Filipino genre filmmaking.

Short Synopsis
Karate-kickin midgets! Paper-mch monsters! Busty babes with blades! Filipino genre films of
the '70s and '80s had it all.

Philippines was a dreamland for exploitation filmmakers whose renegade productions were soon
engulfing drive-in screens around the globe like a tidal schlock-wave!
At last, the all-too-often overlooked world of drive-in filler from Manila gets the Mark Hartley
(NOT QUITE HOLLYWOOD) treatment in Machete Maidens Unleashed!. This is the ultimate
insiders' account of a faraway backlot where stunt men came cheap, plot was obsolete and the
make-up guy was packin heat!
Machete Maidens Unleashed! features interviews with cult movie icons Roger Corman, Joe
Dante, John Landis, Sid Haig, Eddie Romero and a large assembly of cast, crew and critics,
each with a jaw-dropping story to tell about filmmaking with no budget, no scruples,
no boundaries and - more often than not - no clothes.
Strap yourselves in - and join us for a non-stop Filipino femme-fest, all the way from the jungles
of the Pacific via the trash cans of the critics!

MACHETE MAIDENS UNLEASHED!: Synopsis

One Page Synopsis
Machete Maidens Unleashed! is the first detailed examination and celebration of Filipino genre
filmmaking a world where stunt men came cheap, plot was obsolete and the make-up guy was
packin heat!
From the early '70s well into the '90s the Philippines was a back-lot for a bevy of renegade Bmovie makers and cinema visionaries alike. The country was utilized for its inexpensive labour,
exotic locations and distinct lack of rules. A tidal schlock-wave of genre work emerged that
somehow managed to capture the raw, chaotic energy of contemporary Filipino culture. These
productions (a cavalcade of monster movies, jungle prison movies, blaxploitation and kung fu
hybrids) were miraculously made at a time when the country's political situation was repressive
at best. But, this was a revolution that even the Marcos dictatorship couldnt crush!
Machete Maidens Unleashed! begins with the partnership of acclaimed local filmmakers Gerry
de Leon and Eddie Romero whose gore-drenched BLOOD ISLAND trilogy went straight from
jungles of the Pacific to the trash cans of the critics, but in the process found large and
enthusiastic drive-in audiences across America.
When legendary maverick producer Roger Corman was introduced to Romero and de Leon he
instantly discovered the Philippines was economically suited to low budget filming. Corman
quickly set up camp and produced a number of highly successful "Woman In Prison" films
starring genre favourites Pam Grier and Sid Haig.
Throughout the 70s and 80s the appetites of thrill-hungry cinemagoers around the globe
continued to be satisfied by prolific local auteurs Cirio H. Santiago (TNT JACKSON) and Bobby
A. Suarez (CLEOPATRA WONG) and in the late 1970s Francis Ford Coppola re-invigorated
a whole new epoch of filmmaking by choosing to shoot the infamously troubled production,
APOCALYPSE NOW in the Philippines.
Our journey climaxes in 1981 when this country fights back and reclaims its very own special
national identity via the inaugural Manila International Film Festival and accompanying Film
Market. Conceived to showcase the Philippine's glorious screen culture, the market's biggest
success was FOR Y'UR HEIGHT ONLY, a low budget, home-grown James Bond spoof starring
an 83cm primordial dwarf named Weng Weng. The film sold to countless international territories
and is now arguably the most well known exemplar of the Filipino genre film abroad.
Machete Maidens Unleashed! is everything you ever wanted to know about drive-in filler from
Manila! The ultimate insiders' account of genre filmmaking in the Philippines, it boasts a role call
of local and international survivors from this period, including many visiting American B-movie
starlets who were totally unprepared for this devil-may-care school of filmmaking. Sitting
alongside the talking heads are a dazzling array of outrageous film clips from key Philippineslensed productions. This is the ultimate Filipino femme-fest!

