ENGINEERING & TECHNOLOGY MANAGEMENT

INDUSTRIAL & SYSTEMS ENGINEERING

Linking Engineering and Business

Engineering and Technology Management (ETM) is a
multidisciplinary field which connects the engineering
and business management fields. The US National
Research Council defined Management of Technology
(MOT) as:

Linking engineering, science and management

disciplines to address the issues involved in
planning, development and implementation
of technological capabilities to shape and
accomplish the strategic and operational
objectives of an organisation.

Raising standard of practice in key sectors

Going beyond individual engineering products, ETM/
MOT is also about systems formed by integration of key
components/products and their functions as technologyenabled services. ETM/MOT modules offered by the
Division of ETM (D-ETM) will help students enhance their
strategic thinking on a wide range of topics from R&D
stage to commercialisation. They will learn to:
Manage technology planning and execution

Our research aims at developing different operations

research and system modeling tools, such as
optimisation, stochastic modeling, simulation, statistics
and data analytics, system design, systems architecture &
integration, knowledge management and human factor
to address issues faced in the following thrust areas:
The NUS Business School

Project the impact of emerging technologies

Analyse opportunities created by discontinuous
innovation
Plan and execute IP management strategies
Design and implement key corporate strategies
Make decisions under uncertainty
Build and lead effective teams

Besides experienced lecturers in the Faculty of

Engineering, academics from the School of Business
also lend their expertise at D-ETM in the teaching of key
modules as well as to lead in case studies and research.
Managers from industry and research institutes are also
on hand to share their wealth of experience in bringing
innovations to the marketplace.
The D- ETM aims to nurture PhD students as future
research leaders in solving technology and innovation
challenges. Programmes in Minor and Double Major
in Management (Technology) are also offered to
undergraduates who wish to learn more about
Management of Technology.

Maritime Logistics
Urban Systems
Quality and Reliability Engineering
In Maritime
Logistics, we focus
on developing
models and
decision support
tools to improve
the efficiency
and effectiveness for maritime operations, and conduct
intelligent study on Maritime trends. The research
activities include port benchmarking, port operation
improvement, design for the next generation of container
terminal and ocean liner operations.

Research in Urban systems has three main focus

areas, namely sustainable cities, urban mobility and
healthcare delivery. In sustainable cities, we deal with
waste management and energy recovery, and emerging
contaminants on environmental sustainability. For urban
mobility, we look at issues such as public transport network
disruptions, mobility on-demand systems and systems
analysis of various transportation modes present in urban
mobility. In health care delivery, we study the public health
policy making, health care resource planning and allocation.
Research in Quality and Reliability Engineering focuses
on statistical methodologies for design in quality as
well as controlled and improved performance of products,
software and services.
A number of novel methodologies developed at the
Department of Industrial & Systems Engineering (ISE) have
been adopted globally. They range from methodologies
for quality design and control to techniques for
economy-wide energy efficiency tracking. Our research
has been motivated by industrial needs which in many
cases can only be addressed by the combined technical
and analytical expertise found in ISE. Indeed, our research
in the thrust areas has helped raise the standard of
practice in key sectors of Singapore economy.
ACHIEVEMENTS
ISE faculty members have been elected as Fellow
of the American Society for Quality, Academician of
International Quality Academy and IEEE Fellow. On
average, each ISE faculty member sits on the editorial
boards of more than two international research journals.

of the William G Hunter Award in 2007. He was also
the first recipient of the Masing Prize and has been
elected as the Board Member (for 2011-2014) of the
International Academy for Quality (IAQ), the most
prestigious organization on Quality in the world. In
2012, he won the E.L.Grant Medal from ASQ and the
Yoshio Kondo Academic Research Medal by IAQ.
Professor Ang Beng Wah is an Editor of Energy
Economics, a journal that provides a serious forum
for research papers concerned with the economic
and econometric modelling and analysis on energy
systems and issues. The logarithmic mean Divisia
index decomposition approach that he proposed has
been widely used by researchers and national and
international energy organisations.
Professor Tang Loon Ching and his former student
are the first Asian team to be presented the RA
Evans/PK McElroy award at the 2012 Reliability and
Maintainability Symposium. Besides, he and his team
have been awarded the 2010 IIE Transactionss Best

WHY NUS ENGINEERING?

My PhD candidature and current employment at NUS
is extremely fulfilling based on the kind of top-notch
research work that is being done and the kind of
exposure to research thinking that is being attained. I am
happily working magic by adding various nanoparticles
to lightweight magnesium metal unlike anybody else
in the world. Efforts are being made to successfully
merge this work with the automotive, aerospace, marine,
consumer electronics and sports industries. This is a very
unique research opportunity within NUS that enables
significant interaction with other researchers and
engineers at all levels for the purpose of knowledge and
skill combination on a grand level.

The PhD programme in Civil Engineering

Department gave me my first taste of research, an
experience which I greatly appreciate. I treasure
most, the confidence which this PhD programme
instills in me. It has enabled me to learn and work
independently. And of course, being a NUS student,
there are attractive bonuses a multi-cultural
environment, world-class professors, chance to
participate in international conferences and
the Presidents Graduate scholarship! My PhD
journey in NUS is not entirely rosy, but it is worth
it. I believe that it will be beneficial for me in the
future, whichever path I may take.

Industrial and Systems Engineering
The graduate programme challenges us to apply
engineering principles in biological research from
the sub-cellular to tissue to organ systems level. We
also get to learn from the experts in various fields in
Bioengineering. There are plenty of opportunities for us
to find our own niche areas to focus our research.

The graduate programme equips

me with the in-depth knowledge

my research.Academic staff
members and my peers are a
continual source ofencouragement.
They helped me to raise my ability
to match my creativity. This is often
the spark of genius that leads to
innovation. In short, my experience

ABOUT SINGAPORE

elcome to Singapore, where

crossroads of the world merge.
Culturally rich, Singapore has a
multi-racial population of about 5 million, with diverse
religious beliefs ranging from Buddhism, Christianity
and Islam to Hinduism and Taoism. The many races
live together in harmony and it is this ethnic diversity
that is one of Singapores strengths.
Despite its size, just 704 sq km, Singapore which
comprises 63 smaller islands, is a popular travel
destination with tourism as one of its largest industries.
The sunny island with an average temperature of
27 deg C and a relative humidity of 84.3 per cent
has an average of 10 million visitors each year.

Singaporeans are big on pastimes such as shopping and

eating, there being such a variety of mouthwatering fare to
suit even the most discerning taste buds. Though shopping
malls at residential estates are popular, Orchard Road with
its modern shopping complexes and dining places is still
the place for weekenders.
Other places of interest include Chinatown and Little India
with their quaint shops and eateries. However, in recent
times, many other little enclaves have sprouted
including Little Thailand and Little Myanmar. Southeast
Asias first movie theme park, Universal Studios Singapore
is now open in Sentosa, an island off Singapore that
is easily accessible by car, bus, cable car and monorail.
You can also choose to walk across the scenic link way.
