Interactive Petrophysics Version 3.3

Update Notes
System Resources
Minimum suggested system resources to run Interactive Petrophysics (IP) are:
2.6 GHz Pentium 4 processor (or equivalent), 500 MB RAM.
Operating System: Windows NT, 2000, XP
For work with core photographs or image logs, a minimum of 1GB RAM is
recommended.

Installation
IP Database Format
The IP database has changed between versions 3.2 and 3.3 and while version 3.3 will
read a 3.2 database, version 3.2 will not read a 3.3 database. Any 3.2 database will
be converted to a 3.3 compatible format the first time the program saves data into a
well data file.
It is not necessary to un-install an older version of IP before loading version 3.3,
The latest version will default to a folder called \Program Files\IntPetro33 on the PC
hard disk. It is recommended that you install Version 3.3 to this new folder if you would
like to keep your existing version 3.2 intact.
When installing version 3.3 please log on as the System Administrator. The install
program needs to register some DLLs and install the Microsoft .Net Framework
which may be prohibited by the operating system for certain user logons. The Install
process should warn you if you do not have Administrator Rights on your computer.
Microsoft .NET Framework
When starting the install process, you will be asked whether you want to optionally
install the Microsoft .Net Framework if it is not already installed on your PC. This is
now a requirement for IP and you should answer Yes to this question.
Microsoft DirectX V9c
DirectX 9c with Managed Components is now required for the IP Map View display
and 3D Image Viewer modules. The install will prompt you install DirectX components
if DirectX is not detected on your computer. If you choose to install DirectX 9c it will be
installed on your PC during the Installation process. If you choose not to install DirectX
at this time you can manually run the DXSETUP.exe from the C:\Program
Files\IntPetro\DirectX9 folder and also run MDXredist.msi from the same folder.

Security System
IP version 3.3 will not work with the Copy Control (CC) security system
(Customer IDs start with letters BU). If you are currently using this system you will
need to contact your local Schlumberger account representative to obtain a new
license for the IP Proprietary (IP) system.
The security system will not be altered by the installation of IP version 3.3. The
security system is in the IPSec.dat license file, so if it is planned to remove the existing
IP installation do not delete the IPSec.dat license file or move it. If you wish, you
can transfer the protection system back to the Internet website, un-install IP version
3.2, then install IP version 3.3 and re-install the security system back from the website
(keep track of your customer ID number, since this will be needed to re-install the
security system).
IP version 3.3 will, by default, install to a different directory to the previous 3.2
installation (C:\program Files\IntPetro33). When IP version 3.3 is started for the first
time, you must click the Install Security button, select the Connect to a working
Network protection system and then point the Protection directory to the old IP
installation directory which contains the license file.
If you install IP Version 3.3 into the IP Version 3.2 directory, and you have changed the
curve defaults file Cparmdef.par or the crossplot overlay file Overlay_Files.ovl
while using version 3.2, these files should be saved under new names before installing
the new version, otherwise they will be overwritten by the version 3.3 files. Changes
that the user has made to the existing files can then be applied to the new files.

New Modules / Functionality

'Water Saturation versus Height 'Modelling
This suite of tools consists of 4 modules. These are 'multi-well' modules that allow the
calculation of Water Saturation versus Height functions from both capillary pressure
data and log curve data.
Module 1 is a capillary pressure QC and correction module.
Module 2 allows the creation of capillary pressure functions from the corrected,
QC'ed core plug data. Multiple functions can be created and several different
types of equations (including J functions) are available. Curve fitting allows the
use of non-linear equations including Lambda functions, hyperboles and
exponential.
Module 3 allows the creation of Water Saturation versus height functions from
log data. Several methods are available including 'FOIL' (BVW = f(h)), 'RQI'
(Rock Quality Index)
functions. Multiple functions can be created and
discriminators applied to select the data that goes into the functions.
Module 4 applies the functions created in Modules 2 and 3 on a field wide basis.
Functions can be used to search for best fit Free Water Level's (FWL).
Functions can be applied to multiple reservoirs with different FWL's. A
calibration method is available to fit capillary pressure functions to log Sw's
where there is some doubt about reservoir Interfacial tensions and contact
angles.
Horizontal Log Plot
The Horizontal Log Plot allows you to display log plots in 'Landscape' orientation,
rather than in the conventional, vertical 'Portrait' orientation. This allows users with
multiple PC monitors to see more of their well logs on-screen. The majority of the Log
Plot interactivity, in terms of log track layout and log curve display set-up is maintained
in the new visualization, However, interactive curve editing is not supported in this plot
orientation. Curve splicing and depth shifting must be performed in the 'portrait' view.
Interactive Log Plots, launched by the IP Interpretation modules, can also be reoriented and the familiar interactive Cut-off lines and Parameter lines function as
normal. Interactive crossplots and histograms can also be launched from the new plot.
IP User Forum
The 'IP User Forum', launched from the 'Help' menu list, provides registration and
access to PGL's 'Interactive Petrophysics' User Forum. This web forum provides
users with a resource for discussion of topics relating to IP and Petrophysics in
general; to enable users to share ideas, user programs, workflows that may be of use
to the ever-expanding IP-user community.
Edit Multi-Well Header Information
This module allows the user to apply 'global' changes to the 'cultural data' in a userdefined well list. For example, one could set up filters to select the 'Field' or the
'Company', 'Country' data fields and apply a common value or text string to an entry
box in multiple wells.
Real-Time Data Loading
Real-time data streaming via a WITSML link has been added to the 'input', data
loading functionality in IP. The module uses a Schlumberger connection interface to

