All angles refer to the angle to which the sight is pointing. If the switch is moved to
the Angle position (a) during drilling then the system will continue to measure the
length of the hole being drilled.
In the Pause position both displays will show -----.
Note
In the pause position the system stops measuring length. This could be used to
stop length measurement when flushing a hole for example, providing that
percussion is used as a drilling signal.
In the Length position (c) the displays show the penetration rate on the upper
display and drill bit position (or the laser line) on the lower display.
Gradient measurement operation (HQS 10, 11 and 12 MKII)
1. Set up the drill rig with the feed at roughly the location for the next drill hole.

Figure: Setting up.

2. Set the switch (F) in the Angle position (a).
3. Adjust the aim so that it points in the rock blasting direction. Aim at an object
as far away as possible that is easy to remember.

Note
The GPS requires 4-5 minutes in order to start after being switched on. Read
further under the chapter entitled GPS.
Operation hole depth and penetration rate measurement (HQS 11 and 12)
The drill rig is set up in accordance with the chapter Gradient measurement.
1. Set the feed so that it is positioned in the right drilling angles.
2. Apply the drill bit to the collaring point.
3. Set the rocker switch (F) in position (C). Hole depth measurement now starts,
counting the position of the drill bit as zero. The upper display shows the
penetration rate and the lower display shows the position of the drill bit.

Figure: Penetration rate and drill bit position.

4. Press button (D) and turn until the lower display shows the required hole depth.
Release the pushbutton. If the hole depth is set at 0.0 then the length stop is
switched off.
5. To activate the counter, set switch (F) in position (a) and then back to position
(c).
6. Drill down the first drill rod.
7. Close the drill-steel support and unscrew the adapter.
Depth measurement stops and after four seconds the drilling angles are shown on
the displays.
NOTE:The system measures the length between the signals Upper drill
steel support open and unscrewing. These signals must therefore come at
the beginning and end of the drill steel.

OPTIONS 3D Angle Indicator

Instruction Manual

8. Add a drill rod to the drill string.

9. Length measurement restarts when the upper drill/steel support opens.
10. Drill the hole to the desired depth.
11. Drilling stops automatically at the desired hole depth if the function Set length
is used (see points two and four above).
12. Reset with button (C).
13. Pull up the drill steel.
14. Operate to the next hole.
Note
Switch (F) must be reset from position (a) to position (C) in order that the counter
shall be activated.

Working method
General
The system has functions for measuring drilling angles, drill bit position and
penetration rate.
When the drill rig is not drilling the displays show the drilling angles. During
drilling the position of the bit and the penetration rate are shown.
When drilling is stopped the drilling angles are shown (after about four seconds).
The displays show arrows that point up for the position of the drill bit and
penetration rate and down for drilling angles.
Definition of angles
The gradient measurement system consists of:

Boom articulation sensor

Angle sensor for measuring feed angles.
Aim
Display unit for showing values.

Instruction Manual

OPTIONS 3D Angle Indicator

Angles shown on the displays are calculated in the sight direction

Figure: Fig. A
a Sight direction
b Angle direction

This is understood to mean that the boom and sight point straight ahead, that the
angles are shown as in Fig.A.

Figure: Fig. B
a Sight direction
b Angle direction

If the boom is moved the system will take this into account and present the angles
in the sights direction as in Fig. B.

Figure: Fig. C
a Sight direction
b Angle direction

If the aim is now turned the system will take this into account and present the
angles in the new sight direction as in Fig. C.

10

OPTIONS 3D Angle Indicator

Instruction Manual

The angles shown on the display refer to the direction of the bottom of the feeder.
For example, if the sight is straight ahead and the upper display shows +10 and
the lower -1.2 the drill bit is pointing 10 forward and 1.2 to the right.
Control signals for length measurement
The input signals used for controlling length measurement are per drill-steel
support open and unscrewing (drill signals 2 and 3).
When the switch (F) is set to position (c) the system adopts length measurement
mode. Here the position of the drill bit is shown on the lower display and the
penetration rate on the upper display.
If the feed is reversed the position of the drill bit will also be counted down.
When unscrewing is activated (rod handling is started) the system switches to
gradient measurement and remains there until the upper drill-steel support opens
(rod handling finished). The system then goes back to length measurement mode.
The length measurement mode can also be interrupted by setting the switch (F) to
position (b).
NB: The system measures the length between the signals upper drill-steel
support open and unthreading. So these signals must come at the
beginning and end of the drill steel.

Measurement from laser reference

Figure:
a Laser plane
b Desired finished bottom

The laser transmitter emits a beam that rotates horizontally. When the laser is set
up it adjusts itself to an exactly horizontal plane (a). This can be used as a
reference for hole depth measurement.
The laser is set up at a known height above the desired finished bench bottom. See
figure 4.
The laser is set up at a point the height of which above the finished bottom,
including underdrilling, is known.
The distance from the point to the laser plane is measured. The laser plane is now
parallel with the bottom at a height LH = L+H from the bottom.

12

OPTIONS 3D Angle Indicator

Instruction Manual

Hole depth from laser plane

A laser sensor is mounted on the cradle. This sends a signal to the system when it
is reached by the laser plane emitted at a known height above the desired finished
bench bottom.

Figure:
When drilling starts the hole depth is measured from the collaring point (upper
figure).
When the laser sensor is struck by the laser the programmed value from sensor to
drill bit is set up as the hole depth and length measurement continues from this
distance (lower figure).
As an indication that the length is now from the laser plane, the decimal point is
replaced by a colon on the length display.

General fault finding

HQS MKII uses a so-called open CAN technology. This means that it maintains
constant contact with all connected meters. If the Master (display) has
established contact with a meter then a fault message is shown in the upper
display. All meters are connected in series.
Table:

and the fuse is
blown.

There is a short circuit in +24 Vout to the sensors.

Disconnect the cable into the gradient meter.
Replace the fuse. If the fuse has not triggered then
the fault is after the gradient meter. If the fuse has
triggered then the fault is before. Disconnect the
cable to the next transducer and try again.

Note
Only use 1A fuses. If larger fuses are used then the equipment could sustain
damage.

ROC-ANGIE
General
ROC-ANGIE measures forward/rearward and right/left angles from the feed's
vertical position.
If straight vertical holes are drilled then it is unnecessary to aim ROC-ANGIE.
The drill rig can stand in any direction at all relative to the bench if ROC-ANGIE
is correctly aimed.

Figure: ROC-ANGIE

Preparations for assembly

1. Set the feed in a vertical position with the aid of a spirit level. Adjust forward/
rearward for a precise vertical reading.
2. Adjust left/right for a precise vertical reading.
3. Check that both left/right and forward/rearward are still vertical.

Assembly
1. Mount the retaining yoke/bracket or welded beam on the feeder at such a height
that the receiver is easy to read. To facilitate matters, mount ROC-ANGIE on
the same side as the drill operator.
2. Position ROC-ANGIE in the retaining yoke and tighten the bolts. If everything
is correct, both scales should now show 0 even if ROC-ANGIE is rotated
round its own axis. If this is not the case, proceed to the adjustment section.

Conditions
The feed must be in a precisely vertical position, both left/right and forward/
rearward. See the assembly section.
