- Solving Network Communication
Problems
Information
Check the following items to verify that the product is communicating with the network.

Details
Before you begin this troubleshooting procedure, print a configuration page.
1. Are any physical connection issues evident between the workstation or file server and
the product?
Verify that the network cabling, connections, and router configurations are correct. Verify
that the network cable lengths meet network specifications.
2. Are the network cables connected correctly?
Make sure that the product is attached to the network through the appropriate port and
cable. Check each cable connection to make sure that it is secure and in the right place. If
the issue continues, try a different cable or connect to different ports on the hub or
transceiver. The amber activity light and the green link status light next to the port
connection on the back of the product should be lit.
3. Can you ping the product? (Microsoft Windows)
a. Click Start , Run , type cmd , and click OK to open an MS-DOS command prompt.
b. Type ping followed by the product IP address. For example, type ping 192.168.45.39 .
If the ping command is successful, a list of replies from the product appears in the
window.
c. If you can ping the product, verify that the IP address configuration for the product is
correct on the computer. If it is correct, delete the product, and then add it again. Or if the
ping command failed, verify that the network hubs are on, and then verify that the
network settings, the product, and the computer are all configured for the same network.
4. Have any software programs been added to the network?
Make sure new programs are compatible, they are installed correctly, and use the correct
printer drivers.

5. Can other users print?

The issue might be workstation-specific. Check the workstation network drivers, printer
drivers, and redirection (capture in Novell NetWare).
6. If other users can print, are they using the same network operating system?
Check your system for the correct network operating system setup.
7. Is your protocol enabled?
Check the status of your protocol on the configuration report. You can also use the
embedded Web server, HP ToolboxFX, or Macintosh Configure Device to check the
status of other protocols.
8. Does the product appear in HP Web Jetadmin or other management programs?
a. Verify the network settings on the network configuration page.
b. Confirm the network settings for the product by using the control panel.
Title: HP Color LaserJet CP1510 Printer Series - Custom Paper Size Does Not
Appear in Paper Sizes List when Using the Postscript Driver
Issue
Custom paper sizes that have been saved in the HP Color LaserJet CP1510
Series PS driver do not appear in the Paper Sizes drop down list.

Solution
This can occur if the custom paper size has been defined incorrectly in
the printer driver. When defining customer paper sizes make sure that
the width dimension is equal to the measurement of the short edge of the
paper and the length is equal to the measurement of the long edge of the
paper. For example if you are creating a custom paper size of 8.5 inches
by 5.5 inches you would define the width as 5.5 inches and length as 8.5
inches (see Figure 1).

HP Color LaserJet CP1210 and CP1510

Printer Series - Toner gauge drops
abruptly to toner low (10%)
ISSUE: An issue has been discovered that affects the toner gauges for the Color LaserJets
CP1210 and CP1510 series printers.
Under certain circumstances, it is possible for a cartridge with a significant percent life
remaining to abruptly jump down to toner low state (10%). The following is a scenario
that demonstrate's this issue:

Recently installed a cartridge

Toner gauge appears to be working

Within a very short number of pages, toner gauge suddenly drops to toner low
state (default setting is 10%)

Cartridge continues to work and Print Quality is acceptable, but toner gauge
seems abnormally low and printer is giving an Order Supplies message

In some cases, after printing only a few pages, the toner gauge will drop to 0%
and the printer will give a Replace Supplies message

SOLUTION: Color LaserJet CP1510 series

This issue has been resolved on the Color LaserJets CP1510 series printer through a
firmware update. The new firmware (20080813) is available on hp.com (at
www.hp.com/support/LJCP1510series ). However if the cartridge has already exhibited
the order supplies state that cartridge will remain in this state and this message should
be ignored. If the printer goes to the Replace Supplies state, the customer may continue
printing in override mode to get full use of the cartridge (see instructions below for
changing override mode settings). The customer will no longer have visibility to some
supplies alerts while in override mode. The customer will have to replace the cartridges
when print quality starts to degrade. If the customer remains unsatisfied by this
recommendation to enable the printer cartridge override mode, the customers cartridge
should be replaced as a warranty return.
The next cartridge will perform as designed.
This document has been updated with release dates and firmware download instructions.
If the Cartridge Out Override Feature is enabled, customers need to be aware that the
printer will continue in Override mode, until the printer supplies setting is changed back
to the default settings by the user. If customers want visibility to toner alerts (which are

