Watercolor Techniques

1. -Flat Wash: any area of a painting where a wash of single color and value is
painted in a series of multiple, overlapping brush strokes in one direction.
2. -Dry Brush: Technique where your brush is fairly dry (not all the way dry)
and you use the hairs of your brush, the angle of your stroke, and the papers
surface texture to create broken areas of paint.
3. -Lifting Out: technique used to create texture by picking up wet color with a
sponge, paper towel or tissue.
4. -Wet-on-wet: the application of wet paint to a wet surface. the result is soft
fuzzy edges and bleeding color
5. -Salt- Technique for creating texture. Use wet-on-wet. While the paint is still
wet sprinkle salt on it. Allow paint to dry with salt still on it. Remove the salt
into a garbage can after the paint has dried.
6. -Rubbing Alcohol- Technique for texture on a surface. How the alcohol
expands and created a rubbery texture on the paper.
7. - Sgraffito- Technique of scratching into paper with a razor, pin, or other
pointed tool and then painting over scratches.
8. -Gradation- any gradual change in hue, value, or color intensity.
9. -Glaze - a transparent wash of color over another color modifying the
underlying color.
10.-Wet on Dry- a wet paint loaded brush applied to a dry surface. the end
result is hard crisp controlled edges and forms clearly defined.
11.-Splattering- Spots, Dots, of color created by flicking a brush or Toothbrush
loaded with paint

-Pen and Ink- Add value to your image using pen or ink for contrast.
Watercolor Definitions:
Intensity - the brightness or dullness of a color, pigment or hue
Opaque - opposite of transparent, opaque watercolor reflects light rather than
letting light pass through it.
Monochrome: A picture or painting that uses shades of a single color.
Transparent - opposite of opaque, transparent watercolor allows light to penetrate
the pigment allowing the white of the paper to show through the pigment.
Binder - is what holds particles of pigments together in the paint tube and on the
palette.
Pigment - powdery are granular substance suspended in a medium used as a
colorant.
