Introduction
The Problem and its Setting
In this modern generation, different people from different countries as well showcase
their hidden talents and became artists then later on influence us as worldwide sensations. Hence
these well-known artists are significant to our lives because they serve as our inspirations. They
have a unique ability to engage individuals in a very deep and personal way with their heart-felt
singing, dancing and acting.
Artists make their way through the entertainment industry to encourage and motivate us
towards our goals and ideals. They provide us enjoyment and happiness. Some came from
popular and rich households already while there are others whose patience, hard work and sheer
effort are paid off. Supporters come across the globe because they sincerely believe in their
skills.
Singers and dancers got mall tours, concerts, music videos all over the internet and record
new albums. Actors and actresses portray their roles well in their movies and television series
then hit blockbuster afterwards. They always nail their performances, surrounded by guestings in
different studios, travelling around the world to let them know what theyve got but in spite of
that still manages to have an awesome fan service through personal interaction by autograph

signing and taking pictures yet can also be in touch via social networking sites such as Twitter
and Instagram accounts.
According to The DailyPedia (2014) some local artists namely KathNiel, JaDine,
LizQuen and AlDub in the Philippines have become a hit towards youth. Meanwhile according
to Forbes (2015) several Hollywood stars like One Direction, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift and 5SOS
are one of the highest paid foreign artists around the world. Fan girls and boys go crazy as they
make their way to stardom and rock the stage as well.
Artists have such big influences to their fans whether it may be good or bad. Since
children look after them they should always be reminded of the power and responsibility that
they have, they should always remember that there are eyes always looking at them and that
whatever they do may have a positive or negative effect on their fans and whatever their fans do
may reflect on them.
Many studies were conducted in order to prove the effects of idolizing different artists
among the young adults these days. According to John M. Grohol of Psych Central, teens who
are involved in celebrity worship purely for entertainment purposes shows signs of extraverted
personality. Furthermore, he states that it is a healthy past time for most people and its basically
harmless for it includes behaviors such as reading and learning about a celebrity. However,
intense personal attitudes towards celebrities reflect traits of neuroticism and intense or extreme
attitudes towards celebrity worship show borderline pathological behavior and traits of
psychoticism. He then cites a study by North and others (2007) which state what impact of
intense personal celebrity worship which is associated with: depression, social dysfunction,
anxiety, stress, negative affect and low life satisfaction.

Meanwhile, Eliza Martinez of Global post writes, there are positive and negative
influences when it comes to idolizing artists, some positive influences are they dont give in to
peer pressure with drugs and if the child/teen chooses someone who gives to charity and dresses
appropriately and is known for doing good deeds, then the impact to the child/teen will be good.
While we all know artists dont hide the fact of their usage of drugs and alcohol abuse, or the
child/teen may see that his/her idol is skinny and always wears skimpy clothes, the impact might
be negative, such as copying the negative attitudes or habits of their idols. She also writes that
parents should help their children determine or help choose the celebrities they will idolize.
According to a study conducted by Huston and Wright at the University of Kansas, the
only thing that kids spend more time doing than watching TV shows is sleeping. Every time you
turn on the TV, go to the movies or read a magazine, you see TV and movie stars, but you may
not always be thinking about the effects that celebrities have on you. The message so often seen
in the various forms of media that tells viewers that celebrities are like royalty and should be
imitated and emulated as much as possible is harmful to teens. These messages come across not
only in movies and TV shows but also in commercials, print ads, radio programs and every other
way that celebrities use their names as brands.
According to Sternheimer, 2009 A lots of people might like to hear about celebrities
private lives, about their families and relationships down to the most mundane minutiae from
their lives, true or not. We may want to have their expensive stuff, or to try to look as good as
some of them do, have as attractive a mate, but much of the news coverage of celebrities is more
of a handbook for what not to do (like drive drunk, shave your head, lose custody of your kids,
and so forth).

