A big roar for Halloween

Theater, cultural center

concepts released
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun

BRIGIT BAUMA/The Sun

Conrad Evans (also known as Iron Man) lets out a big monster roar during a song at the Haddonfield Public Library Halloween-themed
Little Listeners on Tuesday, Oct. 25. The library had all of its story times filled with songs and stories with a Halloween theme last
week, as well as stations around the library for trick-or-treating. For more photos, please see page 10.

The Boxwood Arts committee

has released conceptual plans
and illustrations for the proposed
theater and cultural center it envisions at the Boxwood Hall property. The property would focus on
preservation as well as cultivation of the arts.
"It will be a place for artists and
art lovers, families and friends,
readers and writers, dancers and
musicians," said Dave Stavetski,
president of Haddonfield Plays &
Players and chair of the Boxwood
Arts executive committee. "(It
will be) a place where everyone
can gather to enjoy the majesty of
the art and the beauty of the setting."
Despite the release of concepts,
Boxwood Arts, as well as borough
commissioners, wanted to make
the public is aware these are just
concepts. The committee is not
ready to move forward, and this is
not a done deal. No total cost
was given.
It is still in the conceptual
phase. We have a preliminary site
please see PROPOSAL, page 20

Parents upset with cancellation

of school Sesame Place safety trip
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
Public comment became heated at the Board of Education
meeting when parents voiced
their displeasure that the fifthgrade trip for school safeties to
Sesame Place was cancelled with
little notice. The trip has been a
tradition for 30 years, according
to resident Teri Kasko.
Kasko said it is not fair the trip
was cancelled for multiple reasons. She said the decision was
made unilaterally; was not communicated to everyone, only the
parents of fifth graders; and was
not fair to the students who put in
all of the hard work being
safeties. Kasko, along with the
others who attended the meeting,
asked that the trip be reinstated.
This is a tradition that has

been going on for 30 some years

when the kids get to kindergarten
all they talk about is the Sesame
Place trip. It is something these
kids work toward. Theyre in the
rain and give up part of their
lunch that is the fundamental
basics of work and reward (the
reward being Sesame Place),
parent and resident Tom Heine
said.
There is also the support of
more than 200 individuals interested in reinstating the trip, according to Kasko, as there is an
online petition. The petition can
be found at www.gopetition.com/
petitions/parents-kids-to-reinstate-the-safety-trip.html. Comments on the petition may be
viewed by clicking the Signatures
tab and selecting the highlighted
word View beside signatures.
All elementary school princi-

pals were in attendance at the

meeting. Reasons stated for the
cancellation of the trip include
safety reasons and the trip being
not inclusive. Central Elementary
School
Principal
Shannon
Simkus said there were safety
concerns in regard to weather, as
there was really no central place
at the park to stay covered, and at
least one child getting separated
from a group each year in the
park. She also said students who
could not be safeties, for various
reasons, felt left out and they
would like for everyone to feel included. The solution was for a
bowling trip and a trip to YMCA
Camp Ockanickon that includes
all fifth-grade students. The
Camp Ockanickon trip would
bring all of the fifth graders toplease see SCHOOL, page 15

Cross country continues dominance

The Haddonfield boys cross
country team continued its streak
of domination at the Colonial
Conference All Star Championship meet Thursday, Oct. 20.
Winning the varsity race was
Haddonfield sophomore Derek
Gess with a time of 15:56. Gess
time is the only sub-16 time on the
Pennypacker course from any
school so far this season. Placing
2 4 in the varsity race were Haddonfield sophomores Griffin
Weiner (16:29) and Greg Eisenhower (16:37), along with senior

Brandon Quanci (16:40). Juniors

Eric Rosenheim of Haddon
Heights and Jimmy MacPherson
of Sterling came in fifth and sixth
place with the same time of 16:41.
The performances of Gess, Weiner, Eisenhower and Quanci automatically qualify them as 2016 All
Star Champions.
In the JV race, an impressive
nine out of the top 10 finishers
were from Haddonfield. Places 1
and 2 went to junior Max Humes
and freshman Martin Riddell
with the same time of 17:25.

Places 3 5 went to senior Derek

Li (17:42), freshmen Andrew Gostovich (17:46) and Stephen Kasko
(18:01).
The All Star Meet not only concluded Colonial Conference competition for the year, it also provided a last chance to race on the
Pennypacker Park course for
most of the seniors. Teams will
now prepare for the State Championship portion of the season,
beginning with the South Jersey
Sectional Championships to be
held at Delsea on Nov. 5.

Special to The Sun

Haddonfield All Star Championship varsity team sophomore Greg

Eisenhower, junior Richie Glennon, sophomore Derek Gess, senior
Brandon Quanci, and sophomores Ethan Spellmeyer, Griffin Weiner
and Sean Campiglia stand with their winning medals.

