All Saints Sunday

Holy Communion (Now the Feast)

WELCOME AND COLLECTION OF PRAYERS

INTRODUCTION

INVOCATION

In holy baptism God makes saints out of sinners. In holy communion God
forgives the sins of all the saints. In the assembly today we give thanks for
all the saints who from their labors rest, who have fought the good fight,
who have gained the crown. We also rejoice with Carson McKitrick and
Carlos Pagan-Vasquez as Carson receives his first communion and as
Carlos has completed instruction in the sacrament. Recalling that we have
been sealed by the Spirit and sustained by the Saviors body and blood, we
keep on keeping on as God gives us breath, to the praise of Gods glory.

In the name of the Father, and of the (+) Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.

CHILDREN are always welcome to our Worship Service. Rainbow bags

and a cry room are available. A staffed nursery is also available if needed.
An usher will gladly provide you with assistance.
As a worship courtesy, we ask that you please turn off or set to vibrate
all cellular telephones and pagers during the worship service.

GREETING
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of
the Holy Spirit be with you all!
And also with you!
LITANY OF THE SAINTS

(ELW 237)

Let us remember all the beloved saints before God, with thanksgiving.
REMEMBRANCE OF SAINTS

We ask that all present today please fill out the Attendance and Communion
registration card found in your bulletin and place it in the offering plate so
that we may record your presence with us.
PRAYER UPON ENTERING THE PEW
O God of grace and glory, we remember before you today all of our sisters
and brothers through our baptism in Christ. Thank you for giving them to
us to know and to love as companions and teachers in our pilgrimage on
earth. Help me to live in confidence and hope in you until we are all
gathered to our heavenly home in the company of all your saints. Give me
faith to see that death has been swallowed up in the victory of our Lord
Jesus Christ; in whose name I pray. Amen.

We praise and bless you, O Holy Trinity. You have taught us that you love
every being you have made, and you have established the Church, this
ageless communion of saints, as a sign of your love for all. We thank you
for gathering those who faithfully waited in hope for the redemption you
promised, and now for adding us who celebrate the love of your Christ for
the redemption of the world. Prepare a place for us among those who are
already with you. Help us remember them as an encouragement to saintly
living, exciting us to love, in anticipation of an eternal reunion.
We remember especially those saints and souls in and close to our
community who have died this year:
As each name is read, a candle is lit and a bell is tolled.

Christ says, Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle
and humble in heart,
And you will find rest for your souls.
For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
And you will find rest for your souls.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

Let us pray.
Almighty God, you have knit your people together in one communion in
the mystical body of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Grant us grace to
follow your blessed saints in lives of faith and commitment, and to know
the inexpressible joys you have prepared for those who love you, through
Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the
Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
Amen.
Please be seated.
A MESSAGE FOR OUR CHILDREN
FIRST READING

Daniel 7:1-3, 15-18

In the first year of King Belshazzar of Babylon, Daniel had a dream and
visions of his head as he lay in bed. Then he wrote down the dream: 2I,
Daniel, saw in my vision by night the four winds of heaven stirring up the
great sea, 3and four great beasts came up out of the sea, different from one
another.
15As for me, Daniel, my spirit was troubled within me, and the visions of

my head terrified me. 16I approached one of the attendants to ask him the
truth concerning all this. So he said that he would disclose to me the
interpretation of the matter: 17As for these four great beasts, four kings
shall arise out of the earth. 18But the holy ones of the Most High shall
receive the kingdom and possess the kingdom foreverforever and ever.
The word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
PSALM: Psalm 149
Refrain:

Tone:

Hallelujah! Sing to the LORD| a new song,

Gods praise in the assembly | of the faithful.
2
Let Israel rejoice | in their maker;
let the children of Zion be joyful | in their ruler.
3
Let them praise their makers | name with dancing;
let them sing praise with tambou- | rine and harp.
4
For the LORD takes pleasure | in the people
and adorns the | poor with victory. R
5

