Teacher will ask 2-3 questions after the video to get the children
thinking about the differences and similarities.

1. Which way do both storms spin?
2. How do hurricanes form?
3. How do tornadoes form?

Today you will learn the similarities and differences of hurricanes

and tornadoes.

Teacher will read the book Hurricanes and Tornadoes by: Kate
Waters

After the teacher reads the book she will start the discussion by
saying I am going to make a list of facts i learned from the book
about hurricanes and tornadoes. I will list each fact under the

Teacher will introduce the Venn Diagram. Class, together we are

going to fill in a Venn Diagram. A Venn Diagram helps us to
compare and contrast two things. I want you to help me look back
at our list we came up with ad place them in the appropriate spot
on our Venn Diagram. The left side will be only facts for hurricanes
and the right side will be only facts for tornadoes. In the center we
will list the similarities of both the storms based off of what we read
in our book. Teacher will call on students to help fill out their venn
diagram together.

After the class has filled out their Venn Diagram the teacher will tell
students to make their way back to their seats.

The teacher will explain the independent practice to the students.

Now you guys are going to use the knowledge we learned from
the book, video, and venn diagram to make your own venn
diagram. I am going to pass out the worksheet and you guys must
create your own venn diagram with 4 facts just for hurricanes 4
facts just for tornadoes and 2 facts of how they are both similar.
Then I want you guys to write 2 complete sentences telling me
how the storms are different and 1 sentence telling me how the
storms are the same.

Teacher will say Class, I have 4 pictures on the board. I want you
guys to look at them and decide which picture belongs with which
storm using the knowledge from our video. Does the picture
belongs to a hurricane or tornado? Turn to your partner and come
up with what you think and why you think this. After students
have had time to turn and talk allow students to raise their hand
and share some of their opinions.
The teacher will then explain why each picture belongs to it
specific storm. She will explain how we saw in the video that
hurricanes are large, can be seen from space, and has an eye or
the middle of the hurricane. She will continue to explain how
hurricanes bring large storm surges that flood roads. She will
explain that is why numbers 1 and 3 belong to a hurricane.

3.
Explore

The teacher will then go on to explain that we learned from our

video how tornadoes have a specific path that are much more
narrow than a hurricane. It has a funnel cloud and it touches down
to the ground. The teacher will explain that this is why numbers 2
and 4 belong to tornadoes.
