Questions
1. A mechanism propels a particle along a straight line.

It is designed so that the

displacement of the particle at time t from an initial point O on the line is given by the
formula s t

1 2
t 5t sin t . The mechanism works perfectly until time t when an
2

unexpected malfunction occurs. From then the particle moves with constant velocity that
was attained at t . Then
a. Compute velocity and acceleration at t

3
and t
.
2
2

b. Sketch the graph of displacement curve.

c. Show that the particle comes to rest at least once before attaining the uniform
velocity.
2. The period T (in seconds) of a simple pendulum (with small oscillations) is calculated
using the formula T L, g 2

L
, where L is the length of the pendulum and g is the
g

acceleration due to gravity.

a. Suppose that measured values of L and g have errors of at most 0.5% and 0.1%,
respectively. Use approximation by differentials to approximate the maximum
percentage error in the calculated value of T.
b. Find a local linear approximation for T about

2,9.8

and use it find the

approximate value of T 2.2,10 .

3. For the electrical circuit as shown in the adjacent figure answer the following questions:
a. Using Kirchhoffs law write
the system of linear equations.
b. Write the resultant system in
matrix form.
c. Solve the above system using
elementary row operations.
d. Also find the inverse of the coefficient matrix.
4. Were interested in the long-term behavior of the population. So lets see if we can answer
the following questions. Suppose that in a given year there are 60 beetles age 1 year, 60
beetles age 2 years and 60 beetles age 3 years. In other words, the population of beetles at

60

( 0)
time 0 is given by the vector x 60 . The Leslie matrix L for this population is given by

60

0 0 6

1
L 0 0
2

0 1 0

3
a. provide a detailed description of the Leslie matrix
b. Find the eigenvalue and eigenvector of the Leslie matrix L.
How will this help us determine the long-run population? How about 5 years from now?
How about 10 years from now?
5. Write a Matlab function to solve a linear system Ax b . The function should accept the
variables A and b as input and solve for x. Before giving the solution the function should
display whether the solution exists or not. If it exists, then the function should say
whether the solution is unique or not. After this the function should display the unique or
infinitely many solutions. In the case of infinitely many solutions, the solution should be
expressed as a linear combination of certain vectors.