THE HADDONFIELD SUN NOV. 2-8, 2016

in our opinion

Holiday helpers

108 Kings Highway East

Haddonfield, NJ 08033
856-427-0933

Its the season to help others; let us know about your fundraiser or drive
orry to say this so early, while 60degree days are still upon us,
but, alas, the holiday season is

creeping up quickly!
The good news is that means many
good-hearted people and organizations
will be gathering food, clothing, toys,
money and other items for those less
fortunate.
At The Sun, we want to help make
your event or drive as successful as
possible. But to do that, we need your
help.
Many retailers count on Black Friday to help put their business in the
black for the year. If holiday sales are
strong, they have a good overall year. If
sales are soft, they struggle to get by.
The same theory can hold true for
nonprofits and other groups that de-

The need is there

The need for donations this holiday period
is strong. Tell us about your fundraising
effort or donation drive, and well tell
everyone else.

pend on the publics generosity during

the holiday season to see them through
the rest of the year. People, naturally,
are more giving during this time of the
year. So, in the coming weeks, youll
see bell-ringers, donation drives and a
lot of other efforts to help those in
need.
We salute everyone who holds a
drive to help those in need. But we also
want to help make those efforts as
grand and successful as possible.
To do that, we need to know about

your event as soon as possible (at least

two weeks in advance is best). We need
to know what types of items you are
trying to collect, who will benefit from
the drive and, most importantly, how
people can get involved to help you.
Email is the best way to send us this
information, and youll find our news
email address to the right.
Then, after we get your information,
well take it from there. Well get it into
the paper and on our website and let
everyone in town know what it is you
are trying to accomplish and how they
can be a part of it.
Many families are still struggling
with the economy. There always are
people in need. Let us help you to help
them. Send us your event information
and lets make this a big donation year.

Dont forget to vote this Election Day

Polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 8
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 8.
Haddonfield residents will be able to
vote for the local school board and one municipal referendum question, in addition to
voting for other representatives and the
president of the United States.
The Haddonfield Public Schools Board
of Education election this year is uncontested. Those running for the three open
seats include incumbents Mary E. Fagan,
David C. Siedell and Matt Ritter. Ritter was
chosen to fill the rest of Carlton Chins unexpired term, which ends this year.
Maureen Eyles is running uncontested
for the one-year open seat. Eyles is filling
the unexpired term of Drew Hansen.
The one municipal referendum question

is: Shall the Borough of Haddonfield adopt

an ordinance to continue an Open Space
Trust Fund?
The ballot question will be on continuing a municipal Open Space Trust Fund for
the acquisition of land to protect open
space and water quality for the development of recreation on and maintenance of
any such lands, and for historic
preservation purposes. The current open
space tax levy is set to expire at the end of
2016.
If the question passes, property owners
would continue to be taxed at the rate of
not more than one cent per $100 of assessed
value. If the maximum amount of one cent
were collected, the tax would be $49.14 per
year for the average assessed home of
$491,359.
Having such a fund allows Haddonfield

to apply for double the amount of state

Green Acres Program grants to help purchase open space. For example, Haddonfield could apply for 50 percent of the purchase price of a property rather than 25
percent.
Borough commissioners have the right
to assess the open space tax at less than the
maximum amount each year. Commissioners have never authorized the full assessment. Every year, there would be a public
audit of all expenditures.
Polls are open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.
The polling locations for all 10 districts
are as follows, and there are some changes
in polling locations:
Haddonfield United Methodist Church,
29 Warwick Road, Districts 1 and 5

NOV. 2-8, 2016 THE HADDONFIELD SUN 7

School year may start

a week later for 2017-2018
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
Haddonfield Public Schools
plans to start the 2017-2018 school
year a week later to accommodate
the 2017 summer construction for
bond referendum projects at the
schools.
The Haddonfield Board of Education meeting saw discussion
over the 2017-2018 calendar, as the
calendar would be significantly
different to previous years. A decision on the calendar was not
made that night, as the BOE
wanted public comments before it
was approved.
Rob Notley of New Roads Construction, working on the bond
referendum projects with architect Steve Becica of Becica and

