Supervisor Introductions
Gear Labs Supervisor
Madison Ellington was born and raised in the rugged wilderness of Alaska. Eventually, she made
her way to Eastern Washington University where she received a BA in Recreation and Tourism
Management. She brought her degree back to Alaska and worked as a NOLS instructor, directed
Alaska Pacific Universitys outdoor program, and managed an Adventure Therapy Bereavement
camp for children. Growing up with no electricity or running water, and days from any civilized
villages, she learned early on what the essentials and amenities are while in the woods. After
gaining valuable experience, she decided to move back to Washington and share her knowledge
of gear and the backcountry with others. She is a handy woman who believes that there is no
such thing as bad weather, just bad gear.

Instructional Course Supervisor

Cayla Gleaton has been instructing outdoor recreational programs and classes for the past five
years. She is a graduate from Eastern Washington University with a bachelors degree in
Recreation and Tourism Management. After graduating from EWU she worked for a year for
Un-Cruise Adventures following her internships, jobs and courses through NOLS where she
worked for three years before coming here to work full time. She is passionate about being
outside and getting more people outside to experience all that the outdoors has to offer.

Equestrian Programs Supervisor

With vast knowledge on all things horses, Olivia Hortegas is responsible for running the ranch as
well as supervising all trips involving horses and mules for transportation and packing. Olivia
not only grew up on a ranch but graduated from Eastern Washington University with a degree in
Outdoor Recreation. Her knowledge about horses as well as her passion for the outdoors will
allow participants an enjoyable and educational experience.

Guiding and Transportation Supervisor

Like many founders of Cascade Outfitters, Brendan has a unique and rather unlikely past.
Brendan was born and raised in the rural community of Okanogan, Washington. Okanogan High
School was the source of his diploma, though, unlike many of his peers, this for a time was the
highest academic achievement he held. His young adulthood was spent tending a deep fryer at a
local fast-food joint. However, he found this work to be deeply unsatisfying, and he realized that
a change was necessary. He began work at a local ranch where he cared for horses, and began
pursuing his dreams of exploring the wilderness. Realizing that he could indeed make a career
for himself in this area, he took certification after certification, class after class in pursuit of his
dream of leading backcountry trips. His acquired skill with horses combined with his love of the
backcountry made the preparation easy, and soon enough, he was sharing his passion with
anyone who would register for his classes at the newly founded Cascadia Outfitters.

Cascadia Outfitters

Business Description
Cascadia Outfitters is a backcountry gear rental and guide service that offers instructional
courses for various aspects of wilderness travel and stay. We also offer transportation packages
to take you where you need to go. Our knowledgeable staff and experienced guides will work
with you to create an adventure of a lifetime. Join us for an hour long class learning how to make
your own snowshoes, or embark on a weeklong adventure with one of our professional guides.
Whatever adventure you choose, it will be worth it if you choose Cascadia Outfitters.

Mission
We strive to provide transportation and knowledge to the common outdoorsman to assist them in
the transition from front-country thinking to backcountry preparedness.

Vision
To become the premier provider of commercial backcountry services in the cascade region.
Setting
Cascadia outfitters is a private commercial recreation business.

Location
Our office is located right outside of the Cascade Mountains in a location that has mountain trails
accessible. Our guided tours take place in the mountain ranges surrounding us and the majority
of our classes and activities take place at our office.

Climate
We are open year round and will operate in warm and cold climates. A thick layer of snow is
present from autumn to spring with temperatures ranging depending on the region you are in.
Systems coming in from the Pacific Ocean provide lush green geography, and plenty of water in
the warmer months. Cascadia Outfitters has gear for all seasons and will be available to supply
you with a guide year round. If you are just looking to rent gear or attend a course, our services
will provide you with the essentials for any season or climate within the Cascades.

Resources
The staff at Cascadia outfitters works hard every season to obtain the permits and licenses
needed to travel in the backcountry of the cascades. Cascadia Outfitters has obtained a business
license to operate in the state of Washington and has also taken out a loan from the Bank of
America to cover capital expenses.

Population
We are marketing ourselves primarily to the common outdoorsman and woman who want to
experience what the Backcountry has to offer but does not have enough knowledge or gear to get
themselves out there. We want to open our services to all experience levels, but our primary
market will be those who need a little extra help making their way through the mountains.

Equestrian Program Capital Outlay

Item #1: Pack Horses
Pack horses are imperative for the equestrian program in order to offer hands on experience to
clients in packing and riding. An increase of business will occur when customers without their
own pack animals sign up for programs that use real animals in them. Once clients feel more
comfortable riding and packing the animals themselves they will be more likely to sign up for
more classes and trips offered by the business.

crossing rivers, carrying packs etc. | Cost: $1,500 Each or $15,000 for 10

Item #2 Saddles
In order for Cascadia Outfitters to allow guests the opportunity to pack and ride, it is essential for
enough saddles to be provided for each horse available. By offering the use of saddles to clients,
they are more likely to attend classes since the provision of their own saddle will not be required.
This will allow for a higher participation level in many of the classes and programs offered by
Cascadia Outfitters which will lead to an increase in profits as well.