locate and link to a remote data source (user name and password required) over an
internet connection. Incoming data is 'mapped' to an IP curve or multiple curves. The
IP 'Batch Operation' can be run periodically, calling the interpretation modules, to
perform a real-time log analysis, using user-defined petrophysical parameter sets.

'Montage Builder' Tool

The 'Montage Builder' tool is a stand-alone application, shipped with Interactive
Petrophysics V3.3, which provides the user with an application within which to compile
log plots, Crossplots, Map views, Correlation Panels and histograms on one 'drawing
board'. The user can add text strings and borders, set graphic file positions and
dimensions, import and retain vertical scales for the log plots. The user can also
attach a Title block and Logo files.
Setting & Saving Well and Logging Attributes
IP users can now interactively set up, edit and save 'Well' and external 'Log' file
header parameters, which can be 'mapped' to dynamic IP program 'attributes'. 'Well
attributes' and 'Log attributes' are saved to the IntPetro.config file. This means, for
example, when loading LAS, DLIS or LIS formatted files, that the mnemonics for log
file header parameters (CNT, COUNTRY, CNTR) can be linked to existing IP
parameters by 'mapping' the external mnemonics to the internal IP attribute name.
Log Attributes including Mud-, mud cake- and mud filtrate resistivities and their
associated temperatures; Mud Viscosity / Density etc..., for up to 25 log runs can have
their attributes saved within IP. The user can select the 'default' parameters to apply
to an interpretation.
Well 'cultural' attributes including things like 'Company Name', 'Latitude', 'Longitude',
'Quadrant' ,'Block', can be set up and used to save data into the IP database.
External Database Connections can be configured and saved for future use to the IP
Configuration file.
Default' settings for whether the Database Browser opens when IP is launched or for
the reporting level of the IP Message Board are set here.
Load Well Attributes
The 'Load Well Attributes' module provides the user with an interface which can be
used to load 'cultural' data to a multi-well IP project from an external text file or
spreadsheet.
The interface will load data such as 'Company', 'Well Spud Date', 'Well Completion
Date, 'Well Completion Status', 'Field', 'Location', 'Unique Well Identifier (UWI)', 'UTM
Northing' / 'Easting' / 'UTM Zone' , 'Well Bottom Depth' either to multiple in-memory
wells within an IP Project or to newly-created IP wells, at the click of a button.
The module automatically 'maps' the 'Well Name' in the external file to the identical IP
Well Name data field if the IP database well is loaded in memory.
The external files to be imported can include space-, tab-, comma- delimited text or an
Excel spreadsheet 'selection' which can be cut/pasted into the interface.
The user can choose either: to overwrite cultural data in existing IP wells with data
from the external file or only to update those 'blank' header fields that are 'mapped' in
the import screen.

Interactive Depth Shift

The 'Interactive Depth Shift' module now includes an auto-correlator which can be
used to set up a correlation 'window' over which a curves can be depth matched
against a 'reference' log curve. The auto-correlator utility is launched from the
Interactive Depth Shift modules log plot, by right-mouse-button clicking in a depth-shift
log track.
'Take Notes'
The 'Take Notes' feature, in the 'Well' menu provides the user with a convenient note
pad, a simple text editor, that can be used to record workflow steps, comments about
an interpretation, log curve issues, user formulae etc.. that are then saved to a text file
in a wells sub-folder within the IP project.
Schlumberger Log Environmental Corrections
The NPHI to TNPH Conversion nomograph (Chart Por-14e) has been incorporated
into the Schlumberger Log Environmental Corrections module.