Everyone else knows who they are, but we might not really like them. In fact, we may
enjoy finding out that they arent that perfect after all. In a large, heterogeneous society as our
own, we tend to have fewer and fewer social networks in common with others--except for
celebrities.German sociologist Ferdinand Tnnies had a name for this condition: Gesellschaft.
Celebrities can become a form of social glue that helps us bond by our admiration and
(frequently) condemnation of high-profile people and reaffirm a sense of shared morality.
(Sternheimer, 2009)
Tucker, 2015 said Celebrities who promote ethical behavior and make responsible
personal decisions can have a positive effect on teenagers. Some promote social justice and
participate in relief efforts when disasters strike. As long as a teenager doesn't develop an
unhealthy obsession with a celebrity or experience delusions of grandeur -- expecting to live like
a celebrity -- an interest in movie stars or famous athletes could have some advantages.
A study by North et. al (2007), which succinctly summarizes some of the previous
research in this area suggest that intense personal celebrity worship is associated with depression,
social dysfunction, anxiety, stress, negative affect and low life satisfaction.
(Khairy, 2009) said that since the media nowadays is more than focused on celebrities,
we live in the age where celebrity worship is most widely spread, for never before has the
concept of celebrity worship reached the standard it lays at today. Since it has become of todays
main factors of life, many researchers have been developed studying this form of obsession.
Some researches study the aspect of why people tend to lean towards celebrity worship, while
others study whether its a good habit or a bad habit. The idolized figures come from sport,
entertainment, and music. These domains and the celebrities who excel in them receive wide

exposure in the mass media and are further accessible via films, television, video, sports events,
and concerts. We also know that children from a very early age are exposed to these media and
events, and are able not only to relate to them, but also cognize and enjoy them (Fine et al., 1990;
Schultze et al., 1991)
The purpose of this research is to know or be aware of the benefits and the effects of
idolizing an artist. This paper reports how an artists behaviors affect the fans or young adults as
they idolize them. In this research, we have learned the reasons why young adults admire certain
artists. It is also proved that admiring artists has advantages and disadvantages. Fans, young
adults often use social media to stalk or be updated regarding the lives and issues of their
idolized artists. This study analyzed how influential artists are to young adults. For the part of
the artists, it is their job to be responsible enough for their actions because they are being
watched by millions of fans. This research tried to answer the questions regarding what kind of
artists do young adults like nowadays and how do they affect them in different aspects.
Since media nowadays is more than focused on celebrities, we live in the age where
celebrity worship is most widely spread (Khairy, 2009). Children from very early age are
exposed to media and events, and are able not only to relate to them, but also cognize and enjoy
them (Fine et al., 1990; Schultze et al., 1991). This study hopes to show and discuss the effects
of idolizing artists in young adults as they continue living their lives as a fan of a certain artist.
The importance of this research for the fans or the young adults of De La Salle
University-Dasmarias is that they would be informed of the effects of idolizing artists. This
research would help them gain more knowledge on what they do as a fan, the benefits and new
learnings as they explore the lives of their idols. For the parents of these young adults, this

research would help them understand their children more, be able to connect with them, and
relate with them as well because they would know the reason why their children are addicted to
these artists. As for the artists idolized, this research would help them appreciate the efforts of
their fans. They will be able to identify why their fans inhibit such actions towards them. This
would also be a help to make them be more aware of what they will show to their fans.
Methodology
Research Design
The methodology that will be applied by the study has been chosen in order to gather
information about the effects of idolizing artists. This study will help people understand the
negative and positive effects of idolizing artists in young adults. This study is a quantitative
research design which will be using descriptive method. This method involves collection of data
that will provide an account or description of individuals, groups or situations.
Respondents of the study
Respondents will be students from College of Liberal Arts and Communication; all year
levels. These respondents will be presented survey questionnaires as to what the research is
about. The provided questions in the survey will be close-ended questions. The data will be
collected and analyzed. Descriptive method is used because this research aims to describe and
observe the effects of idolizing artists in young adults.

This will also include further

explanations about the benefits of idolizing artists for the young adults, their parents, and their
idolized artists. This method is concerned with numbers, statistics, and the relationships between
events/numbers. It also uses qualitative research design

Research Instruments
a. Questionnaire
In order to gather the information needed and to answer the questions regarding on how
idolizing artists affect the audience or the viewers, this study distributed survey
forms/questionnaires to 50 respondents from the students around the De La Salle UniversityDasmarias campus area to know their perspectives and ideas on how they idolize some artists.
The data for this research were collected using a close survey questionnaire. The
questionnaire was created using suitable questions modified from related researches and
individual questions formed by the researchers. Respondents are given choices in each question
given wherein they would only choose the best choice that would answer the questions given by
the researchers.
b. Interview
The researchers conducted an interview with some students that were chosen in the De La
Salle University-Dasmarias. This would give the researches ideas of what an individual has to
say about how do idolizing artists affect them. An approximately 20 questions would be given to
each one of them but could still increase if some needed questions needs to be asked to the
respondents. The respondents of this interview were selected among the students of De La Salle
University-Dasmarias that are members of some fandoms in our country. It could be a fandom
from a local or from international artists. This would help the researchers in knowing the known
local or international artists these days and could also help them in finding the answers for this
study.

