Annotated Bibliography

In this annotated bibliography, I will discuss several websites about the topics we covered in a
previous class titled Contemporary Diet and Nutrition. The first topic that I chose to elaborate
on is:
Foodborne Illnesses
Center for Disease Control and Prevention: Center of Disease and Control
This a very well-known government agency that tracks and inform the public of all the diseases
and viruses that affects mankind. On this page that is on their website, they discuss the many
different types of foodborne diseases that are out there, (more than 250). Also, if you are
interested in researching a complete list of the germs that causes these illnesses, they also
provide you with a complete list (Foodborne Illness A-Z Index).
U.S Food & Drug Administration: Food & Drug Administration
This is also a very well-known government agency. On this page, they explain while America
has one of the safest food supply in the world, the Federal government still estimates that there
are approximately 48 million cases of foodborne illnesses yearly. Out of that 48 million, there is
and estimated 128,000 hospitalized and 3,000 deaths. It provides the reader with a chart that
covers a number of organisms, it gives the name, the time that the symptoms start to appear,
signs and symptoms, duration of illness and how it can be contracted.
Foodborne Illnesses - https://medlineplus.gov
What this website discusses is a brief summary of how foodborne illnesses that can happen, their
symptoms, and how many people a year get sick every year. This site is also good because it
gives a lot of resources for people to look at if they have a certain question that needs to be
answered.

National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases:

https://www.niddk.nih.gov/
This site covers some of the same things that was covered in the other two websites, but also
discuss, besides diseases, parasites and viruses, chemicals can also cause foodborne illnesses as
well. It also covers some complications that you would have never thought that could be caused
by foodborne illnesses such as reactive arthritis, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and GullainBarre syndrome. One important topic that it covers is how you eat, type of diet and your nutrition
you should follow to avoid illnesses.
Genetically Engineered Foods: Food Safety
This website talks about what genetically modified foods are. This website also discusses about
how genetically modified foods affect the human body, how they are assessed, and why they are
produced.
Genetically Modified Foods: Learn. Genetics
This website talks about how you can transfer genes of other plants/foods into another. As well
as being able to transfer the genes from one organism to another, it talks about how we are able
to do this with modern technology.
Genetically Engineered Food: Medlineplus.gov
What this website talks about is how making genetically modified foods can be beneficial to not
just humans but to plants as well. It also gives a small list of foods that can carry good traits to
other foods when theyre going to be genetically modified.
Genetically Engineered Food: Centerforfoodsafety.org
This website discusses how we are able to take genetics from another organism to make another
dominate organism with great traits. It also talks about how some genetically engineered foods

can be harmful to the human health, farmers, and animals. On top of the summary this website
gives, there is other resources on the site that can direct you to anything you want to know about
genetically engineered foods.
Organic Food Movement
History of Organic Farming in the United States: SARE
This website gives you a history of Organic farming. It states that Jerome Irving Rodale is
considered to be the founding father of sustainable agriculture and organic farming. By the
1970s, increased environmental awareness and consumer demand fueled the growth of the
organic industry. (SARE, 2016) Even though this movement was accepted by many, it still
faced growing pains because there were no set rules, or standardization, of what was considered
organic.

The Organic Food Movement Is an Insufferably Classist Waste of Money: Organic-foodmovement-money-waste

This website is great because it gives another persons point of view who is not too happy about
this organic food movement. I can see her point. Organic foods in most grocery stores are
sometimes almost twice as much as the regular foods and how sure are we that this food has been
grown and cared for by the standards that were set in order for it to be called organic?
Organic food movement The Organics Institute
This website gives information on how the organic movement first started. As well as telling the
history of this movement, this website also talks about how the modern movement also first
started.

https://foodrevolution.org
At first, this website talks about in the first paragraph how people are starting to gain interest in
how animals are being treated. Also, this website tells people that there is now a growing demand
for organic foods and how to boycott foods and places where the food is not organic.

Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM)

American Holistic Health Association: Holistic-Health
This site explains the principles behind Holistic Health and what its main point emphasizes
which is, the healing of the whole body (mind, body spirit). This is an ancient form of healing
that has stood the test of time and even being used today in conjunction with conventional
Western medicine.
Creating Wholeness-Psychological and Spiritual Aspects of Healing: Health and Wellness
This site tells us that into todays world, it is acceptable to apply spirituality in the context of
psychological and physical well-being. It also goes into Abraham Maslow Hierarchy of needs.
Maslows Hierarchy of Needs: Maslow Hierarchy
This site gives a visual of what Maslows Hierarchy of Needs looks like; it makes it easier to
understand because it shows it in the original five stage model.
What is Holistic Health? healthy-holistic-living.com
This is a wonderful site because it helps explain what holistic health is all about. When you
mention holistic health to someone that is unfamiliar with this concept, they believe that it is
something fake or just a something that has no merit. This gives you a good grounded starting
point to help those to understand.
