Beloved,
Last Sunday, God moved, and God moved us. The altar was filled with survivors of
violation, trauma, abuse, and neglect - it was a God moment. We prayed as a village and
connected people who desired healing with prayer warriors, survivors, and therapists.
I want to say to everyone who dared to become vulnerable on Sunday - thank you! You
are our role models, heroes, and sheroes. Thank you for allowing God to use you in
the intimate space of our sanctuary. As a village, we have work to do if we are to truly
become a safe haven for people seeking cover from the violation of violence and sexual
abuse. We must become a village where the culture highlighted by Donald Trump and
celebrated on television is not acceptable.
The church of Jesus Christ must be a safe haven and a safe place for women, men, boys,
and girls to live free, to be fearfully and wonderfully made. As a congregation, we have
tremendous work to do to live up to this calling, but last Sunday was a God moment
where people who have lived in the shadows stood in the light, and we were all given a
glimpse of Heaven.
Thank you, again, for your courage, and thank you for blessing
this House with your testimony. You are loved, and we shall
work to make sure you are safe and valued in this Branch of Zion
called Trinity United Church of Christ.

NEHEMIAH 6:1-10 (NIV)
When word came to Sanballat, Tobiah, Geshem the Arab and the rest of our
enemies that I had rebuilt the wall and not a gap was left in itthough up to
that time I had not set the doors in the gates 2Sanballat and Geshem sent
me this message: Come, let us meet together in one of the villages on the
plain of Ono. But they were scheming to harm me; 3so I sent messengers to
them with this reply: I am carrying on a great project and cannot go down.
Why should the work stop while I leave it and go down to you? 4Four times
they sent me the same message, and each time I gave them the same answer.
1
Then, the fifth time, Sanballat sent his aide to me with the same message,
and in his hand was an unsealed letter 6in which was written: It is reported
among the nationsand Geshem says it is truethat you and the Jews
are plotting to revolt, and therefore you are building the wall. Moreover,
according to these reports you are about to become their king 7and have
even appointed prophets to make this proclamation about you in Jerusalem:
There is a king in Judah! Now this report will get back to the king; so come,
let us meet together. 8I sent him this reply: Nothing like what you are saying
is happening; you are just making it up out of your head. 9They were all
trying to frighten us, thinking, Their hands will get too weak for the work,
and it will not be completed. But I prayed, Now strengthen my hands.
5
One day I went to the house of Shemaiah son of Delaiah, the son of
Mehetabel, who was shut in at his home. He said, Let us meet in the house
of God, inside the temple, and let us close the temple doors, because men
are coming to kill youby night they are coming to kill you.

Beloved,
The third quarter has been among the busiest I have witnessed for Trinity United Church of
Christ.
In addition to our regularly scheduled programing, including our Annual Revival with
Rev. Drs. Marcus Cosby and Howard-John Wesley, a wonderful Youth Revival, another fantastic
Jazzapalooza (featuring Corey Henry of Snarky Puppy), Rev. Dr. Frederick Douglas Haynes
III preaching for Mission Revival, and another beautiful celebration of our elders during
Elders Month, we have been simultaneously implementing important elements of our major
infrastructure improvements.
Because of the excellent stewardship of our congregation, I am extremely excited about what
weve been able to do! We are approximately halfway through our Raise The Roof construction
program, and we are beginning to feel the effects. Inconveniences have begun to be experienced
by our members and ministries, as Pardon Our Progress has become increasingly a part of our
church life.
The reconstruction of our roof has been going smoothly. Weve torn off the old roof, repaired
rusted out areas we didnt know existed, put on an insulated temporary roof, and built up the
edges, in anticipation of planting the living elements of our green roof. As part of that work,
our old air conditioning units have been removed, and as we await delivery and installation of
new units, we are vulnerable to extreme rains if youve seen leaks recently - that is the reason.
Also, our old boilers had to be scraped and removed, to make room for the assembly of
new boilers. While various components are arriving and being installed, Trinity UCC will be
experiencing fluctuating temperatures, depending heavily on outside temperatures. We are
coordinating over 10 different sub-contractors as we work our way through these improvements.
Their ability to complete work depends on each other finishing projects on schedule, weather,
material availability, and the churchs schedule of events. Currently, plans call for heat to become
available to our office area in early November, and to the rest of the church by early December.
Exact completion dates are difficult because of all of these variables, so potential delays are
always possible.

We Confess
Nehemiah 9:1-7
The act of confession is one of the most powerful spiritual acts. We are
renewed as a people and as a person when we refuse to hide our sins
and shortcomings. Embracing our brokenness and walking in the spirit
without chains is a life-changing experience. Nehemiah demonstrates
how the people of God can confess and be renewed by Gods spirit and
love.

On Saturday, October 22, 2016, the people of the City of Chicago, the nation, and the world,
lost a giant by the name of Herbert Rogers Kent. He was a king among us; he was a prophet
among us; and, he was a giant among us. He was loved by everyone who knew him, who
listened to him, and whose paths crossed his for so many years.
As a teen, while a student at Hyde Park High School, Herb attended broadcast workshops
where he learned a skill that took him down a 72-year path as a radio disc jockey, and along
the way, helped launch the careers of many music greats, such as Smokey Robinson, Curtis
Mayfield, and the Temptations.
Herb loved playing the dusties and old school music and many of us spent our Saturday
mornings and Sunday afternoons listening to his radio shows and his Battle of the Best
contests, where he would play his favorite artists and go toe-to-toe against an in-studio guest
or a listener. He knew how to get the attention of his listeners and we came back for more
every week.
In addition to his love for music, Herb was known for encouraging the youth to stay in school
and learn as much as possible, so that they would grow up and be positive influences to
the next generations. Kent, known for his signature cowboy hats, was also known for the
many other hats he wore, including civil rights and social justice activist and The Voice of
the People. As the voice of the people, he was very outspoken about socio and economic
inequality, politics, social justice, and civil rights. Over the years, he received many honors:
he was inducted to the National Radio Hall of Fame; and, most recently, inducted into the
Rhythm and Blues Hall of Fame. In addition, he holds the Guinness record for the longest onair career.
Herb Kent was one of the most respected and influential radio hosts of our time His shoes
will truly be hard to fill. Our prayers go out to his family, his radio family, and the thousands
of Herb Kent fans in the Chicago area and around the world.
The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord and he delights in his way. Psalm 37:23