designed to be helpful in managing supplies) the printer settings will need to be returned
to the default settings.
Color LaserJet CP1210 printer series
The HP engineering team is aware of this firmware issue and is working to resolve this. A
new Firmware Version is being developed for this printer series and soon will be made
available. This document will be updated with release dates and firmware download
instructions.
Until the new firmware version is available, the customer may workaround this issue by
continuing to print, ignoring the Order Supplies message. If the printer goes to the
Replace Supplies state, the customer may continue printing in override mode to get full
use of the cartridge (see instructions below for changing override mode settings). The
customer will no longer have visibility to some supplies alerts while in override mode.
The customer will have to replace the cartridges when print quality starts to degrade.
CP1210 series:
1. Open the HP Color LaserJet CP1210 Series Toolbox.
2. Click the Device Settings folder, and then click the System Setup page.
3. Next to Cartridge out override select On to enable the override feature.
4. Select Off to disable the override feature if desired later.
CP1510 series:
1. From the products control panel, go to the Print quality menu.
2. Go to the Replace supplies submenu.
3. Select Override at out to enable the override feature.
4. Select Stop at out to disable the override feature if desired later.

HP Color LaserJet CP1210, CP1510 and CM1312 MFP Series - Tucked Blade
Issue
Release Date: 2008-08-29
Last Updated: 2008-09-02

DESCRIPTION
An issue has been discovered that affects the cartridges on Color LaserJet CP1510,
C1210, and CM1312 MFP series printers.
Under certain circumstances, the cleaning blade of some cartridges will tuck or "bend"
in the wrong direction, upon initial power up or when the first page is printed on a new
cartridge. When this happens the blade cannot clean the cartridge OPC resulting in a fullpage color page and the OPC and Imaging Belt is covered in toner (see photos below).
The print quality is unacceptable, and the customer may report a leak or full page
printed in a solid color. In addition to the excessive toner, the printer/cartridge may make
unusual noises, and in extreme cases the blade can be ripped off the cartridge and be
hanging out of the cartridge or deposited in the printer.
Figure 1: OPC/Imaging Belt covered in toner
Figure 2: Cleaning blade ripped off and hanging out of cartridge
Figure 3: OPC covered in toner
SCOPE
Cartridges used on Color LaserJet CP1510, C1210, and CM1312 MFP series printers.
RESOLUTION
This issue has been resolved and counter-measured cartridges are now available in all
regions. They are identified in two ways:
New counter measure cartridges are identified by the lot code 8H04XXXX and
higher (i.e. 8H05xxxx, 8J21xxxx etc). Lot codes on cartridges are embossed as
shown below.
Figure 4: Lot code location
Or

Reworked cartridges will have older lot codes, but can be identified by a black dot
on the white plastic located on the white gear of the print cartridge (photos
below). If the customer still has the print cartridge box, the date code on the box
will end with an R as shown in the example below, if the product has been
reworked with the counter measure.
Figure 5: Reworked cartridges with old lot codes

If a customer experiences a tucked blade, the customers cartridge should be replaced

as a warranty return.
If there is significant amount of toner in the printer (enough that can not be easily cleaned
up by the customer), offer the customer the choice of:
Returning the product to the place of purchase

Or

Repairing/replacing the product through warranty

NOTE: In this situation the cartidges that are not impacted should be
retained by the customer as the replacement printer will not include new
cartidges.

Manufacturing has also updated the HP serial number for all products manufactured with
the updated print cartridges.
CM1312 MFP series - If the 3rd digit of the serial number is 'C' (CNC or BRC)
then the unit has counter measured print cartridges in the unit

CP1510 series, CP1210 series - If the 3rd digit of the serial number is 'B' (CNB or
BRB) then the unit has counter measured print cartridges in the unit

- Firmware Fix List
Issue Description:
Following is the complete list of issues addressed in the firmware update version
20080813 and previous versions:

20080813 Fixes

Contains all previous fixes and enhancements.