Sampling Technique
In accordance with this, the researchers use sampling methods on how they would choose
respondents among the students of De La Salle University-Dasmarias. Through this they would
be able to know the respondents that they needed in order to gather the information they needed.
They use simple random sampling wherein the respondents are chosen fair and equal. The
researchers also used another method which is the is the stratified random sampling wherein they
distributed surveys among all year levels to gain data and information coming from different
perspectives and knowledge about their study. They also use the convenience method/technique
to gather the respondents and let them answer where their availability is concerned. The
researchers distributed the survey questions among those students that they already know to
lessen the time they needed in gathering information among the respondents. The same methods
were also used in choosing the right respondents for the interview that they would conduct.
Data Gathering Procedure
The idea of this research was from the same interests of the researchers. They formulated this
research topic by referring to the interest that they have in idolizing artists. Since the researchers
themselves are also members of some fandoms, they want to know the negative and the positive
effects in idolizing different artists.
Arriving at this research topic, they asked for the approval of their professor regarding on
whether this topic is acceptable or not. After being approved, the researchers presented an outline
of their study. They provided one general statement of the problem and 3 specific problems from
their study.

For the purpose of this research, and in order to achieve the objectives, primary data will be
collected in two ways, a survey questionnaire and interview. Through this outline, the researchers
formulated their survey questionnaires as well as the interview questions. A total of 15 questions
for the survey questionnaires and 20 questions for interview were made and formulated.
After formulating the questions needed for the survey and interview, they need to ask for the
validity of the questionnaires that is why they conformed it to their professor. This kind of
validation is internal validation wherein the person who validates comes from the organization
itself, the De La Salle University-Dasmarias. They revised it according to what their professor
would want them to do and what questions are really needed.
The researchers also provided a cover letter that would ask the permission of the respondents
in answering the questions provided. Cover letter must be provided so that the respondents
would rest assure that their answers were confidentially evaluated.
Before performing their actual survey, the researchers performed their dry-run o pilot testing
for the questionnaires. They need to know whether the questions are appropriate for the study
that they are having. For this purpose, they conducted this dry-run among their classmates in the
College of Liberal Arts and Communication.
After the researchers performed the dry-run, they no longer revised the questionnaires
because their classmates were able to answer properly which means that the questions provided
were appropriate and acceptable for this research topic.
The researchers then were given the signal to perform their actual survey. These were
distributed to 50 respondents in all year levels at the College of Liberal Arts and Communication.
The researchers understood that the respondents consciousness may also affect their honesty and

effectiveness in answering, thus, the researchers gave them the option of being anonymous.
There were no incentives offered in the participation of answering the questionnaires.
Next, the researchers interviewed known fandoms at the College of Liberal Arts and
Communication of different artists regarding their views upon the effects of idolizing certain
artists. Some of these fandoms are the Directioners or the fandom for One Direction, Beliebers:
the fandom of Justin Bieber, Arianators: the fandom of Ariana Grande, Kathniel: the fandom of
Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla and Jadine: the fandom of Nadine Lustre and James Reid.
They were asked 20 questions regarding on how they idolize their favourite artists and how this
does affects them.
After gathering the data that the researchers needed, they interpreted these answers and
analyse them with utmost understanding and knowledge. They interpreted these answers by
conforming to the information that they gathered through others research studies about the topic
that they are presenting.
They formed tables within the study in order to let the readers properly see the difference
between the answers in each item of the respondents. Through this, the readers could already see
the point or idea of the research topic of the researchers.
Statistical Instrument
Responses to the questionnaires by the students from the College of Liberal Arts and
Communication were statistically analyzed with the data requirements of the study. Students
were statistically analyzed with the data instruments of the study. Descriptive statistics such as
frequency count, mean, percent and rank are considered.

Frequency and Percentage distribution were used to determine the percentage usually for
data on profile (e.g. level, age, gender, etc.).
Formula:
% = f / N = 100
Where: % = Percent
f = Frequency
N= Number of cases
Mean is a set of values is the ratio of their sum to the total number of values in the set. Mean is
used to get the average or central value (e.g. level, extent, status, etc.)

Social media accounts and websites also contributed in the popularity of these said two artist.
According to the website of GMA (2015), they have been awarded as the Most Popular
Breakout Love team in this years EdukCircle Awards. They idolize them for certain reasons,
like for their talent, their personalities etc. There are several types of obsessions. However,
the most widely spread type of obsession is commonly known as celebrity worship.
As time passed celebrating celebrities has become more and more active. It started since
the dawn of time when someone who was regarded as superior than the average human being
was idolized by his fans. Sportsmen, actors, actresses, artists and singers are just some of the
people that could be regarded or labeled as celebrities. Since the media nowadays is more
than focused on celebrities, we live in the age where celebrity worship is most widely spread,

for never before has the concept of celebrity worship reached the standard it lays at today.