Let the faithful re- | joice in triumph;

let them sing for joy | on their beds.
6
Let the praises of God be | in their throat
and a two-edged sword | in their hand,
7
to wreak vengeance | on the nations
and punishment | on the peoples,
8
to bind their | kings in chains
and their nobles with | links of iron,
9
to inflict on them the judg- | ment decreed;
this is glory for all Gods faithful ones. | Hallelujah! R

SECOND READING

Ephesians 1:11-23

11

In Christ we have also obtained an inheritance, having been

destined according to the purpose of him who accomplishes all things
according to his counsel and will, 12so that we, who were the first to set our
hope on Christ, might live for the praise of his glory. 13In him you also,
when you had heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and had
believed in him, were marked with the seal of the promised Holy
Spirit; 14this is the pledge of our inheritance toward redemption as Gods
own people, to the praise of his glory.
15

I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward
all the saints, and for this reason 16I do not cease to give thanks for you as I
remember you in my prayers. 17I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ,
the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation as you
come to know him, 18so that, with the eyes of your heart enlightened, you
may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches
of his glorious inheritance among the saints, 19and what is the immeasurable
greatness of his power for us who believe, according to the working of his
great power. 20God put this power to work in Christ when he raised him
from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, 21far
above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every
name that is named, not only in this age but also in the age to come. 22And
he has put all things under his feet and has made him the head over all
things for the church, 23which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in
all.

The word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.
We invite you to please stand.

takes away your coat do not withhold even your shirt. 30Give to everyone

GOSPEL:

Luke 6:20-31
Silence for reflection and then we invite you to stand as we sing:

As the Gospel is announced, worshippers are invited to trace a cross upon

their forehead, then over their lips, and then over their hearts, silently
praying, May the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ be ever on my mind, on
my lips, and in my heart.
The holy gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke.
Glory to you, O Lord.
20

Then [Jesus] looked up at his disciples and said:

Blessed are you who are poor,
for yours is the kingdom of God.
21Blessed are you who are hungry now,
for you will be filled.
Blessed are you who weep now,
for you will laugh.
22Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude you,
revile you, and defame you on account of the Son of Man. 23Rejoice in that
day and leap for joy, for surely your reward is great in heaven; for that is
what their ancestors did to the prophets.
24But woe to you who are rich,
for you have received your consolation.
25Woe to you who are full now,
for you will be hungry.
Woe to you who are laughing now,
for you will mourn and weep.
26Woe to you when all speak well of you, for that is what their
ancestors did to the false prophets.
27But I say to you that listen, Love your enemies, do good to those who
hate you, 28bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you. 29If
anyone strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also; and from anyone who

HYMN OF THE DAY:

Blest Are They (ELW 728)

APOSTLES CREED
As they recite the creed, worshippers are invited to bow beginning with the
words born of the Virgin Mary, until the words he descended to the
dead.
I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived
by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius
Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On
the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the
right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the
dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of
saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life
everlasting. Amen.
PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION
In the course of the silence after each bidding, the People offer their own
prayers, either silently or aloud.
With the people of God gathered here and throughout the world, we offer
our prayers for the church, those in need, and all of creation.

Please sit or kneel as you are able.

Each petition ends with:
Let us pray.
Have mercy, O God.
Almighty God, you have promised to hear those who call upon your name.
We commend all our spoken and silent prayers to you, trusting in your
abundant mercy; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
The presiding minister invites the families of Carlos and Carson forward,
and invites the congregation to stand.

