The outcome of the operation

Our meeting this month was at the Four

were very happy with the new venue.
Unfortunately our speaker was unable to
attend due to illness so they have
arranged another date next year. Those
members present discussed some
business matters and it was also decided
to have our Christmas Lunch at the Four
Horseshoes on Monday 5th December.
The meal will be 2 courses and the
members who have paid their full year

subscriptions will have the meal paid from

come will pay the full amount. The menu
choice to be made at the next meeting.
The meeting ended with tea and biscuits
followed by a raffle.

Prayer Points for November

Loving God, as we remember those who

have died in wars, particularly those who
died in the Somme offensive of 100 years
ago. We think of those who face possible
death in Syria, grant us faith to live with
things about which we feel uncertain.
Sometimes we find it hard to see your hand
at work and so help us to make sense of
the events around us. We see so much that
challenges us and seems to contradict our
faith so that at times, despite ourselves, our
trust is undermined and our confidence
shaken. Help us to hold on to you as you
hold on to us. Teach us that doubts and
questions are part of faith, and that you are
able to lead us to new insights. Teach us to

Pray for our priest Stephen and his wife

Lorna as he recovers from his sudden
illness. We ask for a complete recovery,
and that their families will be a great
support to them at this difficult time.
Give thanks for the Womens Breakfast
which happened this month and for the
Mens Breakfast that happens in November
may they be times of
fellowship and
understanding of your purpose in the lives
for all who attend.
Pray for our own country at this time of
anxieties and worries, for those who are
uncertain of what the future holds for them
and those faced with difficult decisions to
make.

Stratfield Saye Parish Council Report

The last Parish Council meeting was held
on 3rd October 2016.
Broadband was again a hot topic with little
progress due to the costs involved in any
provider bringing fibre to the premises.
Unfortunately at present Gigaclear report it
is not economically viable. Cllr Pearson
continues to actively campaign for
improvements and reported that it was an
issue at the recent BDAPTC meeting where
various solutions were discussed including
a suggestion for Rural Rates relief for
houses receiving insufficient broadband
coverage. He will write to Andy Dowling,
BDBC, listing the problems in relation to
Stratfield Sayes coverage.
A new bench will be installed at West End
Green with a dedication to the late Duke of
Wellington but the placement of the VC
plaque commemorating Mr Welchs award
of a VC in WW1 is still undecided. So the
Parish Council would be happy to receive
any ideas on where it could best be placed.
The Parish Council received an update from
a representative of the Committee of local
residents who are continuing to fund raise in
order to purchase playground equipment for
the Parish. They are planning more events
as the total needed to purchase equipment
and provide for its maintenance is quite
significant.
It was noted that the Rail Track consultation
is out re the closure of the Bramley level
crossing and all present were encouraged

to look and register any concerns they may

have especially its effects on the small rural
roads in the Parish.
Cllr Tucker informed the Parish Council of 2
items that could interest local residents: a
briefing report on improvements to the A33,
which includes new roundabouts, and the
BDBC register of people who wish to
access affordable housing in the Borough
anyone interested should contact BDBC to
be added to the register.
A problem was reported with the new gate
installed on the Bridleway near the
Fisheries behind the Wellington Arms as it
is too narrow for access by horses.
The next Parish meeting is on 6th December
(setting of the precept for 2017/8) in the
Village Hall but dont forget the monthly
coffee morning on Mondays 7th November &
5th December - do come along for a chat
and some delicious cakes made by one of
our regulars as it is always an enjoyable get
together for local residents and is a great
opportunity to raise any concerns you may
have.
We are also hoping to hold another preChristmas buffet like last year which
everyone enjoyed so much on either
Wednesday 7th or 14th December so please
try to come along and check in the
December edition to see which date has
been chosen singing is optional!!!!!!!

Bramley Church of England School

With summer fast becoming a distant
memory, the pupils and staff at Bramley
Church of England embrace the Autumn
Term with great excitement. Our youngest
pupils have settled into school life quickly.
A great enthusiastic buzz for learning can
be seen running throughout the reception
classes.
Is your child due to start school next
September?
If so, we would like to invite you to our
open morning on Wednesday 2nd
November at 9.30am. At this meeting you
will be able to get a real flavour of our
Good school in operation. Mr Golding
(Headteacher) will talk about the aims and
goals we have for your children, how we
help them to achieve these and how we
support you and your children in joining
our school. Mrs Biffen (Head of EYFS) will
talk about the transition arrangements for
children starting school. There will be an
opportunity to talk to current Year R
parents, School Governors and taste some
of our lovely school food. If you are unable
to make this date, individual appointments
can be made on request. We look forward
to welcoming you to our school.