Associates, gave the board an update on where they are and where
they would like to go in regard to
the projects. As of now, things are
on schedule. The hope is to have
all of the construction document
work done by the end of December to be ready to advertise for
bids in January. Bids are planned
to open March 1 and a contract
awarded a few weeks later.
Bigger projects for over the
summer include asbestos abatement, the high school cafeteria
construction and the stadium.
Notley said for the asbestos abatement, no one is allowed to be in
the building other than those
doing the asbestos work. That
precludes construction work
being done on the building. Having an additional week for con-

struction would be a significant

help.
(According to the calendar)
with school starting in 2017 on
Sept. 5, that would be only 11
weeks for construction work
Having the first three weeks for
asbestos abatementThere is
concern if they only have seven
or eight weeks, there is going to
be a lot of second shift work and
costs might go up. In order to be
more responsive to the budget,
having that additional week will
give us more relief on the amount
of second shift work included in
our bid, Notley said.
Superintendent Richard Perry
agreed, saying it is important to
give the construction workers

Camden County
salutes our Veterans
By Freeholder Bill Moen
The Freeholder Board
invites you to join us
for Camden Countys
Veterans Day observance on Nov. 6, at 1
p.m. on Veterans Island
in Cooper River Park.
Each year, hundreds of
veterans and their families gather on Veterans
Island for this annual
tribute.
Veterans Island serves as a lasting testament to Camden Countys Veterans from
all wars, and allows county residents to
reflect on the contributions of the men
and women, past and present, who have
faithfully served our nation.
The island contains six memorial
plaques and meditative areas honoring
Camden County residents killed in World
War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam and
during the Desert Shield/Desert Storm
battle. A sixth section is dedicated to the
Global War on Terror that began with the
attack on the World Trade Center on Sept.
11, 2001. Each memorial area consists of
a paved semi-circle with a plaque, two
benches and landscaping.
The park also features American flags
flanked by service flags flying to honor
veterans of the Army, Navy, Marine
Corps, Air Force, Coast Guard and Merchant Marines. An architectural highlight
is the American Flag Paved Plaza along
the walkway around the perimeter.
The annual Veterans Day observance is
just one of the many programs and services that the Freeholder Boards Office
of Veterans Affairs provides to residents
that served in the military and their family
members. Each year, they also organize
our countys Memorial Day service at
the Camden County Veterans Cemetery,
and the Veterans Prayer Breakfast held in
March.

A call for veterans

Haddonfield American Legion
Post 38 will conduct its annual
Veterans Day service in the Haddonfield Memorial High School
Auditorium on Veterans Day, Friday, Nov. 11. The service will
begin promptly at 11 a.m. and will
last approximately 45 minutes.
Veterans Day is set aside to
thank and honor those who have
served honorably in the military,
during times of war and peace.
Haddonfield American Legion
Post 38 invites all local citizens
and all veterans, soldiers, sailors,
airmen and Marines, whether
serving on active duty, the National Guard or the Reserves, or having served our country in the
past, to attend this service.
Thanks to the support of Superintendent Rich Perry and
Haddonfield Memorial High
School Principal Chuck Klaus,
Post 38 has been able to move the
Veterans Day service from the
War Memorial to the HMHS Auditorium because of past experiences with inclement weather

and the possibility of having

HMHS students attend the service. This year, however, HMHS
will not be in session because of
the NJEA Convention. Nonetheless, Post 38 urges our young people and their families to take an
hour out of their schedule to
honor our veterans on their special day.
The program will include an
opening prayer, the Pledge of Allegiance, a POW-MIA Flag Ceremony, the Star-Spangled Banner, short readings by selected
Post officers and remarks by Post
38 Commander Jeff Bowman and
Mayor Jeff Kasko.
Haddonfield Memorial High
School is located at 401 Kings
Highway East. Visitors should
proceed through the main entrance and through the courtyard
to the double doors and then up
the stairs to the auditorium. For
those who can't use the stairs,
there will be signs directing them
to the elevator. Questions, please
call Tom Baird at (609) 923-1442.

School wanted to be inclusive

SCHOOL
Continued from page 2
gether, creating some team building and a common experience for
all to experience before middle
school.
It was a long and thoughtful
process, Simkus said.
Board President Glenn Moramarco said the inclusive trip
makes it more fair to all students,
being a safety is more like volunteering, rather than work.
Parent and resident Joana McDonnell said she is not giving an
opinion for or against the cancellation of the trip, but she did
want to give an example that she
has experienced in regard to the
Sesame Place trip. Scattergood
said due to health reasons, her
daughter could not be a safety
and wanted to so badly, but could
not. When the trip came around,
McDonnell kept her daughter
home from school that day.
There are some kids that want
to, but for whatever reason,
cant, McDonnell said.
Members of the public speaking on the topic would have liked
the allowance for discussion and

parental input on the decision.

Kasko even suggested a committee be put together to make such
decisions and for decisions to be
communicated.
We can put a group together
to address the issues and fix the
problems so we can continue a
tradition that has been a part of
this community for 30 years and
is valued, Kasko said.
Superintendent Richard Perry
thanked those who came to make

comments and said he will meet

with the principals as an administrative team, review all aspects
of communications and how the
kids feel.
Were going to be meeting as a
team and reaching out and communicating, Perry said.

