PUBLIC ATTITUDES TOWARDS IMMIGRATION IN IRELAND
According to Immigration and Residence in Ireland, a Government document
published in 2005, In the last five years over 100,000 persons from outside the European
Economic Area have been admitted to the state for employment purposes.
The study confirms that public attitudes to immigrants vary depending on age group
and social class. In general, younger people and those from a higher income group are more
accepting of immigrants and of the changes in society which inevitably follow from the
relatively large-scale immigration that Ireland has been experiencing for several years now.
The analysis also suggests that those who have more direct contact with immigrants are less
likely to feel threatened by immigration.
The fact that 80% of respondents agree that it is good that children in Ireland are
growing up in a multicultural society is encouraging because the new multicoloured Ireland
is here to stay. However, there are very few people who see it as good to have immigrants
living in their community and many are uncomfortable with intermarriage.
The challenge is now to deal with the fears that some people have and to commit as a
society to encouraging the integration of those immigrants who are part of our ever changing
country.