Recently, we enjoyed our Harvest service

in school. It gave us opportunity to think
about how fortunate we are and to give
thanks for the many things we sometimes
take for granted. We would like to thank all
parents who sent in kind donations,
Reverend Lenton for sharing prayers, The
Bramley Bakery for providing us with
delicious bread to share, Mr Smart for
making bread in EYFS and the Year 4
children for leading such a well organised

service.
Our more experienced pupils have been
benefitting from a wide range of rich and
valuable learning experiences. You may
have seen our year 6 children out and
about around the village completing the
Bike-a-bility course. As well as enhancing
their skills on the bike, they have also
gained vital knowledge on road safety and
ensuring their equipment is roadworthy.
You may have noticed that the village was
quieter for three days at the end of
September. We took over fifty Year 5
pupils away on the annual residential to
Calshot Activity Centre. It was a fantastic
few days where the children got to
experience everything from skiing to
orienteering. We all returned having
conquered challenges with new
friendships, huge smiles and a good-sized
bag of washing!
Lastly, thank you to all of the parents and
grandparents who attended our Year 2
outcome event. The pupils shared their
work from this term where they have been
comparing their childhood to that of their
grandparents. The afternoon finished with
a friendly debate and vote about who had
the best childhood.
There are lots of exciting challenges, rich
learning opportunities and community
events on the horizon including the Year 6
residential to Osmington Bay, Bramley C
of E Primary Fireworks Night and our
Junior Road Safety Officers have a
competition coming up.

Do you have a physical disability and think

you would benefit from a supported group
holiday in Spain in a safe and comfortable
environment?
Are you fit, healthy and looking for a
challenge?
One unique organisation in Hampshire may
be if interest.
ICE (Integration - Communication - and
Education) is a charitable organisation
offering holidays for the physically disabled
and their families/spouses overseas. Carers/
Helpers and
equipment are
provided as
required as well as
transport to and
from the airport.
Each holiday also
includes at least 2
sight-seeing trips. ICE was started in the
early 80s with the purpose of raising funds to
buy equipment for the disabled. Then one
year they raised enough funds to take a
JUMBULANCE abroad. After that Terry
Thornhill owner of Toucan Travel (local
travel agent chain) came on board and
arranged and led the holidays until 2015.
I have been a helper on ICE holidays since
2013. Last year I was asked to take over as
Holiday Organiser/Leader for the 2016
holiday.
I successfully lead the group 2016 holiday to
Toremolinos this May and I am currently very
busy organising the 2017 holiday to La
Pineda in Spain. We will depart on 14 May
2017 for 10 day at The Hotel Palas

A Brief History of the Allotment

For many of us, awareness of allotments is
based images of the Dig for Victory
campaign during the Second World War
and images of blokes in flat caps and hob
nailed boots double-digging with ancient
spades. But did you know that the idea of
an allotment for
growing food has
been around for
hundreds of years?
The enclosure of
common land,
which had started
back in Norman
times (and
accelerated in the
18th century under
new laws), led to
the provision of
land or an allotment - for the now

In the 19th century, many of these country

"degeneracy", allotments were considered

to provide an alternative to drink and other
unworthy pursuits for the poor. The spread
of urban allotments was intensified by the

growth of high-density housing in the form

of back-to-back housing, normally without
gardens. In 1887 the Allotments Act made
it possible for local authorities to acquire
land for allotments. It also made it
compulsory for local authorities to provide
allotments where there was demand for
them.
During the 1930s, the Quaker Society of
Friends set up a scheme to help
unemployed men to grow their own. The
scheme was very successful and briefly

adopted by the Government who saw
an urban allotment was born. Encouraged

the traditional vegetable plot into leisure
gardens.
However,
the
decline
continued and by 1997 plot numbers
were down to 265,000, with 44,000 of
those listed as vacant. Many more were
left uncultivated.
Fortunately, this decline has now halted

Allotments played a crucial role in WW2
and became a common feature in towns
and cities even Kensington Gardens had
its own plots. Food production from
allotments generated 1.3m tons per year
from 1.4m plots - nearly a ton of food per
plot.
By the 1960s the number of plots had fallen
to around 500,000. Rationing was over, and
mass produced food had become cheap
and readily available. Lives were busier and
the whole idea of growing your own food fell
out of fashion. In addition, a population

Sherfield Park Over 55s

The Sherfield Park Over 55's are a social
group meeting at the Sherfield Park Community Centre. Made up of those of us of a
certain age, the group routinely meets
Tuesday mornings at 10AM for coffee and a
chat; nothing formal, but a lot of fun. And
every now and then we add afternoon sessions of pub lunches, 'Scategories' or
Scrabble. But 20 September was anything
but routine. A very generous grant from the
Loddon Valley Link enabled us to rent a bus
and descend on Portsmouth for a day trip
that included a fair
share of sightseeing,
eating, drinking and,
of course, shopping.
With no problems associated with driving
we all could relax and
enjoy Portsmouth and
the day. Thank you,

