REED CITY Osceola County Clerk Karen Bluhm anticipates a long evening for herself
and other election personnel on
election day. She said she has
seen more interest in this election than in any prior ones during her 24 years at her job.
Voter registrations have increased, Blumn said. That alone
isnt enough to gauge interest
in the political races this year,
though.
Some of the registrations may
have been from those who were
already registered but who filled
out the motor voter paperwork
to ensure their registrations
were current. More telling is
the number of absentee ballots
requested for the upcoming election.
Hordes of people have requested absentee ballots. Bluhm
estimates between 700 and 800
ballots have left her office.
Either everyone has voted
and the precincts will be slow, or
else the number of voters will
probably be the highest we have
ever recorded for a presidential
election. Bluhm said. She suspects voter turnout will be high.
This election will feature a
couple of other wrinkles that
will keep poll personnel on their
toes, too. First, seven candidates
have filed a declaration of intent
with the state to wage a writein campaign for president. Poll
workers will need to be alert for
those votes.
Second, former county prosecuting attorney Tyler Thompson recently resigned to take
over as the Mecosta-Osceola
Probate Court Judge following
Contested races
Incumbent Republican Sheriff James A. Crawford will face
challenger David Fowler, who
has no party affiliation.
In the 97th District House of
Representatives race, Republican Jason Wentworth will face
Democrat Robert Townsend.
The winner of this race will
replace current Republican Rep.
Joel Johnson.
Three candidates are running for two open seats on the
Evart City Council. Candidates
running are Ralph Carlson,
John C. Joyce, and Rickie L.
Machleit.
In the village of Hersey,
the positions of president and
trustee will be contested. Running for president will be John
Calabrese and Robin Marvel.

Happy hauntings
Hana Graf, 3, transformed herself in to her favorite princess Elsa from the
Disney movie Frozen to go trick or treating in an intricate costume made by
her grandmother Thea Ruttle of Reed City.
This ghoulish apparition made an appearance at Evarts Haunted Park Saturday. This was the
fourth year for the popular Halloween event.
At the Evart Middle School auditorium, band members performed a spooky concert for elementary
school students Monday.
Crowds thronged to Evart and filed along Main Street to fill their bags with candy on Halloween during
Main Street Monster Mash.
Evarts Main Street Monster Mash drew crowds to the communitys downtown area to celebrate
Halloween. Businesses, community organizations and churches banded together to provide treats, music
and a safe environment, and a costume contests for people and pets. While a bonfire blazed in a firepot
and monster-themed music blared down Main Street, trick-or-treaters filed along and filled their treat
bags.