Fixes the early toner low or toner gauge issue where the cartridge life percent
remaining unexpectedly drops to 10% or less. This firmware update will prevent
this issue from occurring after the update is implemented.

Fixes DHCP option 61 support MAC address no longer includes extra zeros
when responding to a DHCP server request. For example, reserving an IP address
for the device on a DHCP server now functions properly.

Fixes an issue with the ICMP route reply for ARP Customers with load
balancing turned on for their network adapter could not PING the printer.

Corrects color issues when using the HP Basic Color Match tool. Some colors
were not correct when modified in a new color theme.

20080331 Fixes

Addresses an issue where the color planes do not align correctly after printing
large continuous print jobs. After the printer cools, subsequent printing may
appear blurry or fuzzy.
Fixed the Wide A4 setting that can be set for non-Windows print jobs. Previously
configuring the Wide A4 setting to Yes had no affect.

Addresses 49/79 Service errors causing the Status Log on the Configuration Page
to become corrupt or deleted.

Corrected an issue with the font selection algorithm. The font was being selected
by font number and not by characteristics. This showed up when setting to an
Arabic symbol set and then printing a file which displays the characters of the
symbol set...no Arabic characters were printed.

Fixed an issue in the Embedded Web Server when eleven or more multiple byte
characters are entered into the Device Description field in the device description
page (under the Settings tab), the device description located above the tabs would
have garbled text.

Fixed an issue that may cause the Windows test page to only print the header or
partial page when using non-Latin values. Typically appears on two-byte
languages such as Simplified Chinese.

HP Color LaserJet CP1510 Printer

Series - Cartridge Out Override

ISSUE:
The Cartridge Out Override feature allows the printer to continue using a cartridge that
has reached the recommended replacement point.
SOLUTION:
What is it?
The HP Color LaserJet CP1510 Printer series displays an Order supplies message when a
cartridge is running low, and a Replace supplies message when a cartridge has been
depleted. To ensure optimal print quality, HP recommends replacing a cartridge when the
Replace supplies message is displayed. Replacing the cartridge at this point can help
prevent waste of media or other cartridges when one cartridge produces poor print
quality.
NOTE: Using Override may result in unsatisfactory print quality and unavailability of
certain features (such as toner remaining information).
All print defects or supply failures incurred when an HP supply is used in Override will
not be considered defects in materials or workmanship in the supply under the HP Print
Cartridge Limited Warranty Statement. For Warranty information, see Print Cartridge
Limited Warranty Statement.
Configuration:
Cartridge Out Override can be enabled from the Control Panel menu of the HP Color
LaserJet CP1510 Printer, as follows:
1. Press OK to open the menus.
2. Press the left arrow (<) or right arrow (> ) button to navigate to Device settings , and
then press OK .
3. Press the left arrow (< ) or right arrow (> ) button to navigate to Print Quality , and
then press OK .
4. Press the left arrow (< ) or right arrow (> ) button to navigate to Replace Supplies submenu, and then press OK .
5. Press the left arrow (< ) or right arrow (> ) button to navigate to Override at Out
option, and then press OK to enable the Override feature or select Stop at out to disable
the Override feature.
6. Press X to exit the menus.

If Stop at out is selected, the printer will stop printing when a cartridge reaches the
recommended replacement point. If Override out is selected, the printer will continue
printing when a cartridge reaches the recommended replacement point. The factory
default setting is Stop at out .
On-going operation:
Override can be enabled or disabled at any time, and does not have to be re-enabled for
each cartridge. The printer will automatically continue printing when a cartridge reaches
recommended replacement. The printer will display a message Replace supply Override
in use while a cartridge is used in Override mode. When the cartridge is replaced with a
new supply, Override will de-activate until another cartridge reaches recommended
replacement.