Table 4 presents the ranking of the given foreign artists according to the first year students. It
is stated that One Direction ranked first, next is Ariana Grande and last is Justin Bieber. The
students from the first year level ranked One Direction as their most preferred artist among the
three famous and known artists given because of the popularity of the said boy-band. Some of
their songs are well-known throughout these past years and they are popular among young adults
especially the women. It also had been a great publicity of the said band when Zayn Malik, a
former member, decided to quit. Another thing is their said one year break on 2016. Ariana
Grande ranks second for she is very well famous to teenage girls of todays generation. Her
concert last August here in Manila was also a hit. As for Justin Bieber, fans are still gathering for
he is made to have a comeback and is ready to release a new album this year.
According to one of the articles of Billboard charts, because of their unique personalities and
voices that each member has; it has contributed to their popularity among the viewers these past
years. (Lynch, 2015)

The 1990s and early 2000s were the best. The boy-band market was booming. You had your
Boys II Men, your Backstreet Boys, your BBMakthings were great. Matching man outfits
were at an all-time high. Then something happened: The guys learned about these things called
"solo careers." It was a dark time. (Segal 2013).

Table 5 shows the responses of first year students regarding their preference in genre of
idolizing artists. As for the results, mostly prefer artists from television dramas and from dance
groups. Some people found joy in watching television dramas because they saw themselves as
the character. They can relate on the story which makes them more interested. This just proved
that they look at these artists as very inspirational. For dance groups, the respondents that
answered this are probably fond and interested in dancing. Watching dance videos as their

interests, some usually do dance covers from their favorite dance groups, imitating and doing
their own version of the dance.
The TV shows you watch can offer marketers key insights into your personality. For instance,
very modest people are more likely to watch the blue-collar hero show "Deadliest Catch" while
altruistic people tend to prefer cooking shows like "Rachael Ray" and reality shows with happy
endings like "The Bachelor." (Bulik, 2010). "Your personality determines what you consume,
what TV shows you watch, what products you buy, and all the other decisions you make -political choices, for example,"(Meyer, 2010). There are also some who enjoy and idolize artists
from different dance groups. These people are mostly dancers. Dancing is a great way for people
of all ages to get and stay in shape. Besides being fun, dancing has many positive health benefits.
Certain styles of dance can have a tremendous impact on your overall flexibility, strength,
endurance level, and emotional well-being. (Bedinghaus).

As for Table 6, the results showed that for first year students, the advantage of idolizing
artists is because it inspires others. For some people, artists became inspirational because
they meet your expectations through their acting. Hence, you become more interested and
eager in what they are portraying in their character, you now expect more from their acting.
They also get inspired through their looks. Because of how their idolized artists dress and
present themselves, their fans will automatically imitate them. These sometimes cause
people to be a celebrity worshipper, people who obsess themselves with celebrities.
According to Mark D. Griffiths Ph.D., celebrity worship syndrome has been described as
an obsessive-addictive disorder where an individual becomes overly involved and interested
(i.e., completely obsessed) with the details of the personal life of a celebrity. Any person who
is in the public eye can be the object of a persons obsession (e.g., authors, politicians,
journalists), but research and criminal prosecutions suggest they are more likely to be
someone from the world of television, film and/or pop music.
Results showed that people with low self-esteem saw their favorite celebrities as very
similar to their ideal selves. Low self-esteem people primed with their favorite celebrity felt
more similar to their ideal selves than low self-esteem people primed with a control celebrity.
Also, people with low self-esteem primed with their favorite celebrity felt more similar to

their ideal selves than low self-esteem people primed with a close relationship partner.

