AmsterdamhasannouncedplanstobecomethefirstcityintheNetherlandswith
fullyelectricbustransportby2025.
Thecity'sbusfleet,whichcurrentlyrunsondieselfuel,willbegraduallyreplaced
withelectricvehicles.Afirstbatchof40electricbuseswillarriveonAmsterdam's
streetsintwoyearstime,accordingtoDutchnewspaperVolkskrant.
TheferryserviceconnectingthecitycentrewiththeboroughofAmsterdamNoord
willalsobeelectrified.
'Thisprojectmeanswearesayinggoodbyetosymbolicbehaviourandpilot
projects,'saysAbdeluhebChoho,Amsterdam'sAldermanforSustainability.'We
havedecidedtojustdoit,nottoexperimentwithfivebuses.'
OtherDutchcitiesandregionalgovernmentsarealsolookingintoelectrifyingtheir
publictransport.TheprovinceofNorthBrabanthasintroducedbatterypowered
busesinsomeareasandpilotprojectsareunderwayinMaastrichtandUtrecht.
ThebuscompanyAbelliohasalsopledgedtoensurethatthe300busesoperating
inLimburgwillbeelectricifitwinsthetendertosupplybusservicesinthe
province.