Enhancements
The following modifications / enhancements have been implemented in Version 3.3:
Licensing
IP no longer supports 2 parallel licensing systems. The 'CC' (CopyControl) licensing
system, with Customer ID numbers prefixed with 'BU', has been discontinued.
Customers on this type of license will be migrated to the 'IP' (IP Proprietary) licensing
mechanism when they upgrade to IP Version 3.3.
Project Directory & Individual Well Subdirectory Naming Conventions
IP Database folders are now 'flagged' as such in WINDOWS Explorer view. Each
database folder icon is labelled with the initials 'IP'.
Well sub-directories in a multi-well database now include the well name in the
subdirectory title, appended to the 'Well000x' label, making it much easier to make the
association of Folder name to database well name.
Well Names and Database Numbers
In earlier versions of IP, wells were listed with 2 numbers associated with each well;
the 'In-Memory' number and the 'Database Well Number' in the following convention
'2:(13) Test Well 1', Where the first number was the 'In-Memory' number followed by
the 'Database well Number' in brackets. In IP Version 3.3 and later, the 'In-Memory'
number has been dropped. Now only the 'Database Well Number' is displayed along
with the Well Name. New wells, created in IP but not yet saved to the database, will
have 'Negative' database numbers, for example '(-2) Test Well 2', until they are saved
to the IP database.
Data Loading
Interval Loader - One can load core analysis (Porosity, Permeability, Grain Density)
data or Capillary Pressure (Pc) and Water Saturation data from a spreadsheet source
into array curves in IP. This enhancement streamlines the existing workflow which
previously involved two different IP modules. The Copy/paste capability from a
spreadsheet into the IP interval Loader interface makes this operation much quicker to
perform.
ASCII Loader functionality has also been enhanced to allow the loading of Array data
into IP. This has primarily been done to facilitate the loading of capillary pressure
data, but can also be used to load core analysis curves as arrays when the data is
supplied in formatted text files.
Data Loading Conversions
When data is loaded (from LAS LIS etc) if curve 'type' is Neutron, Density, Sonic or
Caliper then the units of the input curves are checked and, if not found to be
'standard' units, the user is prompted to convert to standard units. Standard units are
set in the 'Tools' menu - 'Set Default Units' tab. For example, sonic logs loaded in
uSec/m will get converted to uSec/ft etc etc. This is the same functionality as was
used for the Neutron (conversion from % to decimals) but is now extended to include
other input curves.

Parameter Screens
An option now exists to include the zone name on all tabs rather than just the first,
'Zone Depths' tab. This is set either by 'checking' a box in the bottom right corner of
the parameter screen, or by clicking the top left hand (Zone) cell and selecting the
option from the pop-up menu. The main interpretation module parameter windows
have both options. Special parameters windows included in other forms like
'MultiMin' or 'Userprograms' etc have this option set from the top left corner cell
option only.
Porosity / Water Saturation Module
Shading between the Density and Neutron porosity curves has been added to the
interactive log plot.
A Gamma Ray 'correlation' curve track has been added to the interactive log plot.
The gamma ray curve is added in the same track as the bad hole logic curve.
Three new calculation Limits have been added to the 'Limits / Badhole logic'
parameters:
'Phi-Sw Limit': when Phie < Limit, Sw, Swt etc = 1.0
'Phie Limit': When Phie < Limit, Phie = .0001, Sw, Swt etc = 1.0
'Vcl Limit': When Vwetclay > Limit, Phie = .0001, Sw, Swt etc = 1.0
A new curve, 'Rw at formation temperature', can be specified as an optional
'output curve' from the module.
A new curve, 'Density of fluid in the flushed zone' can be specified as an optional
'output curve' from the module. Where 'density of fluid in the flushed zone' =
RhoFiltrate * Sxo + (1-Sxo) * RhoHyd. Where 'RhoHyd' is the apparent hydrocarbon
density as seen by the density tool i.e. electron density.
Rxo Pickett plot. Interactive Phie / Rxo and PhiT/Rxo crossplots can be launched from
the interactive plot. Interactive points now contain Rmf instead of Rw.
Cutoff and Summation Module
A Gamma Ray 'correlation' curve track has been added to the interactive log plot.
Saving Wells to the IP Database
The user is now offered the choice of either allocating the 'Database Number' of the
WellXXXX.dat binary file for a new well that is saved to the database or, taking the IP
'default' number.
Well Menu
The 'Well' menu has been modified to make it easier to distinguish between 'Single
well' management tools and 'Multi-well' management tools. The Multi-well
management tools are now located on a sub-menu of the 'Well' menu.
Log Plot
'Crosshairs' are now visible on a log plot, using left-mouse-button 'click and hold' on
log plot display to allow the user to quickly evaluate log depth alignment or log
baseline values.
The Color palette has been extended to allow the user a greater choice of log curve
display colors.
An option has been added to include the log Track header 'names/numbers' on output
to printers or to graphics files.
Depth numbers can be resized and rotated.
Version 3.3 August 2006