Keep up with your Parish Council on our

new website:
www.sherfieldparkparishcouncil.gov.uk You
can find breaking news, councillor
biographies and an archive of important
documents here. Were starting with a basic
site, and hope to improve steadily. Let us
know what youd like to see.
The fight for superfast broadband is
gaining speed. After discovering that there
were no plans to hook up cabinet 16
(serving the back third of the parish closest
to Cufaude Lade) the community agreed to
back a fund raising effort to do it ourselves.
We now have a Community Interest
Company (CIC) led by resident Quintin
Alvares that will raise the cash. The
Borough Council, impressed by the
communitys efforts, has stated a desire to
contribute to our funding. Theyll confirm
their intent and set the amount at their
meeting in November. Meanwhile, the CIC
is working to collect phone numbers of
everyone in the effected area, which theyll
use to register interest with our
representative at BT Openreach. We can
then get a firm price for connection. Once
we raise the money and commission the
connection, it will take about eight months.

National Women's Register

Light Up Sherfield Park returns this year,

giving you an opportunity to pick a favourite
from amongst your neighbours holiday
decorations. Were collecting some great
prizes, including a 100 voucher for the
Wyevale Garden Centre across the A33. So
start planning your lighting schemes! You
dont need to register this year; residents
can vote for any house they like. Watch for
details through your post box, and on
Facebook or the website. Your Council is
also working to get the tree at the Gaiger
Avenue roundabout lit for the holiday
season. Sherfield Park-based company
Your Next Move has volunteered to
sponsor the lighting; we just need to get the
various official permissions sorted.
Our first Community Speedwatchers have
been trained and you may soon see them
along Rockbourne Road trying to reduce
speed. With the full support of local police,
these volunteers (identifiable by their high
vis jackets) will stand by the road with a
Speed Indicator Display (SID). They report
the details of any drivers exceeding the
limit, allowing the police to send warning
letters. Repeat offenders may receive a
personal visit from the police. The more
volunteers we have, the more often we can
patrol. If youd like to help, contact

Vandalism at the Sherfield on Loddon Sports Ground

Damage by vandalism has been taking place
on the sports pavilion belonging to the Junior
Club. Guttering and and down drainage pipes
have been smashed and the wooden
staircase at the end of the building broken
away from the wall. The support post for the
staircase was thrown up on the roof. Damage
was also done to the front facing and the
external light fitting. The crime has been
reported to the Hampshire Police. Our thanks

Fred Bernsten, Secretary Loddon Sports Club

We held our annual Wine, Women and

Song evening in October, always a
popular event. As our theme for this year
was to do with Relativity, we started with a
short quiz which involved identifying music
from short tracks. Each piece reflected the
components of Relativity: light, speed and
sound. One piece was Light My Fire by
The Doors and another was Turn Your
Lights Down Low by Bob Marley. We then
each chose three pieces of music which
had a connection with our relatives. Most
chose pieces which linked to their parents
and as usual there was a wide range, from
classical to rock/pop, from folk to jazz. A
jazz piece chosen by two people was
Petite Fleur performed by Chris Barbers
Jazz Band in 1959. One member said that
it was played at her fathers funeral as jazz
was one of his loves. Another member said
that she remembered marching with her
father when she was a little girl to We are
the soldiers of the Queen my lad and this
we listened to played by the Marine
Guards. Someone
else said that she
recalled Great Balls
of Fire by Jerry Lee
Lewis being played
when she first met
her husband at a
dance hall. A
daughters wedding was remembered by
listening to Purcells Trumpet Tune and Air,
a great rousing piece. Feet were tapping to
Mr Blue Sky by the ELO and The Lord of
the Dance by The Dubliners. Eleanor
Rigby was played by the Royal
Philharmonic Orchestra, deemed good
music by a father who disapproved of The
Beatles! Somebody remembered the
music played for the first dance at her
wedding over 40 years ago Weve only
just begun by The Carpenters and we all
enjoyed listening to it again. We then
heard how an uncle had his own dance
band in the 1930s/40s and were shown
photos of him in his heyday. One of the

Great
Balls of
Fire

numbers
he used
to play
was
Whispering, but as there were no
recordings of him playing it, we listened to
Tommy Dorsey. Other artists included
Elvis, Val Doonican, Frank Sinatra, John
Lennon, Cat Stevens (Morning has broken
of course!), Don McLean, GunsnRoses,
Coldplay and the Beach Boys. Quite a
diverse assortment and some classical
pieces included Bolero by Ravel, Stabat
Mater by Rossini and the Pearl Fisher Duet
by Bizet. Of course we couldnt omit

Dancing Queen by Abba! Somehow we

manage to include this whatever the theme!
A lovely evening of nostalgia!
Our next meeting is about Mind Games
(crosswords, sudoku etc.) and we also
have our annual telephone quiz..
