Stop Pet Overpopulation Today!

Through SCHS SPOT program, 199 pets were altered during Sept & Oct 2016!
73 dogs & 126 cats!
Thats 1024 altered pets so far this year preventing an estimated 4096 more unwanted births
Thank you to all caring pet lovers who helped to prevent unwanted litters!

Call (865)453-7000 or (865) 680-5701

For the third year in a row, SPOT has been approved to receive a grant from an
anonymous foundation to assist with the cost of spay/neuter of Sevier County cats
and dogs. This grant requires SPOT raise at least $1000 in donations in order to get
another $1000 in matching funds. Sevier County Humane Society Treasurer,
Cheryl Morgan, was excited and grateful to receive a $500 donation for our SPOT
(Stop Pet Overpopulation Today) Program from Paul and Kimberly Stephenson at a SPOT event on October 10 th. The generosity of the Stephensons brings us closer to our goals!!
Paul and Kimberly are admitted animal lovers and have an understanding of the problem of pet overpopulation in Sevier County. They have 7
dogs and 4 cats, all of them are fixed and they encourage others to do the same for their pets.
We simply cannot adopt or rescue our way out of the current crisis of pet homelessness. Just as in personal health issues, prevention remains the
most cost effective solution and everyone should know that puppies and kittens can safely be fixed by four months of age to prevent accidental
litters, according to Spay Tennessee Program Manager, Julie Jacobson.
There are a hundred reasons to put off having your dog or cat fixed but there are ten million reasons in shelters to do it today. The SPOT Program
exists to make spay/neuter surgery affordable for every Sevier County resident and save lives through prevention. Sevier County Humane Society
believes that the best way to reduce shelter euthanasia is to reduce shelter intake and the best way to reduce shelter intake is to fix more pets! If
you want to make a donation to SPOT that will be doubled or to sign your pet up to be fixed, please call the Animal Shelter at 865-453-7000.

The Sevier County Humane Society SPOT program

would like to thank these foundations for their support as SCHS SPOT program works to help spay/
neuter Sevier County Pets and prevent unwanted
litters.

Under Construction

Shine On Spotlights!
Staff Spotlight!
Gail WerneckeGail relocated from Florida, where she had worked with the ASPCA at
temporary shelter housing for 367 Pit Bulls, to be a part of the team caring for SCHS cats.
Gail moved to TN with her family of catsBaltimore, Jag and Bomber.

Volunteer Spotlight!
Linda Jones, Barbara Russell & Chef Joe CairnsThis months Spotlight is
shining on volunteers whose help is invaluable when preparing for our annual fundraising auction. The beautiful bows and wrappings on our baskets and the artwork labels are just part of
Lindas donated time & talents. Barbaras wreaths and holiday decorations help make our annual
auction festive. Chef Joe Cairns of Walters State Culinary School volunteers his time and
culinary skills to provide the menu and coordination of the preparation & serving of the
delicious auction meal. Thank you for your contributions which help make the annual
auction a success!

Hometown Heroes
The Alpha Phi Omega Fraternity from UNC
contacted SCHS to schedule a Volunteer Day
on Saturday, Oct 29th. Because there is always a need for help, we were excited to
schedule their Volunteer Day. After a volunteer orientation, held at the Critter Barn because it
was a large group of over 60 people, the group went right to work. Several of the group members followed the transports to the adoption events to set up and help at adoption events at both
PetSMART and PetSENSE in Sevierville. The remaining group members stayed at the shelter,
trimming branches along the road, cleaning leaves from dog play yards and giving the animals
beds a thorough scrubbing. Of course, once work is done, there is always time for some cuddle
and play time with SCHS homeless pets! THANK YOU to these Hometown Heroes for their generous gift of time!

If you would like to schedule a Volunteer Day for your organization or group, please contact our volunteer coordinator
at adoptadoggie@hughes.net

Tips & Treats

Holiday Pet Safety
Our pets enrich our daily lives. Whether sharing the holidays with you
or spending time at a boarding facility, there are a few tips worth repeating to keep your holidays happy.
Be sure to do some planning for your pets. If they are traveling with
you, have their vet records available and scout out vet locations in case
of emergency. Provide pet sitters or boarding facilities with your vets
phone number & address, along with the ASPCA Poison Control Center
phone number and information on nearest Emergency Vet Clinic.
Our holiday celebrations often include different foods and decorations.
We all know chocolate is harmful to pets, but did you know turkey skin,
yeast dough or decorating with tinsel all are potentially deadly for your
pet? Stay safe. Avoid giving table scraps or human treats to your pets.
Sharing your time & love with them is all the treat they need.
Some celebrations gather us all together with family & friends. Please keep in mind, this may be overwhelming for your pet.
Please provide them with a safe area or personal space where they can escape the noise and bedlam which often accompanies
human gatherings.

Happy Tails!
Our FurVOL team is instrumental in creating many Happy Tails throughout the year. Each weekend, they spend hours at
each adoption event giving SCHS homeless pets more exposure and a chance for a better life. FurVOLs give up their time
hoping they can help SCHS staff find the best homes for the animals in their care. Some weeks adoptions dont happen, but
our FurVOLs keep coming, keep helping and are enriched for having done what they can to help SCHS pets. In 2016,
SCHS has had over 1000 adoptions for the first time in its history. As we end this year, THANK YOU to our FurVOLs,
Board & Staff members who have given their time and hearts toward a better life for SCHS animals. Enjoy looking at a
handful of the hundreds of faces youve helped this year!

SCHS wishes you and your family a

safe and peaceful holiday season.
