Logarithmic Functions, Equations and Inequalities
Lesson 1:
Steps in solving an Equation involving Logarithmic Functions.
1. Isolate the logarithmic function,
2. (a) If convenient, express both sides as logs with the same base and equate
the arguments of the log functions.
(b) Otherwise, rewrite the log equation as an exponential equation.
Example:
Solve the following equations :
1.) log117 (1 3x) = log117 x2 3
2.) 2 ln(x 3) = 1
Lesson 2:
Solve the following inequalities:
1 . ) (log2 (x))< 2 log2 (x) + 3
2.)
x log(x + 1) x
Lesson 3: Problem Solving on Logarithmic Functions

Problems
A. Half-Life Concept.
Radiation from radioactive decay is used routinely for many purposes.
Nuclear medicine makes use of radioisotopes for diagnosis and treatment.
Half-life is defined as the time it takes for half the nuclei in a sample of a
radioisotope to decay. In mathematical equation, the half-life of a
radioisotope can be computed using the equation given below:
T age = HL * log (B / E)
log 2
where:
HL = the half-life of the radioisotope
B = beginning amount
E = ending amount

Problem 1.
The amount of carbon-14 in an ancient wooden bowl is found to be one-fourth
that in a new piece of wood. How old is the bowl if the half-life of carbon-14 is
5700 years?
Given:
Carbon-14s half life: 5730 years
Amount left : one-fourth of the wood
Required: T age , age of the bowl
Solution:
Let B/E =1/ = 4
HL = 5730 years
T age = 5730 * log (1/1/4)/log 2 = 5730 *( log4/log2)
= 5730 (2)
= 11 460 years
Problem 2:
Iodine-131, a beta emitter, has a half-life of 8 days. A 2-gram sample of initially pure
iodine-131 is stored for 32 days. How much iodine -131 remains in the sample
afterwards?
Given:
HL : 8 days, Tage = 32 days
B, Initial amount = 2 grams
Required: E = remaining amount in grams
Solution:
32 =8 * log (2/E)/log 2
4
= log (2/E)/log2
or (log 2 log E)/log 2 = 1-log E/log 2
4log 2 = log (2/E)
1.2041 = log 2 log E
-log E = 1.2041-log2
-log E = 1.2041 -0.3010 = 0.9030
E = 0.25 gram

B. Earthquake magnitude:
In 1935 Charles Richter defined the magnitude of an earthquake to be
R = log (I/I())
where:
I = the intensity of the earthquake (measured by the amplitude of a
seismograph reading taken 100 km from the epicenter of the
earthquake)
I() = 1 is the minimum intensity used for comparison
3. Application:
"Loudness" is measured in decibels. The formula for the loudness of a
sound is given by:
dB = 10log[ I I0 ]
where:
I0 is the intensity of "threshold sound", or sound that can barely be
perceived.
Other sounds are defined in terms of how many times more intense they
are than threshold sound.
Problem:
A cat's purr is about 316 times as intense as threshold sound, for a
decibel rating of:

Db =
=
=
=

10 log (I / I0)
10 log (316 I0/ I0)
10log (316)
24.99 ~ 25 dB

2. If the normal conversation is more intense than the cats purr, 26 times
more intense, what is the intensity of the sound compared with the
threshold sound?
Answer: 39.4dB

4. Evaluation:
Complete the table given for the radioactive isotope:
