Assistant Professor of Educational Technology, Division of Teacher Education, College of Education, Western
Oregon University. 2012now.

Intent
I work in a program committed to providing smart, quality, and accessible education to anyone who dedicates
herself to an educational journey. We employ any viable technological solution, like captions, OERs,
magnifiers, screen readers, etc., to support learners equivalent access to materials and content in face-to-face
and online learning environments. We help our learners develop the skills and traits necessary to be impactful
autonomous learners as well as collaborative team players. We foster the ability to adapt to real-life
technology problems and differentiating learners needs and goals.

Courses Developed or Revised at WOU

1. CSE 508: Workshop: Accessibility (Developed Summer 2016). In response to growing demand and
interest on campus, I designed an accessibility workshop that will be taught face-to-face, three hours per
day, for two weeks during Summer 2016. The workshop centers on Universal Design and will teach
captions, creating accessible online content, and developing accessible documents. Enabling accessibility
from the start instead of retrofitting documents/texts is a core principle practiced in this class.
2. CSE 606: Web-based Web Site Design (Developed Summer 2012). Developed course to teach students
how to develop web sites online using WordPress. Course elements included audience awareness, basic
usability, basic web site maintenance, and including multiple media in their sites. This course became
CSE 629.
3. CSE 606/617: Open Source Software (Developed Summer 2012; First Ran Winter 2014). The course
from Winter 2014 on as a required component for the Instructional Design Certificate. Course design
focuses on exposing students to and exploring diverse Open Source platforms like Ubuntu and
OpenIndiana as well as using open source tools like AbiWord, Gimp, Firefox, and Audacity.
4. CSE 624: Internet for Educators (Multiple Revisions 2012; 2014; 2016). I have taught this course more
than ten time and revised it at least three times. Each revision is driven by student feedback as well
emphases I see students need in their work. Revisions have been extensive.
5. CSE 632: Social & Philosophical Issues in Educational Technology (Developed Fall 2012; First Ran Fall
2013). Course design focused on exploring basic and historical definitions of philosophy, technology, and
education. The course blends historical role and understanding of technology with employing
Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) and other models for integrating technology in
teaching.
6. CSE 667: Making Video Accessible (Developed Summer 2013). The one-credit course focuses on making
video accessible via captioning and audio description. Most of the efforts will focus on captioning. We
discuss and try out several different captioning tools, discuss captioning best practices, review potential
classroom applications, and caption videos students made or would like to use in their classes.
7. CSE 668: Creating Mobile Content (Developed Summer 2013). This class provides an initial overview of
the differences in creating content for mobile and non-mobile platforms. We work to convert, adapt, or
create text, audio, video, data, and interactive pieces that work on mobile platforms. This means most of
our time is creating, converting, and testing out several texts into different formats and determining the
best way to deliver those to mobile users.
8. CSE 669: Screencasting: Basics & Best Practices (Developed Summer 2013). This course focuses on best
practices for planning and creating screencasts. We use several different types of software, talk about
audio quality, scripting, captioning, etc. Much of the class is practical, and centers on creating several
different screencasts for class. The end goal is to work with and develop/increase screencasting skills.
9. CSE 692 Learning Objects. (Developed 2013). Developed and offered a course that focused on
developing evaluation rubrics for already existing learning objects, evaluating objects that met the

teachers specific age and content-related needs, and curating a collection of objects for use in their
classes.
10. ED 626 Instructional Design (Restructured & Redeveloped 2012, 2013, & 2014). Rebuilt the course to
include more emphasis on multimedia, usability, and accessibility. Including accessibility and usability
earlier in planning content is best practice and aligns with UDL. We also focused on planning media
objects ahead of time rather than for on-demand-teaching.
