Lesson Topic: Setting Sail.

Recent Prior Experience:

Students have been looking at British Colonisation, Life in Britain prior to coming out and the crime and punishment present at the time.

T will ask Ss to construct a a Y Chart considering what they


think the voyage from Britain to what we now call Australia

Ss will be seated at their desks in


their table groups.

INTRODUCTION

Understand the various experiences of those


who travelled on the First Fleet.

Explore the experiences whilst travelling on the


ships.

T asks Ss to share 1 of these with each table contributing their


thoughts.

Resource needed:
- HSIE Books
- Pens/pencils

T will give each table group a source about the first fleet
focusing on the voyage. Ss will read and explore the text they
are given as a table group. T will work with each group
focusing on language and important information.

Ss will be working at their desks


and then move to the floor to watch
the video and back to their desks
after the video.

Each group will be asked to


- Tell the class what their text tells us about the First
Fleet.
- Determine what they know about the source.
- Highlight something they learnt.
- Share 1 of there 3 I wonder questions based on there
text.

Using the random sorter Ss will be put into groups (5 groups of

3 and 6 groups of 2) Each group will be allocated a ship from


the first fleet and asked to research the ship and creatively
demonstrate their understandings. (work may be presented as
a poster, brochure, interview, news report etc)

T will ask each group to share their work on their allocated


ship with the class. At the conclusion of their presentation Ss
in the group will ask the class a question based on their
presentation.
Ss in the audience will be asked to share feedback on each Ss
presentation.
