Chapter 1: General Discussion

Cancer, the fourth Solar month, is the beginning of Summer. Its inception, the Summer Solstice, is
the high point of the year in terms of Solar and Magickal energy. The soil, which has been slowly
warming up since late Winter, now yields forth its treasures in the form of nutrients brought up from far
below the ground to the level of the roots of the rapidly maturing plants by the Earth’s stores of water,
which Spring’s growing heat has been drawing steadily upward through the soil from the land’s deep
aquifers.
At the Summer Solstice, the Sun, Who has been moving farther and farther North through Winter
and Spring and is now at His maximum Northern declination, now seems to stand still in the heavens.
Likewise, the first great surge of plant-growth that took place during Spring, during which the embryonic
and larval plants developed into their mature forms, now comes to a halt. Shortly after the Solstice the
plants begin a secondary growth process, reflecting the Sun’s change of direction from a Northerly trend
to the beginnings of a Southern one. Changing from a qualitative, developmental trend to a quantitative
one due to decreasing ultraviolet light from the Sun and increasing infrared (heat) energy of Summer,
from now until the beginning of the harvest the mature plants will begin to bulk out, growing in size and
storing food up for next year’s plant growth in the form of seeds. Spring’s tremendous rush of the
upwelling forces of life, fiery and immediate, is now replaced by the growing heat and languor of
Summer.
Among the non-human animals, the young who were born in the Spring are now rapidly approaching
the point at which they will leave their mothers and take their places in their communities as adults.
Many of them now begin looking for dens and nesting-sites of their own, where they will soon establish

their own dwellings and territorial domains. Like the plants, from which they derive the nutrients
necessary to their growth and development, they too have just ended their time of rapid development into
the first stages of sexual maturity, and now begin to rapidly gain weight in preparation for the trials of
life which they are about to face as independent adults.
Unlike Aries, which was infused with its own, inherent primordial Fire, Cancer is entirely dependent
upon external sources of energy, especially Sol. Aries lives almost entirely off sources of energy stored
up by plants and animals the previous Summer and Autumn, for when the Sun is in Aries, the growing
warmth of the year still has not reached the point at which the air and the soil can remain warm even
after Sunset. But now, when the Sun is in Cancer, the air, soil, and water are all saturated with heat, even
as Sol’s Summer heat continues to pour onto the Earth, and even the nights are often warm. There is no
longer any danger of frost or freeze. All life opens itself to the environment, no longer striving to hold on
to internally stored heat for its own sake, and not yet pressed with the need to conserve it in one form of
storage or another for itself or its offspring for the coming year.
Life in all its forms is at its most receptive and sensitive now. Its continuing healthy growth and
future production of seeds and Winter stores depends upon keeping itself wide open to its environment,
so that water may continuously flow in and through and out of its tissues, carrying the greatest amount
possible of nutrients into the organism’s body, and waste heat and toxic by-products back out of it as
quickly as possible. This gives the Cancerian native as well as everything living during the Solar month
of Cancer that exquisite Cancerian sensitivity and receptivity that underlies Cancer’s moody
temperament and sometimes painfully acute psychic awareness.
It also explains the enormous creative talent and expression of Cancer. For now Life shows its
greatest creative vigor and potential, lavishly spending the Solar energies which, so abundantly and
universally available now, appear to be endless. Winter is far away; there is no need to save, to hoard, to
conserve. So during the Solar month of Cancer, Life is at the peak of its creativity as well as its physical
growth, and on the average the native of this Sign is the most artistically creative and gifted of any.*

*To give some idea of the sheer range of talent and artistic power of this Sign, a list of prominent
Cancerian natives known for their creative works include the writer Pearl Buck, the jazz musician
Mitch Miller, the science-fiction writer Robert A. Heinlein, the comedian Pat Paulson, the actor
Sylvester Stallone, the singer/composer/comedian Arlo Guthrie, the comedian/actor Cheech Marin,
the actor Patrick Stewart, the film producer/director Ingmar Bergman, the writer Hunter S.
Thompson, the writer Ernest Hemingway, and a host of others.

