Reflective History Statement
According to the history-social science framework educators must be well rounded in
order to prepare students for the fast changing society we live in. An educator must know how to
present knowledge that relates to society in a stimulating way. For example, teachers must be
aware of what knowledge an active society member should know in order to be an effective
member. In addition, she or he must have a classroom in which students are able to practice the
actions of a member of society, such as being respectful, responsible, and realizing that there are
consequences to all actions whether good or bad. Secondly, an educator must educate students
about cultures. Being able to except others understand all cultures is important in such a diverse
country such as America. Also, an educator must be able to help students understand the
historical events that have taken place through an engaging and creative approach, and allow
students to understand multiple perspectives of individuals in specific time periods to teach
history- social science. Furthermore, instructors must have the ability to awake ambition in
children to want to learn about how it all began. A connection I have made between the historysocial science framework is to LBS 375, HIS 301, and GEO 350. In LBS and HIS 301 we
focused on learning historical events using engaging methods. While in GEO 350 we focused on
the patterns and mistakes that have taken place in several countries and the approaches they have
taken to solve them.
The artifact I have chosen to focus on is a one-and-a-half-minute recording that
demonstrates the perspective of a commanding officer who is in charge of sailors while ZootSuit riots are taking place. Officer Isherwood is being interviewed by a reporter about the

roomers that have been taking place and about his opinion on the behaviors of his men. During
this activity, a group of three members was exposed to several primary sources which
demonstrated different perspectives, the Zoot-Suiters, the communities, and the officers/ sailors.
Then as a group one was to agree on a perspective they wanted to represent and record as a
radio show. The artifact is an example of how an educator can engage students with historical
events that took place and have them understand different perspectives of individuals that lived
at the time. The artifact was extracted from the activities done in LBS 375.
I chose this artifact because it required my group to look in depth into several
perspectives of individuals at the time and to communicate with one another respectfully and
select one perspective we found interesting, then we had to write a script, choose who would say
what and be creative in anyway possible such as adding music or making silly voices, which then
pushed us to remember this activity and the Zoot-Suit riots. The artifact is an example that shows
that I am familiar with attempting different methods while doing history to engage students,
which according to the framework is of great importance.