MACHETE MAIDENS UNLEASHED!: Directors Statement

MARK HARTLEY Writer/Director/Co-Editor
When I was first invited to join this project it was focussed on the story of a Filipino dwarf actor
named Weng Weng who had appeared in a number of so-bad-theyre-good James Bond spoofs.
To be honest I knew very little about Weng Weng or genre filmmaking in the Philippines, but the
producer thought that the aesthetic I had brought to my debut feature doc, NOT QUITE
HOLLYWOOD, would be perfect to tell this incredibly strange tale.
NQH had explored a niche subject matter Australian exploitation films and I really had no
interest in telling an even more obscure story. But I was getting flown to Queensland for a
meeting so I thought I should at least do some research so I appeared to know what I was
talking about when I declined the offer to direct this documentary.
However, after hitting the world wide web, I quickly discovered there was a broader and more
interesting (at least to me) story to explore.
In 1972 President Marcos declared Martial Law in the Philippines and with military might took
control of all facets of day to day life in that country - including control of the media. In a nutshell
the Philippines was in the grip of a brutal dictatorship. Fighting back was forbidden, chaos was
contained, indecency was punished and there was absolutely no sign of revolution yet, these
were the key ingredients of the Women in Prison films that the legendary b-movie mogul, Roger
Corman, was producing over there at that time!
I thought if I could re-invent this documentary to be predominantly a fish-out-of-water story about
a motley group of Americans going over to this very dangerous foreign land (for the sake of
saving a few bucks) and producing subject matter that was outlawed over there, then that would
certainly be a documentary I would be keen to be involved in. I figured it would also provide an
interesting back-story to a cavalcade of jaw-dropping clips from the films produced by Corman
and others at this time.
It would also provide me with an opportunity to meet some of my childhood film idols, as
filmmakers like Joe Dante (Gremlins), Allan Arkush (Rock N Roll High School) and Steve
Carver (Lone Wolf McQuade) were all working for Corman at the time and involved in the
marketing of his Filipino productions. Recruiting John Landis (An American Werewolf In London)
as a genre specialist was also a major thrill for me.
Thankfully the producer and the broadcaster liked my take on this tale and the whirlwind
began. The project took me and the core crew from NQH around the globe as we raced on a
tight budget and short schedule to document this wild, untold story - battling along the way
extreme blizzards, deaths of interviewees and the unpredictable nature of shooting in the
Philippines. Hopefully that adventure is reflected in some small way in whats up on the screen.
Enjoy.

MACHETE MAIDENS UNLEASHED!: Producers Statement/Making of Notes

VERONICA FURY Producer
I first came across the story when I met Andrew Leavold of Trash Video fame. I was interviewing
him for another project I was developing and he was wearing a t-shirt embossed with the slogan
The Search for Weng Weng. I asked him who that was. Andrew told me he had been travelling
to the Philippines in a crazy quest to find out what happened to his favourite Filipino B grade
movie star Weng Weng a pint sized James Bond parody. I was smitten with the story!
After some persuasion we brought in renowned Not Quite Hollywood director Mark Hartley.
This inspired us to explore producing an essay style documentary on this important era - the
history of American B Grade exploitation filmmaking in the Philippines under the Marcos regime
and MACHETE MAIDENS UNLEASHED! was born.
Amanda Duthie, ABC Commissioning Editor and Head of Entertainment and the Arts
championed the project and soon MIFF Premire funds were attached Screen Australia,
Screen Queensland, and Film Vic secured the deal. The next step was not easy - we had a brief
to make a complex genre history film for a broad audience and we only had 8 months to make it
in time for MIFF 2010 premire!
We pulled in the whole creative team from NOT QUITE HOLLYWOOD why reinvent the wheel
and with Line Producer Melissa Hines ruling the roost we finished the film in record time.
The result is a well balanced film that is at once funny, informative and historically relevant. It
works for both genre fans and a general audience. To Mark Hartleys credit the film is
intelligently crafted and tightly edited with his co-editor Sara Edwards. Jamie Blanks score helps
drive the tight titillating story along.
Hey, lets go where the action is!

MAMA, he turned his talents to the small screen writing for shows
as diverse as THE BIONIC WOMAN and LAW & ORDER.
Patrick Wayne - Actor
Boasting a square jaw, blue eyes and 62 frame, there was no
doubt actor Patrick Wayne would end up in the Philippines battling
humanoid fish creatures in BEYOND ATLANTIS.
As well as appearing in a large number of westerns many
alongside his father, John Wayne Patrick starred in the largescale fantasy adventures SINBAD AND THE EYE OF THE TIGER
and THE PEOPLE THAT TIME FORGOT.
Celeste Yarnall - Actress
Boasting a CV full of ultra cool cult TV credits (including THE
WILD, WILD WEST, THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. and STAR
TREK) as well as roles in BOB & CAROL & TED & ALICE and
LIVE A LITTLE, LOVE A LITTLE, Celeste went from being wooed
by both Elvis Presley and Captain Kirk to being terrorised by a
paper-mch-faced monster in BEAST OF BLOOD (1971).
Celeste didnt think of this as a career hiccup until she discovered
her dressing room in the Philippines was a cave that also doubled
as the mens latrine!