Leo, the Solar month that follows Cancer, is likewise creative and emotionally volatile. But where
Cancer is enormously sensitive, attuned to everyone else’s moods and impulses, the care-giver, nurturer,
and homemaker, Leo’s finely-tuned awareness of others is almost entirely employed in Leo’s own
service. Leo exists to put on a show, and lives for the admiration, adulation, and praise of others.
Cancer, on the other hand, wants most to have his or her own little piece of Earth, his or her own private
world, where he or she is safe and protected. Cancer is delighted to share the safety and charm of his or
her home with trusted, loved friends and relatives, but isn’t nearly as happy visiting others; Leo, on the
other hand, is delighted to go anywhere and everywhere, to be surrounded by crowds of people – as long
as he/she gets lots of attention and is noticed by everyone. So much attention would leave Cancer
absolutely paralyzed with terror! Cancer’s great desire is to find one secure, comfortable place in which
to put down roots, turn into the perfect environment with his or her artistic skills, and eventually produce
a family.

by the Representatives of the United States of America,
in General Congress Assembled
When in the course of human events it becomes necessary for one people to dis-
solve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume
among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of
Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind
requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are
endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life,
Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. -- That to secure these rights, Governments are
instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed. --
That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the
Right of the People t alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its
foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall
seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate
that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes;
and accordingly all experience hath shewn that mankind are more disposed to suffer,

He has refused is Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public

He has forbidden his Governors to pass Laws of immediate and pressing import-
ance, unless suspended in their operation till his Assent should be obtained; and when
so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them.

He has refused to pass other Laws for the accommodation of large districts of peo-
ple, unless those people would relinquish the right of Representation in the Legislature,
a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only.

He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and dis-
tant from the depository of their Public Records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them
into compliance with his measures.

He has dissolved Representative Houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly firm-
ness his invasions on the rights of the people.

He has refused for a long time, after such dissolutions, to cause others to be elect-
ed; whereby the Legislative Powers, incapable of annihilation, have returned to the

For abolishing the free System of English Laws in a neighbouring Province, estab-
lishing therein an Arbitrary government, and enlarging its Boundaries so as to render it
at once an example and fit instrument for introducing the same absolute rule into these
Colonies;

For taking away our Charters, abolishing our most valuable Laws and altering fun-
damentally the Forms of out Governments;

For suspending our own Legislatures, and declaring themselves invested with pow-
er to legislate for us in all cases whatsoever.

He has abdicated Government here, by declaring us out of his protection and wag-
ing War against us.

He has plundered our seas, ravaged our Coasts, burnt our towns, and destroyed the
lives of our people.

He is at this time transporting large Armies of foreign Mercenaries to compleat the

works of death, desolation, and tyranny, already begun with circumstances of Cruelty &
Perfidy scarcely paralleled in the most barbarous ages, and totally unworthy of the
Head of a civilized nation.

have conjured them by the times of our common kindred to disavow these usurpations,
which would inevitably interrupt our connections and correspondence. They too have
been deaf to the voice of justice and of consanguinity. We must, therefore, acquiesce in
the necessity, which denounces our Separation, and hold them, as we hold the rest of
mankind, Enemies in War, in Peace Friends.

We, therefore, the Representatives of the United States of America, in General

Congress, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of
our intentions, do, in the Name, and by Authority of the good People of these Colonies,
solemnly publish and declare That these United Colonies are, and of Right ought to be

first of these is for Luna, Cancer’s Lord; the other three are for the super-fertile soils of Cancer and the
crops grown in them.

Cancer is also represented by the symbol of the T’ao (Yin/Yang symbol), a Circle divided by an S-
shape into two equal, complementary shapes, like two spermatozoa that are mirror-images of each other,
one red, the other white, each with a dot at the center of its main mass that is the color of the latter’s
complement:

Numerologically speaking, there are a number of associations for Cancer. First, its Key Number is
18. Also, the value of the Hebrew letter associated with it, Cheth, is 8, the sum of the Key Numbers
associated with Binah (3) and Geburah (5), which it links; and the sum of the values of the Hebrew
letters that spell Cheth – Cheth-Yod-Tav – is 8 + 10 + 400 = 418.*
Finally, the Mystic Number of the Sephiroth of this Sign is Σ (1-18) = 171; 1 + 7 + 1 = 9, an
archetypal number of Luna and the Great Goddesses, as well as the Great Number of Power of Taoist and
ninja cosmology, a number of Magick and battle. This goes well with Cancer’s Trump, The Chariot,
which shows a warrior in full battle-armor, riding out to war in his chariot.