OFFERTORY HYMN: As the Grains of Wheat (ELW 465)

Sisters and brothers, today it is our privilege to celebrate with Carson

McKitrick as he receives Holy Communion for the first time, and to
celebrate Holy Communion with Carlos Pagn-Vsquez, who has been
receiving Holy Communion with us, and has received instruction in the
meaning and significance of the sacrament.
Carlos and Carson, when you were baptized, your parents and sponsors
promised to live with you among Gods faithful people in the Church: to
worship with you, to pray with you, and to bring you to the Lords Supper.
We rejoice that you have now learned the meaning of holy communion. We
bless the Lord together for your families:
Thanks be to God!
People of God, I ask you: will you support Carson and Carlos with their
families as they continue to grow in faith, and will you share in the mutual
ministry that Christ has given to all who are baptized?
We will, and we ask God to help us.
Let us pray.
God of grace, you gather us into one and nourish us with word and
sacrament. We give you thanks that through the body and blood of our Lord
Jesus Christ we receive life, health, salvation, and the forgiveness of sins.
Bless Carlos and Carson, that they may receive your holy supper with joy
and reverence and that they may reflect your glory. Through them and

OFFERING PRAYER

God of all creation, all you have made is good, and your love endures
forever. You bring forth bread from the earth and fruit from the vine.
Nourish us with these gifts, that we might be for the world signs of your
gracious presence in Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.
DIALOGUE

EUCHARISTIC PRAYER
Worshippers are invited to bow with the consecration of the Lords body
and blood, each time the words Do this for the remembrance of me, are
spoken.

PREFACE
HOLY, HOLY, HOLY
Worshippers are invited to bow through to the words Hosanna in the
highest!

Holy, mighty, and merciful Lord, heaven and earth are full of your glory. In
great love you sent to us Jesus, your Son, who reached out to heal the sick
and suffering, who preached good news to the poor, and who, on the cross,
opened his arms to all. In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord
Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples,
saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the
remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and
gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood,
shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the
remembrance of me. Remembering, therefore, his death, resurrection, and
ascension, we await his coming in glory. Pour out upon us the Spirit of your
love, O Lord, and unite the wills of all who share this heavenly food, the
body and blood of Jesus Christ, our Lord; to whom, with you and the Holy
Spirit, be all honor and glory, now and forever. Amen.
LORD'S PRAYER
Make us bold, O merciful God, to address you as our loving parent as we
pray:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom
come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our
daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who
trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us
from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,
forever and ever. Amen.
FRACTURE AND INVITATION TO COMMUNION
Come to the banquet, for all is now ready.
Carson, Carlos, and their families are invited to commune immediately
after the ministers and ushers.
All baptized people are welcome to the table to receive Christs body and
blood. If you have not been baptized, you are also welcome to the table as
Gods guest; we are honored by your presence. We recognize the Body of
Christ as the community of the baptized, so if you would like to become
part of the Body of Christ, we encourage you to seek baptism. If you cant
or dont wish to receive today, we encourage you to hold your hands over
your chest for a blessing as you come forward.

Monday, November 07, 2016
Heyer was the first missionary sent out by American Lutherans. After
teaching at Gettysburg College and Seminary he was assigned to the
Andhra region of India. A worker among the Tamil people on the southeast
coast of India, Ziegenbalg was opposed both by local Hindus and by
Danish authorities who favored a different missionary style. He was known
for caring about the welfare of the whole person. Nommensen was born in
northern Germany and was sent to Sumatra as a Lutheran missionary.
Working among the Batak people, he translated the scriptures into their
language, and honored their native culture.

BLESSING
Martin, Bishop of Tours, died 397
Friday, November 11, 2016
Martin's pagan father enlisted him in the Roman army. Approached by a
beggar, Martin cut his cloak in half and gave part to the man, whom he later
understood as representing Christ. He asked to leave the army, but was
jailed instead. After his release, he became a preacher, and later a bishop.

The Lord bless you and keep you.

The Lords face shine on you with grace and mercy.
The Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace.
In the name of the Father, and of the (+) Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.

Sren Aabye Kierkegaard, teacher, died 1855

Friday, November 11, 2016
Kierkegaard was a Danish theologian whose writings also gave rise to the
modern philosophy of existentialism. He frequently attacked the
complacency of the state church of his day, as well as its desire to be
accepted by polite society rather than be a stumbling block.
