In this annotated bibliography, I will discuss several websites about the topics we covered in a
previous class titled Contemporary Diet and Nutrition. The first topic that I chose to elaborate
on is:
Foodborne Illnesses
Center for Disease Control and Prevention: Center of Disease and Control
This a very well-known government agency that tracks and inform the public of all the diseases
and viruses that affects mankind. On this page that is on their website, they discuss the many
different types of foodborne diseases that are out there, (more than 250). Also, if you are
interested in researching a complete list of the germs that causes these illnesses, they also
provide you with a complete list (Foodborne Illness A-Z Index).
U.S Food & Drug Administration: Food & Drug Administration
This is also a very well-known government agency. On this page, they explain while America
has one of the safest food supply in the world, the Federal government still estimates that there
are approximately 48 million cases of foodborne illnesses yearly. Out of that 48 million, there is
and estimated 128,000 hospitalized and 3,000 deaths. It provides the reader with a chart that
covers a number of organisms, it gives the name, the time that the symptoms start to appear,
signs and symptoms, duration of illness and how it can be contracted.
Foodborne Illnesses - https://medlineplus.gov
What this website discusses is a brief summary of how foodborne illnesses that can happen, their
symptoms, and how many people a year get sick every year. This site is also good because it
gives a lot of resources for people to look at if they have a certain question that needs to be
answered.
can be harmful to the human health, farmers, and animals. On top of the summary this website
gives, there is other resources on the site that can direct you to anything you want to know about
genetically engineered foods.
Organic Food Movement
History of Organic Farming in the United States: SARE
This website gives you a history of Organic farming. It states that Jerome Irving Rodale is
considered to be the founding father of sustainable agriculture and organic farming. By the
1970s, increased environmental awareness and consumer demand fueled the growth of the
organic industry. (SARE, 2016) Even though this movement was accepted by many, it still
faced growing pains because there were no set rules, or standardization, of what was considered
organic.
https://foodrevolution.org
At first, this website talks about in the first paragraph how people are starting to gain interest in
how animals are being treated. Also, this website tells people that there is now a growing demand
for organic foods and how to boycott foods and places where the food is not organic.