Nothing is a secret key of this law. Sixty-one the Jews call it; I call it eight,
eighty, four hundred & eighteen.
But they have the half; unite by thine art so that all disappear.

“Nothing” is Ain in Hebrew – Aleph-Yod-Nun (medial) = 1 + 10 + 50 = 61. Also, the name “Kali”
has the numerological value Kaph-Aleph-Lamed-Yod = 20 + 1 + 30 + 10 = 61; Kali is a Lunar
Goddess – and Luna rules Cancer. “Eight, eighty, four hundred & eighteen” might well translate as
“Cheth-Peh-Cheth,” i.e., the numerical value of Cheth, the numerical value of the Hebrew letter Peh,
and the sum of the Hebrew letters spelling Cheth. In turn, Since Cheth is associated with the Sign
Cancer and Peh with the Planet Mars, perhaps this indicates an astrological omen – Mars in Cancer.
And since Kali is a Warrior (Martial) Goddess, this again points to Kali.
Just what the hell all this means is anybody’s guess at this point. Let me throw the kitchen sink
in by pointing out that the birth-time of the novelist Stephen King was 4:18 a.m. on September 21,
1947. Given all the references to “kings” in The Book of the Law, this should supply enough
material for exegetical analysis to satisfy an army of Thelemic scholars and conspiratologists for a
couple of centuries to come/

*This is the same Magick square used for invocations of the Planet Mercury, Who is associated with
Sephiroth 8. This reflects the Taoist assignment of the dominion of the Element Water, which is
Cancer’s Element, to that Planet.

Stones, gems, and metals:

Liber 777 gives amber, because of its color, which reflects the King-Scale color for this Sign.
Amber is also associated with the Planet Mercury, because Mercury rules electricity, and a quick way to
generate static electricity is to rub amber with silk. As previously discussed, in Taoist cosmology
Mercury rules Water, the Element of Cancer. Further, Cancer is one of the rulers of memory. Amber is
an excellent preservative of ancient life; many a Mesozoic insect met its untimely end by falling into
sticky tree-sap, which hardened into amber with the insect still inside, faithfully preserving every detail
of the animal for up to a hundred million years and more. This process, like fossilization, is a form of
natural, physical memory of the biological world, Nature’s way of documenting the lives of Her children
so that we may study them hundreds of millions of years later.

Kunz gives emerald for Cancer’s traditional stone, adding agate and beryl as stones that also have
been associated with this Sign. In addition, for July, most of which is taken up by Cancer, he adds onyx,
carnelian, ruby, turquoise, sapphire, and topaz. And for the stones of Summer, of which Cancer is the
first Solar month, he gives zircon, garnet, chrysoberyl, spinel, pink topaz, and fire opal. 262
To these associations, Oken adds selenite, chalk, crystal, pearl, and all soft, white stones, probably
because of the association of their coloring with Luna, Cancer’s Lord.263
Cancer shares many traits of its ruler, Luna, so I would also add to the foregoing such typical Lunar
stones, minerals, and metals as moonstone, coral, aluminum, silver, selenium, etc.

Herbs and Trees:

These include plants ruled by Luna, or those which thrive in water or in moist environments, due to
the Watery temperament of the Sign. Examples include cucumbers, ferns, lettuce, lotus, melons, rushes,
and water-lilies. Others include, e.g., agrimony, alder, lemon balm, honeysuckle, hyssop, and jasmine.
Mimosa and other highly sensitive plants are also ruled by Cancer.