Page 7 / 9

Numeric data can be resized and rotated.

Track scales can be removed from hardcopy.
Track header background colours can be set.
Depth 'tick' lines can now be set.
Log Plot format files loaded from disk are now loaded with all the curve names from
the original log display included in the track headers, even if a curve does not exist in
the active well. When you edit the properties of a log track, you may be prompted that
a curve does not exist, 'OK to continue ?'. Simply click the 'Yes' button to continue.
When new curves are computed, using the interpretation & calculation modules, the
log plot will pick up and display the new curves of the correct curve 'Type'.
Output plot to disk file will be at the resolution set on the 'Advanced' tab.
An option to preview the output graphics file in the file-type standard WINDOWS
viewer is displayed after each graphics file is created.
A vertical scale of 1:1200 has been added to the default list.

Multi-Well Log Plot

Clicking on the well name at the top of a plot now allows the 'Edit Format' option in
the pop-up menu.
The width of track borders can be set for all wells from the 'Options' menu.
On the 'Settings' window, under the 'Zones' tab, there is an option to turn on / off the
zone name which gets displayed on the top of each correlation line.
Hardcopy output now allows the well name to be displayed directly above the scales
rather than at the top of the page. This option is located under the 'Advanced' tab.
Crossplot
An 'Apply' button has been added to the 'Edit Format' dialog so that user does not
have to repeatedly open and close the 'Edit Format' window to see the results of a
change to the crossplot scales, input curves, Parameter Set or point display symbols.
Simply make changes to the crossplot attributes and click 'Apply' to see new set-up in
the graphic window.
When a crossplot is launched and a log plot for the active well is on-screen - if you
move the mouse cursor over the log plot window, a circle, visible on the crossplot
display, tracks the mouse cursor movement. The X /Y values of the curves in the
crossplot update as the mouse is moved. The circle disappears when the cursor is
moved back over a crossplot window. The circle is visible, simultaneously, on as
many crossplots as you have open for the active well.
Histogram
An 'Apply' button has been added to the 'Edit Format' dialog. The Histogram tool
output graphics files have been enhanced to include a listing of any discriminators
(curves or values) that have been applied in the set-up of the histogram.
When a histogram is launched and a log plot for the active well is on-screen - if you
move the mouse cursor over the log plot window, a small light blue bar, visible on the
histogram display, tracks the mouse cursor movement. The histogram curve value
updates as the mouse is moved. The bar disappears when the cursor is moved back
over the histogram window. The bar is visible, simultaneously, on as many histograms
as you have open for the active well.

Printers
Printer dialogs have been added to the 'Crossplot' and 'Histogram' modules 'File'
menus, instead of the program defaulting to the current printer, to allow the user to
choose which printer to send output to.
Editing Zone / Tops Sets
Zone / Tops Sets can now be edited from a log plot 'Zone' track by right-mouse-button
clicking in the Zone track and selecting the 'Edit Zone' option. This opens the 'Edit
Zones / Tops' module, with the appropriate Tops Set loaded into the interface. If an
'interpretation module' Zone Set is selected, you can only edit Zone color in this way.
You must edit interpretation Zone Sets from within the appropriate IP module. Zone
colors have been extended with a more comprehensive color palette now available in
IP.
Clicking in the 'Zone Top' or 'Zone Bottom' column headers will now allow the column
to be cleared. By clearing the 'Zone Bottom' column the zone bottoms will be
automatically set to the top of the next zone.
Statistical Curve Prediction
The build and run model intervals can now be selected from zone tops.
Curve Filter
The user can now specify the depth interval over which to filter an input curve either as
a depth range (in feet or meters) or in depth steps.
Rock Physics - Fluid Substitution
Pressure, temperature and fluid densities used to calculate 'Flushed', 'Reservoir' and
'Substitution' zone properties are saved into the Fluid Substitution parameter set.
