Participants

A class that consists of 36 male and female Junior Psychology majors with ages ranging
from 17 to 21 were the participants in this experiment. The class was divided into two groups
which consist of 18 participants. The participants per group were randomly assigned via fishbowl
method.

Materials
A series of three sets of cardboards containing six 2-digit numbers, a series of 2
cardboards containing nine 2-digit numbers, a small stopwatch for keeping track of the time, and
a response sheet for writing the answers were used in the experiment.

Design
The design used in the experiment was within-groups design. The dependent variable is
the number of digits recalled whereas the independent variable is the sequence of the numbers
shown to the participants.

Procedure
There were six tables and 3 participants were asked to sit per table. Once the participants
have already settled down, the experimenter then gave the instructions. Group A was the first one
to do the experiment. The group was shown 3 sets of cardboards that contain six 2-digit
numbers. The participants were only allowed to look at the boards for 6 seconds. After 6 seconds,
the experimenter said stop and kept the boards away from the participants' view. After a 10second pause, the participants were tasked to count 10-1 loudly. Then, response sheets were

handed to them and they were told to write down the digits they were exposed to in correct order
until they were told to stop. 30 seconds were given to them to jot down their responses. After
exposing the group with the series of 2-digit numbers, the experimenter then started showing 2
sets of nine 2-digit numbers. Same procedures were followed until all cardboards were shown
and responses were jotted down. However, the sets of nine 2-digit numbers were shown for 9
seconds while 45 seconds were allotted for the writing down of responses.
For group B, the 2 sets of nine 2-digit numbers were exposed first followed by the 3 sets
of six 2-digit numbers. Same procedures as well as the time allotted were performed.