Animals and Other Organisms:

Liber 777 lists the crab, turtle, and whale, all creatures of water; and the Sphinx, because this Sign
has a reputation for producing difficulties with speech, such as muteness, hoarseness, etc.
Amphibious creatures and those that live in the water or moist environments, especially those which
must wear shells or chitinous integuments for protection because of their sensitive, moist skins generally
have an affinity with this Sign. Thus the following organisms are Cancerian: frogs, newts, and other
amphibious vertebrates; the crab, lobster, and other crustaceans; and the mollusks, including octopi,
squid, and the snail or slug, along with mussels, barnacles, and other bivalves. Water-birds also qualify.
Glabrous creatures such as human beings, pigs, elephants, etc. qualify, not only because of their naked
skins, but because they evolved those naked skins in moist or watery environments (see Elaine Morgan,
Descent of Woman, [New York: Stein and Day, 1972] and The Scars of Evolution: What Our Bodies
Tell Us About Human Origins [New York: Oxford University Press, 1994] for more on this).

Liber 777 lists the Furnace and the Chalice for Magickal Weapons, the Furnace because it represents
the power of the Sun in Cancer, and the Chalice because it is the Holy Graal. It lists the Power of

Cancer rules real estate and the ownership thereof; inherited estates; farms, boats, fishing-nets,
crab-posts, crab-pots, fishing-tackle, and other things related to fishing as either a sport or an occupation;
pumps; spas and healing hot-springs; grottos and caves; containers for food and liquids; eggs, spores,
eggshells, spore-cases, seeds, nests, cradles, and incubators; swaddling-cloths, bassinets, and other
paraphernalia associated with care of newborns; embryos, childbirth, newborn animals, and pregnancy;
nurseries for both the young of animals (including human beings) and young plants; objects made of

cuttlefish, is ruled by this Sign.

Anatomy and physiology:

Cancer rules the womb, breasts, and lactary glands; breastbone and lower ribs; stomach, esophagus,
and the gastrointestinal tract and its functions in general; the gastric vein; the epigastric region; the
pancreas (this gland is ruled by Venus, an esoteric Lord of Cancer); the lower lobes of the lungs, where
fluid often collects; the upper lobes of the liver (the liver is ruled by Jupiter, Who is exalted in Cancer);
and blood-serum.

Psychology:

On the positive side, Cancerian traits and train-constellations include sensitivity, patience, nurturing,
caring, domestic, sentimental, conservative, faithful, stable, desirous of security, compassionate,
understanding, patriotic, highly creative. On the negative side, they include hysterical natures,
reactionary tendencies, irritability, moody or touchy natures, selfishness, timorousness, fearfulness,
tendencies to over-react or even hallucinate, snobbishness, jingoism, bigotry, a clinging nature, a maudlin
temperament, self-centeredness.

Imaginary ailments, false symptoms, morbid tendencies; eating disorders such as bulemia and
anorexia nervosa, and over-indulgence in sweets; congenital abnormalities and teratologies; indigestion;
dropsy; any thickening of tissues; cancers of all kinds, especially of the breasts, stomach, or womb*;
leukemia (the acute forms of which are ruled by Mars, the chronic ones by Saturn); poliomyelitis;
childhood diseases; emotional disorders of all kinds.

*Jupiter, Who is exalted in Cancer, rules cancers of all kinds, and any other diseases involving things that
expand or proliferate egregiously.

Ancestors; curmudgeons; cooks; wet-nurses and nannies; baby-nurses; sailors and fishermen;
bartenders; small infants; pediatricians, gynecologists, and obstetricians; embryologists; egg-sexers
(who somehow determine the sex of unhatched chicks by holding them up before a candle and studying
the embryo silhouetted by it in the egg); laboratory technicians; organic chemists; gardeners and
nurserymen; housekeepers, janitors, and domestic servants in general; real-estate developers and
dealers, and any others who deal in houses or land; and people who organize and dispense charity.

Places: Cancer rules the sea, particularly the marine littoral, and other watery regions, including
rivers and their banks, lakes, ponds, beaches, brooks, springs, and marshes or ditches where reeds grow;
cisterns, reservoirs, wells, fountains, pools, and any other artificial storage container for water or liquid in
general; moats, canals, water-ways, water-spouts, gutters, ditches, and any other artificially constructed
passage for water; hydrants, plumbing lines, and other artificial means of guiding water to a place where
it is needed; bars, restaurants, cafeterias; the galley and hold of a ship; and laboratories. In particular, it
rules homes, houses, dens, and nests; within these, it rules underground rooms and cellars, basements,
laundry rooms, bathrooms, kitchens, cisterns, backyard vegetable gardens, and the North wall of a house,
