GRADE 8 DINNER DANCE PARTY
Linear Equations
INTRODUCTION
You are a member of the Grade 8 Student Activities Committee. Your present job is to plan the
Grade 8 Dinner Dance Party at the end of the year. You must hire a band and a caterer, and
purchase decorations. To encourage student attendance at the event, you must minimize your
expenses. Your goal is for 300 students to attend the event, but you also need to prepare for the
case if only 200 students attend the event.
TASK
Write a detailed written report that includes all mathematical calculations and reasoning. Assume
that this report is expected by the principal for approval.
DIRECTIONS
PA 2 1 (Problem Solving Paper)
Complete all the mathematical tasks (found on pages 2 to 4) to determine the costing per option.
Be sure to show your algebraic work completely, as it will be part of the written report. Answer the
reflection questions at the end of the calculations.
PA 1 2 (Written Report)
In your detailed written report to the principal, you must address the following concerns:
Determine which band and caterer you recommend for both your goal of 300 students, and
the possibility of only 200 students.
Decide how many packages of streamers you are able to purchase.
Use mathematical reasoning and justification to support all your decisions.
Determine the ticket price you will charge in order to break even for both scenarios.
Band B, Ten Spot, charges Php 12, 500 plus Php 100 per student attending.
Which is the better option if you have 300 attendees? 200 attendees?
Plastic Eddie
Ten Spot

2. CHOICE OF CATERERS
Having heard about the plan of your committee to hold a year-end party, two parents offered the
following quotations.
Caterer A, Malbons Barbecue, charged Php 90, 000 for 150 people, and Php 196, 800 for
328 people at their recent functions.
Caterer B, Taste Unlimited, charged Php 600 per person plus a one-time fee for set-up and
delivery. At their last function, it charged Php 117, 000 for 180 people.
Which is the better option if you have 300 attendees? 200 attendees?
Malbons Barbecue
Taste Unlimited
3. DECORATIONS
You held a fund-raising activity to raise money for decorations. They were able to collect
Php 7, 500. You would like to use this money to purchase balloons and streamers from
Party City.
Suppose youd like each student to have a balloon tied to their chair, how many packages could
you purchase?
Decorations
RECOMMENDATION
a. If 300 students attend, we would recommend __________________________________ and
___________________________________. The total cost will be _______________________.
To break even, the ticket price must be ____________________________________________.
b. If 200 students attend, we would recommend __________________________________ and
___________________________________. The total cost will be _______________________.
To break even, the ticket price must be ____________________________________________.
