PROJECTS PROGRESS REPORT
Introduction.
AWSB is currently implementing several projects within its area of jurisdiction and other counties
including Kajiado, Meru, Machakos, Kitui and Makueni. Through the support from the GoK and
Development partners, AWSB continues to undertake projects to increase coverage of water and
sanitation services through development of infrastructure for both water and sewerage. A detailed
matrix of projects currently under implementation by AWSB is provided in this report as Annex 1.
The following are some of the major programmes currently ongoing:
4TH NAIROBI WATER SUPPLY PROJECT

In 2012, AWSB developed a water sources master plan for supplementing water deficit in Nairobi for
implementation upto the year 2030. The masterplan identified an implementation schedule of new
water sources in five phases. AWSB completed the implementation of Phase 1 programme in 2014
and is now implementing the phase 2 programme (4th Nairobi water supply programme) with
specific projects as follows:
a) NAIROBI NORTHER COLLECTOR WATER PROJECT PHASE 1-The scheme, under Phase 1, is to
divert raw water from Maragua, Gikigie and Irati Rivers by means of weir control intakes and
convey the intercepted raw water through an 11.7km long tunnel with 3.2m diameter to
Thika Dam Reservoir.
Supply of water to Nairobi residents will increase by about 140,000 cubic meters per day,
reducing the daily shortfall to 60,000 cubic meters. The works are expected to be completed
by June 2018.
b) CONSTRUCTION OF KIGORO WATER TREATMENT PLANT - The Kigoro water treatment plant
is a Design and build project projected to treat additional water coming into Thika Dam as
a result of the construction of the northern collector tunnel phase 1. Additional
140,000m3/day water will be treated and supplied to residents in Nairobi. The current
progress is at 5% and the date of Completion shall be 16th May, 2018.
c) CONSTRUCTION OF RAW AND TREATED WATER TRANSMISSION PIPELINES- The project
aims at conveying the treated water from Kigoro Water treatment plant to Gigiri reservoirs.
This will transfer additional 141,000m3/d (1.6 m3/s) of water to Nairobi once completed.
The procurement of a works contractor has been concluded and the draft contract prepared
and submitted to the office of the Attorney general for legal opinion to facilitate contract
signature. The works are anticipated to commence by November 2016.