For Table 7, the results showed that first year students mostly agree that the disadvantage
of idolizing artists is rivalry among fandoms. Although joining a fandom and being an avid
fan creates more friends, its disadvantage is that fans sometimes become war freaks when
their idolized artists get bashed or insulted by other fandoms. They tend to be over protective
and defensive against their idolized artists that is why even if they do not really intend to
create war against other fandoms, they still get involved.
Fangirling is any activity characterizing a girls obsession with an object such as the
Twilight series of movies, a boy band, or a teen singer. Attending concerts, buying and

wearing concert paraphernalia, creating Facebook fan pages, following their objects of desire
on Twitter, downloading the latest songs from iTunes, and buying teen gossip magazines with
pertinent stories are but a few of the symptoms. Hyperventilating, faces contorted with joy,
screaming, and crying are some examples of fangirl emotions. (Hyman). And because of
these emotions and symptoms, fangirls sometimes get involve with what we call fan wars.
Fangirls reign from all sorts of fandoms that stretch across the Internet. From the endless
Sherlock fanfics on Livejournal, to the stalker-like One Direction twitters, to the expansive
multi-fandom communities on Tumblr there is no end in sight. Fandoms bring together
hoards of fangirls and boys to share emotions, theories and facts about whatever their
interests may be. A fandom could be about something as complicated as a series of books and
movies such as Lord of the Rings/The Hobbit, Star Wars and Harry Potter, or, if
youre really delusional, Twilight. Of course, there are always TV series fandoms; shout
outs to Supernatural, Doctor Who, Sherlock, Teen Wolf and Adventure Time for
having a pretty prominent presence. Fandoms are your one-stop shop for memes, fanart,
unusual facts about the actors and a place to express your feelings with tons of people online
obsessing over the same damn episode. These gif-making, feels-feeling, caps lock-loving,
fic-writing machines are so much more than a fandom, they are the home of the fangirl.

Table 8 presents the response of second year students regarding their preference of local
artists. It shows that Aldub got the highest reponse and Kathniel got the lowest response. Aldub
is ranked as the most known and preferred artist among second year students because of the
excitement and happiness they bring to their viewers in every episode of the so called
Kalyeserye. Another reason could be because the audienece is excited for something new and
the Kalyeserye tends to leave a cliff-hanger ending every episode which makes the audience
want to watch more. It could also be because Aldub has these grand episodes on weekends
whether it be their first date or their first time meeting each other, they never fail to always hit
the top trending topic on Twitter and have more viewers.
According to Camus, 2015 because of the unscripted interactions between the two, who
have yet to meet. The shows narrative, mainly presented via a split screen, has also drawn a

strong following online. Various articles have been published seeking to explain the popularity of
AlDub. This is because Aldub has such a light feel to it that people watch them to feel good or to
make them happy. Aldub also never fails to meet the fans expectations and keeps them wanting
more with twists in the story and more sweet moments from Yaya Dub and Alden.
On the recent episode that was aired in August 8, 2015, the episode of the said Kalyeserye

to the data culled by ABG Nielsen from Mega households. (Bayani, 2015)

Table 9 shows the response of second year students regarding their preferences of foreign
artists. It shows that Ariana Grande has the most responses and Justin Bieber has the least. It is
known that Ariana is the singer behind the known songs Problem, Break Free, and Love
Me Harder. One reason may be because Justin has come back from his long break from his
career and Ariana has just finished her Honeymoon Tour thats why more people like him.
Another reason might be because Justin has made a bad reputation in the past, thats why he had
a long break to renew his career. The researchers believe that giving it some time, Justin will be
back.

According to an article in the Billboard Charts, Ariana Grande becomes the top artist in the
U.S during that year wherein she vaults 4-1 on the Billboard 100 charts, marketing her first week
atop the ranking. She also becomes the first female artist to lead the list. She boasts three songs
in the Digital Songs chart's top six: "Bang Bang" (with Jessie J and Nicki Minaj; 131,000 sold in
the week ending Aug. 17, according to Nielsen Sound Scan); "Break Free" (featuring Zedd),
which blasts 14-4 with a 54 percent gain to 116,000 after its video premiered on Aug. 12; and
"Best Mistake" (featuring Big Sean), which bows at No. 6 with 104,000 sold in its first week.
Grande is the only woman to claim three of the top six titles on Digital Songs simultaneously,
and the first artist to manage the feat since Michael Jackson following his death in 2009. She also
rebounds 15-11 on Digital Songs with her former three-week No. 1 "Problem" (featuring Iggy
Azalea) (83,000, up 12 percent). (Trust, 2014)

Movies tend to amuse and entertain a lot of people through its animation and story setting. It also
gives the audience the feeling of happiness, sadness, nostalgia, etc. A reason may be because
some novels are now adapted into movies and young adults today have such interest in things
like that also, movies make such a big impact to the viewers if they do the movie right, a movie
is much more exciting than having to wait years for series.
Film stars eventually got a large number of fans that followed them everywhere through
social media. This is because of the attitude and character that they portrayed in the movie that
attracted a lot of people in the process. But the risk part is that the audience tend to follow the
inappropriate mannerisms of the characters that they idolize. (Yaun, 2012)

because they see them as role models and tend to do everything that their favourite artist does
and even imitate the way their favourite artist mingle with other people.
People who are famous have a lot of power. They have the power to change people, the
culture, the history, and even the events. Celebrities are leaders that people follow around and
imitate their actions.