Use HP ToolboxFX to troubleshoot print-quality problems

Before proceeding, print a Supplies status page to see the approximate number of pages
remaining for each print cartridge. See Print information pages .
From the HP ToolboxFX software you can print a page that helps identify which print
cartridge is causing the problem. The print-quality troubleshooting page prints five bands
of color, which are divided into four overlapping sections. By examining each section,
you can isolate the problem to a particular cartridge.
1: Print-quality troubleshooting page bands
1 - Yellow
2 - Cyan
3 - Black
4 - Magenta

If a mark or spot appears in only one section, replace the print cartridge that
corresponds to that section.
If a mark or line appears in more than one section, replace the print cartridge that
matches the color of the mark or line.
If a repeating pattern of dots, marks, or lines appears on the page, clean the
product. See Clean the product . After cleaning the product, print another printquality troubleshooting page to see if the defect is gone.

If the problem persists, try the following:

HP LaserJet CM1312, CP1510, and

CP1210 Printer Series - One or more
color planes missing
ISSUE: The customer may experience a missing color plane if the toner cartridge door is
opened partially and then closed. This may occur anytime the toner cartridge door is not
opened fully and then closed.
SOLUTION: Open the toner cartridge door completely. Pull the toner cartridge tray so it
extends until it stops. Verify the cartridges are in the tray correctly, adjust if necessary.
Close the toner tray and toner door and try reprinting the job. If one or more of the colors
is still missing verify that the cartridge is not empty. If the issue persist contact HP
support.

CAUSE: The toner cartridge tray will disengage the toner drive mechanism when the
front door is partially opened. In some circumstances the toner drive mechanism will not
reengage when the door is closed. The result is one or more color planes will not form an
image during the printing phase.

Issue: When loading tray 1, the single-sheet priority feed slot, the printer will not grab
the paper and pull it into the printers paper path.
Solution: Bring the printer out of Power Save mode by pressing any button on the
printers control panel prior to loading paper into tray 1.

Issue: One or more of the colors is missing on the printed page.

Solution: Open the toner cartridge door completely. Pull the toner tray so it extends until
it stops. Verify the cartridges are in the tray correctly, adjust if necessary. Close the toner

Issue: Printer may become unresponsive when canceling a print job from the control
panel while multiple jobs are pending.
Workaround: Power cycle the printer to return the printer to a Ready state.
Issue: Maximum domain name length accepted by the printer from DHCPv4 server is
only 124 characters. When the DHCPv4 server attempts to provide a domain name of 125
characters or more, the domain name field will contain whatever was the previous
"working" value of domain name.
Workaround: Use only domain names of 124 characters or less.
Issue: When using the Print on both sides (manually) feature in the HP Color LaserJet
CP1510 Series PCL 6 printer driver, the printer may stop before the job has completed
and return to a Ready state. The last page to print has the following text:
PCL XL error
Subsystem: KERNEL
Error: ExtraData
Operator: 0x46
Position: xxxx (represents a 4 digit number)

x:\Drivers\Win2K_XP_Vista (x: represents the letter of your CD-ROM drive).
Issue: During a network install on Vista Ultimate 64-bit, the installation software is
unable to connect the computer to the printer using IPv6 only.
Workaround: In order to connect to the printer in this scenario IPv4 must be disabled on
the host computer or on the printer. IPv4 can be disabled via the printers control panel in
the Network Config. , Network Services menu or in HP ToolboxFX under the Advanced
section of the Network Settings .
Issue: If the printer goes into Auto IP mode it will not return to accepting IP addresses
via DHCP.
Solution: The printer must be turned off and then on again to allow the printer to accept
IP addresses via DHCP.
Issue: During a network installation the installation software is not able to detect the
printer when searching the network.
Solution: The printer and computer are most likely on different subnets. Instead of
allowing the installation software to search the network for the printer, specify the printer
by IP Address or MAC Address in the installation software.
Issue: Installing the HP Color LaserJet CP1518ni may cause the HP ScanJet 4890 to be
unable to scan from the Photosmart Premier software.
Workaround: Reinstall the HP ScanJet 4890 software.