Instructional Courses Capital Outlay

Item #1: AED Trainers
As a part of the Wilderness First Responder Training, an AED would allow participants to be
certified as AED administers too. An AED trainer would help get more people instructed on how
to use an AED if they were to come across an accident in the front or back country. Cascadia
Outfitters strives for our clients and students to be the most prepared they can be and this is an
additional way that we can help prepare them.
$1,218 ($406 per unit) Cardiac Science Full-Size AED Trainer- This is a full trainer that
would allow students to get the full training. It can teach Semi-Automatic and fully
automatic defibrillation. http://www.aedsuperstore.com/
$1,110 ($370 per unit) Nasco Life/AED Trainer- This trainer covers all four
recommended AED scenarios giving our students a wide variety of training! http://firstaid-product.com
$1,197 ($399 per unit) Cardiac Science Powerheart G3 Trainer- This realistic trainer has
the ability to vary situations to keep our students on their toes! As a plus it has reusable
training pads to help reduce our impact. http://www.aed.com
Item #2: Avalanche Shovels
Having avalanche shovels will be essential for our avalanche trainings. We want our students to
have practice with certain scenarios so that if something happens they have an idea what to do.
After all, experience with a certain situation will help them to react faster in a real scenario.
Ideally I would want 15 different shovels to provide enough for the class along with extras.
$1,019.4 ($67.96 per shovel) Back Country Access Dozer Hoe Shovel- This shovel is
aluminum with a slide proof shaft that would help make the shoveling a little easier for
students. http://www.backcountry.com/
$660 ($44 per shovel) Back country Shovel- This shovel is aluminum and tough with a
D-Grip and light weight for carrying to the site. http://www.backcountry.com
$1,049.25 ($69.95 per shovel) Black Diamond Deploy 3 Shovel- This shovel is the whole
package with an aluminum blade, Hybrid D/T handles and a collapsible shaft to make it
easier to pack.

At Cascadia Outfitters, we guarantee that anyone can find a guided service right for them. From
exposed climbs to leisurely horseback trips, there is something for everyone to enjoy. The
guiding principles of Cascadia Outfitters ensure that we hit the target each and every trip:
To provide educational, safe, and enjoyable adventures for all.
This simple but powerful statement has led to the creation of many programs, with enough
variety to serve any participants. These activities can be organized into three levels. Level 1
programs are those that best serve the newfound outdoorsman, with components of education in
basic backcountry skills. Level 2 programs are excellent for those who have some background in
outdoor pursuits, but feel they could learn a little more or use a little help getting into the
wilderness. Finally, level 3 programs are best suited to experienced outdoorsmen and generally
cater fast-paced guided adventures, such as backcountry skiing on rugged peaks. Regardless of
level, Cascadia Outfitters welcomes you and guarantees you will walk away from any of our
programs with new knowledge and great memories.
Level 1: Programs found in this level are primarily educational, and seek to provide participants
with the necessary skills to become competent wilderness travelers. These classes include:
Backcountry Cooking
Survival Essentials
Backcountry Kitchens
All About Fishing
So You Shot an Animal
Level 2: In this level, we offer programs generally based around navigation and travel in the
backcountry. Level 2 courses are generally intended to develop participants ability to travel, and
range from guided backpacking trips, to snowshoeing, to horse packing services. Programs
include:
Horse Packing Service
Winter Travel: Skiing
Carry it Yourself! (a backpacking Winter Travel: Snowshoeing
based guided program)
Level 3: Designed for the experienced and intrepid backcountry explorer, this level of service
covers adventure sports for all four seasons. Participants can expect to gain technical knowledge
and have a thrilling time. Programs include:
Crag 101
Backcountry Scrambles

Item #1: Bear Proof Panniers, or Bear Boxes
To better suit the needs of participants and to adhere to Leave No Trace guidelines, the purchase
of four bear boxes is necessary. Bear boxes allow horses and other stock to carry rations
comfortably. Additionally, the bear boxes can be used to store food securely at camp. This
lessens the impact of typical bear hangs, and allows participants to easily and securely store large
amounts of food. Many areas require the use of bear boxes by law.

Bid 1: Outfitters Supply of Montana: TrailMax Bear Proof Pack Panniers

Cost: $449.95 each or $899.90 for (4)
Bid 2: Discount Horse Supplies: High Country Plastic Bear Panniers
$339.99 each or $679.98 for (4)
Bid 3: Mad Cow Metal Works: Custom Bear Proof Aluminum Panniers

With advances in technology come advances in safety. During the winter, many outdoor pursuits
involve avalanche risk. Although steps can be taken to avoid avalanches, backcountry skiing,
snowshoeing, and cross country skiingthree activities which our company providesare
inherently risky. With avalanche beacons for the participants, we can mitigate risks associated
with avalanches and be prepared for the worst. We will need a minimum of five beacons.

Bid 1: Backcountry.com: Backcountry Access Tracker DTS Beacon

$239.95each or $1199.75 for (5)