They have been the sources of inspiration of everyone through

media wherein many eyes could see their everyday lives. (Ho, 2013)

Table 12 presents that Distraction from studying has the highest response and Rivalry

considered Distraction from studying as a great disadvantage that they get from idolizing their
favourite artist because some of them tend to be distracted by the social media that is around
them. Because they want to be updated with their favourite artist, they check their social media
accounts to know what are the current issues regarding their favourite artist.
A study that was conducted by Stop Procrastinating App involved 1000 students to assess the
effects of social media in their studying habits. It tests their capacity on how long they could
concentrate with their studies without involving social media. It was found out that 76 percent of
the students are distracted from this social media accounts while they study. (Scheneider, 2014)

Table 13 shows that respondents from third year students consider Aldub

consider Kathniel as their least preferred local artists. This shows that a great
number of students considered Aldub as their most preferred local artist than
the two choices that were given.
According to (Rosella Vargas, October 8, 2015)Whats meant to be will
always find its way. Aldub loveteam is meant to surge way up high in
popularity. The months of September and October marks a new record for
this ship as Alden Richards and Maine Yaya Dub Mendoza were recognized
by award-giving bodies. This is why, people are very entertained by these
two is because not only the kilig that they have but also values that they
are trying to inject to us Filipinos.
We all know that Daniel Padilla and Kathryn Bernardo is one of the
hottest loveteam of todays generation maybe, the reason why they got the
lowest number of third year students is because theyre fans are mostly at
high school to 1st year college students. Also maybe is it because there are

many loveteams that can do what kathniel can do. And maybe, this is the
reason why Jadine got the highest spot than kathniel. Because we can see
that jadine is more talented and has a lot more than kathniel. But two of
them have the same attack when it comes to pagpapakilig to their fans.
We, the researchers personally idolize this Aldub loveteam. It is
because their loveteam just came out naturally. It all started when Maine
Mendoza is doing her dubsmash where she always make fun of her face. But
when she saw that Alden Richards is watching her, she became conscious
and also hiding a very kilig smile. That is how it started. It started,
naturally. Maybe thats the reason why third year students referAldub as the
most preferred love team. Because aldub is different, aldub is also unique.

Table 14 shows that third year students mostly prefer One Direction for foreign artists. It also
shows that they least prefer Justin Bieber as a foreign artist. These only show that this boy band
has already taken the music industry because of the fame that they are already experiencing these
past few years.
According to (Kevin Fallon, August 28, 2014) One Directions experience on the show
actually resembles the fame and recognition they have now, which is to say they were both a
phenomenon and a flop at the same time. Young girls were instantly obsessed, mobbing the X
Factor studio each week and tweeting about the group with a rabid intensity that landed them on
the front page of the U.K.s biggest entertainment rags. But the group actually finished third on
the show in the public voting, and a distant third at that.
We can say that One Direction is one of the most successful boy band in todays
generation. We can say this because we can how many fans they have. Everywhere you go there
will be a Directioner. And also we can say that they are successful because of their many and
fully booked concerts, sold out tickets, sold out albums and many more!
Ariana Grande became famous this year. It is because of her song that when you heard,
you will have your last song syndrome. And her song is always catchy. She also have a beautiful
voice and she always rock on stage and also known with her half ponytail and winged eyeliner.

Justin Bieber got the lowest ranking because he dont have any projects nowadays. And
also some people judge him in the past because of what he is doing. We all know that before One
Direction, there is already a Justin Bieber. But Justin let his fame melt and let others took it away
from him. There are saying that he will have his comeback. Here, we can see, Is Justin Bieber is
still the old Justin that has Millions and Billions of beliebers?

