Unit 5 Journal Assignment
(a) The definition for the Pythagorean Theorem states to let a triangle ABC be a right
triangle with sides of length a, c, and c. we have to think that the side have to be
opposite the right angle has the length c. then we are given the equation a2 +b2 = c2.
The distance formula is used to determine the distance, d, between two given points.
So if the coordinates of the to points are (x1, y1) and (x2, y2) the distance equals the
square root of x2- x1 squared(+)y2--y1 squared. Both of these formulas solve for
different things. One solves for the distance and the other solves for the angle. But
both are similar to each other because we have to solve with given points and use
square roots. Other then that I dont think both of these are the same.
(b) Ireallydonotrememberdoingmuchgeometryduringmyearlyyearsofeducation.I
doremembertakinggeometryinhighschool.Myteacherneverstoodinfrontofthe
classhewouldalwaysbeteachingfromhisseat.Hiswayofteachingwashim
passingoutstacksofpacketsandwewouldhavetolearnonourown.Wewouldbe
seatingingroupsandtrytofigureoutthesenewproblems.IrememberIhadtogo
homeandteachmyselfbecausenoonewasteachingme.MyfirstexamIgot100%
butIfeelitwasjustluckyorhewasjustgradingreallyeasy.Withthatbeensaid,I
didhavetomemorizelotsofdifferentformulasandlearnwhentosolveeachproblem
withtheformulas.
(c) Ihavenoticedthatmanycountriesteachdifferentconceptsdifferently.TheUSis
nowoneofthoseplacesthataretryinganewformofteachingandIfeelthatweare

actuallydoingthesamethingJapanisdoing.TheUSusuallyteachingthereteachers
toteachinfrontoftheclassandgivethestudentsthingstomemorizeandJapandoes
theopposite.Japanteacherhavethestudentsfigureouttheproblemsandhavethey
solveontheirown.IthinkthatthenewcommoncoreisnowfollowingrulesasJapan.
Letsseehowthisworks,becauseIhaveheardnegativefeedbackfromteachersand
students.Iamlookingforwardtothisnewconcept.