Winter holiday would not change

WINTER
Continued from page 7
extra time so the opening of
school wouldnt be pushed back
further with little notice. Also, accommodating for the extra week
in advance would allow families
and teachers to plan accordingly.
You have to realize there
could be a lot of surprises with
construction, Perry said.
Notley said the bids will include milestone dates, including a
cushion of two weeks to get work
done before the start of school, so
the schools can get approvals required to open.
According to the 2017-2018 draft

calendar, school will be closed to

students until Sept. 11. School
normally opens the day after
Labor Day. Major changes include
the reduction of fall break from a
week to two days and spring
break from a week to three days.
There are no days off in October.
The Thanksgiving break and winter break would not change, as
well as school being closed on
Martin Luther King Day, Presidents Day and Memorial Day.
The reason for the shortened
(fall and spring) vacations is because we wanted to have a certain
number of academic days between the first day of school and
when national AP testing takes
place, board member Maureen
Eyles said.

According to Eyles, this years

academic calendar has 147 days
between the first day of school
and the first day of AP testing, in
the beginning of May. The 20172018 calendar, with the different
accommodations, also has 147
days between the first day of
school and AP testing.
Perry also assured teachers
will have enough time for professional development through this
calendar as well. However, the
district is working on accommodations for those who need online
professional development or professional development during
their free time.
The board plans to approve the
calendars at its November meeting.

plan. We need to continue to find

operating partners and donors, as
well as work with the town and
preservationists to make sure all
of the pieces are together, Stavetski said.
I think that there are people
out there who think this is a done
deal, and it is far from it. They
will have to go through the full
process, Commissioner John
Moscatelli said at last weeks
commissioners meeting.
The full process Moscatelli was
speaking of includes going
through the various boards of the
borough, such as the Historic
Preservation Committee, the Zoning Board and the Planning
Board, as well as allowing time
for public comment. Moscatelli
said the property is zoned R2 with
an R0 overlay, a single-family residence with office district overlay,
so an arts center is not a complying use.
There is plenty of work to be
done. We are in the conceptual
phase; (we are) getting the material we need to go before the
boards, Stavetski said.
Commissioners said they will
work on a public statement about
the options of the Boxwood Hall
property, as per resident Kim
Custers request during public
comment at the meeting, saying
there is some information that
could be misleading.
The concept for the campus includes four main elements:
Boxwood Hall would become
gallery space for the Markeim
Arts Center and administrative
offices.
The Sun was given the opportunity to tour the inside of the
building. Filled with spacious
rooms and hallways often connecting each room to the other,

the committee showed examples
of how the space could be used
for exhibitions.
Historic Boxwood Hall, built as
a residence by John Estaugh Hopkins in 1799, would be completely
renovated, and parts will be restored in compliance with preservation guidelines. The executive
committee plans to retain a noted
historic preservation architect to
assist with these aspects of the
project. The building will be
retrofitted with energy-efficient
lighting and modern heating and
cooling systems.
A 365-seat theater would be a
first-class venue for Haddonfield
Plays & Players, speaker series,
musical performances, dance,
film and other cultural events.
The theater would be a new building behind the house, including
orchestra, mezzanine and balcony seating. The stage will feature an orchestra pit, theater rigging and a projection system for
film screening.
The house behind Boxwood
Hall would come down to put in
the new arts center.
Stavetski said the house is not
historical, and the committee has
been in touch with those renting
the house from the borough, and
they would be given plenty of
time to relocate.
A glass-walled lobby between
the art gallery and the theater
will create an open and airy connection, filled with natural light

and affording views of the

grounds beyond.
Below the theater would be a
4,000-square-foot
competitionquality dance floor with 16-foot
ceilings for Dance Haddonfield
and a catering kitchen, as well as
a social space with seating. The
space would serve many community uses.
The woods at the rear of the
property would be conserved and
kept accessible to the public for
cultural and educational purposes.
Multiple professionals have
been brought on to the project, including Anthony Iovino of Acari
+ Iovino Architects, who designed the recent renovations at
the library; Alysse Einbender, a
landscape architect and design
consultant who serves on the Advisory Board for Accessibility of
MossRehab; and Graham Alexander, a Broadway performer,
recording artist and sound designer to ensure Boxwood Arts
has superior technical and
acoustical qualities.
In developing the concept for
the campus, the committee was
guided by Mitch Gorshin, a former Disney Imagineer who now
owns Gorshin Trading Post in
Haddonfield. Gorshin has an extensive national portfolio that includes creative oversight for the
National Liberty Museum in
Philadelphia, Marriott and Revel
Casino in Atlantic City.
