ASSIGNMENTS AND GRADING

A. Worksheets

Nine take-home computational and interpretive worksheets must be

turned in by the due dates listed below. The worksheets are in the
back of your book. Each worksheet turned in by its due date and
not receiving full credit, may be resubmitted. No resubmit will be
given for a worksheet turned in after its due date. One resubmit per
worksheet.

3/10
3/24
4/21

There will be two take-home, open-book examinations.

The first exam will cover the material in Chapters 2-4. DUE 3/10.
TOTAL: 60 POINTS The second exam will cover the material in
Chapters 5, 7, and 8 (not Ch. 6).
DUE 4/28. TOTAL: 60 POINTS.
TAKE HOME EXAMS ARE ON THE HONOR SYSTEM. DO NOT
DISCUSS EXAMS WITH ANYONE. ACCORDING TO UNIVERSITY
GUIDELINES, DISCUSSING AN EXAM IN ANY WAY WITH ANYONE
IS AN ACT OF ACADEMIC DISHONESTY.
Note: Missed items may be resubmitted once (Exam 1 resubmit
due 3/17; Exam 2 resubmit due 5/1).

C. Data Analysis

Take a set of data (20-40 scores) from your classroom or work or life
experiences and do a descriptive analysis which includes:
A Stem and Leaf Plot
Mean, Median, and Mode
Standard Deviation
Interpretation of each of the above statistics
a. What does each statistic (mean, median, mode and
standard deviation) tell you about your data set?
b. What type of distribution do you have (symmetrical,
positive skew, or negative skew)?
c. Which measure of central tendency would be most
appropriate for your data set?
Conclusions (Implications) about your data set drawn from
this analysis, i.e., Were the results good or bad, any
modifications/corrections necessary, any outliers? etc.
DUE 2/24. Note: This analysis may be resubmitted once if in by the
due date.
TOTAL: 30 POINTS.

D. Research Critique

Select a research article from a professional journal of your choice.

Critique the article according to the form in the back of your book.
DUE 4/14 Note: The critique may be resubmitted once if in by the
due date.
TOTAL: 20 POINTS.

Disposition:
1. Indicate a more positive attitude toward ones own mathematical ability, and toward
statistics research and assessment in general.
2. Develop a more critical view of research, i.e., not to take results at face value.

Performances:
1. Interpret frequency distributions including: bar graph, histogram, frequency polygon,
curve, frequency table, and stem and leaf plot.
2. Interpret the following statistical procedures: mean, median, mode, variance, standard
deviation, quartile, Z score, Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient, reliability,
validity, standard error of measurement, one variable regression equation, t-test, chi
square, and analysis of variance.