Table 15 indicates that third year students prefer idolizing artists in the genre of good

idolizing artists. This only shows that young adults these days considered the looks and the body
structure of an artist before idolizing them. It became a great factor in the affectivity of a certain
artist.
Admittedly there is more focus by girls on physical attractiveness these days and the ability
to understand and communicate with any female is a considerable talent and highly attractive to
most females. (Sherrick, 2014)
In an article in Cosmopolitan, it was stated that while idolizing these beautiful artists didn't
spark an eating disorder or anything like that, some critics believe that exposing girls to these
kinds of unattainable beauty standards can be seriously harmful. (Burton, 2013)

Table 16 indicates that third year students mostly agree that the advantage of idolizing
artists is a diversion for relieving stress while the value of oneself is the least advantage. This
means that a great number of students consider idolizing their artist as their diversion for
them to relieve themselves from the stress that they are experiencing from their everyday
lives.
According to Milton Sills, being a film or movie star divert the viewers from the stress
they experience in their everyday lives. They perform an important public service,
ameliorating the dreary lives of countless millions, bringing them charm, romance, laughter,
grace, and adventure. (Anderson, 2011)
We believe that idolizing an artist can relieve stress. Because when watching someone
that makes you happy can relieve stress. Also, when you are watching you can dis regard
what youre doing in the meantime. That helps you to refresh your mind and also your
energy. Making yourself happy is very helpful when youre stress. It means that, sometimes
you need to take a break and start fangirling.

Table 17 indicates that the biggest disadvantage for idolizing artists in third year students is
the Misperception of true beauty. It also indicates that the smallest disadvantage for them is the
Misunderstandings among family members. This means that idolizing artist really mislead a lot
of people in seeing the true beauty of a person. Because of this they tend to want the kind of
body structure and face value that most of the artists have.
A 2006 study by USA Weekend found that over three-quarters of teens think that their peers
are likely to perform a diet after a star loses weight, and some 60 percent say peers want to copy
a celebritys tattoos and piercings.
The USA Weekend survey found that 13 percent of teens had dieted to make themselves look
more like a celebrity. In another exploration, teens cited pop singers as a top influence on their
clothing choices. (Jacobson, 2013)
It is really hard when the societys description of beauty is based on the celebrities that
theyre watching on T.V. Maybe that is the reason why the Misperception of true beauty gains the
most number of votes. Many people are doing some extra things likes surgery just to be look like
the artist they want to be. Just to say that they are beautiful. People cant just accept different
kinds of beauties. Beautiful for us means to be like the artists that we admire.

Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson). It may not surprise everybody that Kathniel was included

their known songs like Best Song Ever, Midnight Memories, Kiss You, and their new

it sold 341,000 copies during its first week in America back in October 2012. (Corner, 2015)
By the evidence article according to McGeorge, 2014 The Story of My Life singers accepted
the Global Success Award for the second year in a row, a prize which recognizes the insane
heights the hunky quintet have reached. This shows the capability of One Direction to be more
globally competitive than Justin Bieber mostly because the controversies and issues which Justin
Bieber participated in, became a factor wherein fourth year students would prefer One Direction
over him. Being a good role model also affects this perception towards on who teenagers prefer
to idolize. Bream, 2015 said that One Direction may not have scored as many radio hits as N
Sync and Backstreet Boys, stars of the last boy-band craze 15 years ago, but they have been able
to connect with fans 24 million followers on Twitter, 38 million likes on Facebook to
promote songs, videos and other products. One Direction tops Justin Bieber within this numbers
which also points out as a factor of being more preferred.

Table 20 shows that the fourth year students mostly prefer idolizing artists in the genre of
movie industry. It also shows that they least prefer the genre of good looks and body. This gives
us the idea that social media have truly taken over the entertainment world. Majority of the
fourth year students prefer personalities who have the capability to affect each emotion, feeling,
perception with their acting and gestures rather than personalities who does not and showcases
only the outward appearance.
According to McCracken, 2005 Celebrities are more powerful media than anonymous
models. Even when they deliver meanings that can be found elsewhere, they deliver them more
powerfully. Celebrities evoke the meanings in their personas with great vividness and clarity.
Models are, after all, merely borrowing the meanings they bring to the ad.In an age
where Authenticity is the selling value of all things, it seems the public relates more easily to
celebrities than models. It is a known fact that actors and actresses emulate a sense of
personality, on and off set: They play characters in movies and continue selling their image and
personality off set (this also applies to music stars). (VDeLuca, 2012)

teenagers prefer to socialize more with people whom they share interests with especially
regarding influential artists with fandoms that have easy formation and connection using social
media, thus, establishing quick and highly anticipated friendships with others. Fandoms are
created by fans from different places with a common interest. With a society of teenagers
idolizing artists, one is confident into sharing because of the given acceptance that can be felt in
a fandom.
According to Wiatrowski, 2014, Fandoms in the information age, have become a wellconnected global village capable of coordinated and immediate worldwide contact.Internet

fandoms can create communities of friends, lasting, profound friendships and new forms of art
that reflect our changing society and our changing technologies. (Kirby-Diaz, 2009)

Table 22 states that misperception of true beauty has the greatest disadvantage of idolizing
artists and rivalry among fandoms as the lowest for fourth year students. This means that a lot of
people considered idolizing an artist as a great factor in which young adults tend to have the
wrong knowledge about true beauty. Young adults who are merely matured & going into the
corporate world and surrounded by new-age media, the consciousness increase as to true beauty
and are dependent on what media shows.

