Level Production, which is to ensure each job nodes
close together in the production process, neither more production,
neither fewer production, so there would be no in-process
inventory so everything can be optimized to its maximum capacity.
Then we have Pull Production, that can be seen as the direct
demand of the customer over what the enterprise produces (what
the customer needs) and if this is applied correctly in the right
direction, it can reduce greatly the quantity and inventory pressure
of funds. As number five arrives, we have Total Productive
Maintenance, that can be interpreted as team cooperation.
Emphasizing full efficiency, system-wide and full staff participate,
in order to develop and maintain a long-term preventative
maintenance program in order to acquire the device as the target.
The last process that can be found to enclose the lean production
methods, is the Total Quality Management (TQM) which attacks the
quality environment of the company. With the support of statistics,

professional support, management techniques on scientific

background, we can create a product that provides and meets all
consumers needs in a complete and effective way.
In conclusion, we can state that there are a lot of effective ways to
eliminate waste. With source of study and analysis, we can be sure
of the reduction of the seven wastes in a company (inventory,
overproduction, waiting, unnecessary transport , extra action,
defective products and excess processing) achieving a well
management process and, of course, the maximum profit
production. Another good thing that comes by applying a method
that reduces waste, is the outcome of eliminating a great deal of
costs that affect in a direct way to the companys cash flow and
economic department. In this essay, we developed some Industrial
Engineering Methods and some of the most efficient Lean
production methods that exist for the elimination of wastes in the
industry.
