townandyoucanhave,forexample,abrokenphotoviewerforyears
andnoonewillleaveyourproduct.
Butit'sadifferentmatterwhenyouhavepayingcustomerswhohave
paidmoneyforaparticularserviceandexpectittoworkthewaythey've
paidfor.TheFacebookmodelworksbecause,quitehonestly,95%of
whattheydohashadverylittleconsequencesforthem.Iftheybreak
stuff(asthey'vedoneoverandover)itdidn'tmatter...Facebookisfree
foralmostallusersandthere'snothingtheycancomplainaboutandno
otheralternativestogoto.
That'sslowlychangingwiththeintroductionofa(small,butsignificant)
competitor.Thisbravadothatothercompaniesshould"justbreakstuffto
movefast"doesn'tholdupifwhatyou'redoingissomethingthatpeople

Icouldarguethepointthattheybuiltalargecompanybasedon
thewaninginterestinMySpaceandbuilttheircodeusing
patternsofimplementationwhichwereputintoprecedenceby
theoriginalteam.Asnewissuesarediscovered,thesolutionsto
sucharecodifiedintothepattern.Anewteammemberwho
deviatesfromthoseanddoesnotsolvetheissuesrequiredof
themwouldhaveahardtimecontinuingtowork.Theonly
hackingwhichwouldoccurwouldbeinthefaceofanewissue.
Oncesolveditissolvedandplaceintothepattern.Thatisjust
plainsoftwareengineering.Whenyouactuallylookatthecode
ofFacebookitishighlyorganizedandengineered.Notslipshod
piecedtogethermishmash.Problemsaresolvedwithprecision
andthought.
Myoriginalpointstillstands.Theusageofthewordhackerwas
perhapsthewrongchoiceofwordsforthem.Perhapsabetter
choicewouldhavebeen"TheWayofListeningtothePeopleyou