Advertisers are aware of their role and do not hesitate to take advantage of the
insecurities and anxieties of young people, usually in the guise of offering solutions (Kilbourne,
1999, p. 129) and especially Teen-age girls who viewed commercials depicting women who
modeled the unrealistically thin-ideal type of beauty caused adolescent girls to feel less
confident, angrier, and more dissatisfied with their weight and appearance (Hargreaves, 2002, p.
287).

The researchers also interviewed some students from College of Liberal Arts and
Communication that are part of a fandom of the known boy-band, One Direction. Since almost
all of the researchers respondents ranked One Direction as their most preferred foreign artist, the

researchers came up with the decision that they would interview a fan that is a member of the
fandom of One Direction.
The first interviewee is currently a 2 nd year student of the course BS Psychology. According
to her, she has been a fan for almost 4 and half years. She is also a member of the fandom called
1D Street Team for almost 2 years. The qualities that she find the most attracting why she idolize
One Direction is because they are good singers, good looking guys, and especially they have
good personality. According to her they are humble enough to admit their mistakes and they are
always honest with their fans.
The researchers also asked her how she shows her support to her favourite band. She told us
that she would always listen to their music every now and then, argue with someone if that
person made fun of the said boy-band, always update herself with the issues regarding One
Direction through social media, and buy their albums and concert tickets as much as possible.
When she was asked if idolizing her favourite artist affects her study habits and time, but she
totally disagree with this. She doesnt consider idolizing her favourite artist as a hindrance
towards good grades and subjects. According to her, she knows her limitations in idolizing One
Direction. She gives ample time for studying before checking the social media to check on her
favourite artist. She also uses her time wisely in every task she needs to do and prioritize tasks.
The interviewee also thinks that One Direction is a good influence to her. She admits that she
imitate the way her favourite artist communicates with other people. She was inspired to be like
them because she thinks that her favourite artist is good people and a good role model. She also
narrated an event wherein she enjoyed being part of a fandom. It is during her first concert to
attend, the concert of One Direction in Manila. She felt very happy that time because she got to

meet her ultimate favourite artist and she felt like she is a member of a family that time. She
considers their fandom as a family because according to her, they have always unity in every task
they do for One Direction. That is one good thing about being part of their fandom.
She is not that active in participating in some events held for their fandom. According to her,
some of the events that are being held sometimes conflicts with her schedule in class that is why
she prioritize her tasks and always came up with the decision that studies must comes first. She
also doesnt have enough money to go to that event. But still, she tries to go to the events held
for their fandom that are near to their place. The researchers asked her how often her fandom
held an event and she answered them two times every three months. And according to her,
thousands of girls and boys would go to that event every three months.
She also updates herself with everything by checking and being active through social media
and every time that they needed to vote through it, she would spend many hours in front of her
mobile phone just to vote.
Based on her answer if it does alienate her to her true self, she denied it because she does
everything she wants. Even though sometimes she feel like imitating them but she simply wants
to because she likes their style and fashion sense. For her, they serve as her inspiration to
improve herself.
The hardest part of being a fangirl is due to high prices of different merchandise that she
wants to purchase but too bad she cant. It is because of her school expenses. However, as much
as possible, she still cant help but try to buy them as her way of supporting them.
Through joining fandoms, she met a lot of people and eventually, make friends with the by
using different social media accounts. In return, she receives a lot of updates and information

regarding their fandom. And according to them, misunderstandings do really happen in their
fandom. It happens very often especially when some of the members of their fandom dont
participate that often in the events held by their group.
They also felt bad for not being able to get an approval from some of their members in their
family. The first interviewee didnt get approval from her father, but on the brighter side, her
mother supports her. The second interviewee didnt get approval from both of her father and
mother because of the same reason that the first interviewee has, their parents find it so much
expensive. Also, some of their block mates are against it too because they firmly believe that
they have no talent to showcase so they constantly judge them.
The two interviewees pointed out that there are no conflicts between their family time and
fangirling time. Proper time management was being carried out by the two of them and they
know how to balance their time with their idols and their family.
In terms of self-expression, they burst it out vocally and liberally.
