RELATIVE SENTENCES: PRACTICE

1. The book was a detective story. I was reading it yesterday.


2. The man is my English teacher. You spoke to him in the street.
3. There is the lady. Her wallet has been stolen.

RELATIVE CLAUSES: GRAMMAR


1) Introduction:
The cat antecedent [ which relative pronoun robbed the fish ] was my cousin's.
2) Relative pronouns / adverbs:
WHO:

The woman who came to see us was selling magazines.

WHOM: Where is that nurse who(m) I saw last time?


WHICH: I want some plates which can go in the microwave.
THAT:

The police haven't found the man who stole my car.


I've lost that nice ring which Bill gave me.

WHOSE: A good builder is one whose houses don't fall down.


WHERE: Do you know a shop where I can find sandals?
WHEN:

I'll never forget the day when I first met her.

WHY:

She doesn't know (the reason) why she killed him.

* Restrictions:
a) that vs who / which
- His book is the best that I've ever read.
- H's the most intelligent man that I've ever met.
b) who vs that
- Do you know the people who were with Jim?
- Those who want to come will have to pay for their own tickets.
c) that vs what
- She will give me everything that I need.
d) which vs what/ that
- They say that I am selfish, which is not true.
3) Types of relative clauses :
a) Defining: All the sharks which were white were caught. (only the white ones)
b) Non -Defining: All the sharks, which were white, were caught. ( all of them were white)
