Lesson Content
What Standards (national
or state) relate to this
lesson?
(You should include ALL
applicable standards. Rarely
do teachers use just one:
theyd never get through
them all.)
Essential Understanding
(What is the big idea or
essential question that you
want students to come away
with? In other words, what,
aside from the standard and
our objective, will students
understand when they finish
this lesson?)
Objectives- What are you
teaching?
(Student-centered: What will
students know and be able to
do after this lesson? Include
the ABCDs of objectives:
action, behavior, condition,
and degree of mastery, i.e.,
"C: Given a sentence written
in the past or present tense,
A: the student B: will be able
to re-write the sentence in
future tense D: with no errors
in tense or tense contradiction
(i.e., I will see her
yesterday.)."

SC.5.N.1.3 Recognize and explain the need for repeated experimental trials.
SC.5.N.2.2 Recognize and explain that when scientific investigations are carried out, the
evidence produced by those investigations should be replicable by others.
SC.5.N.1.4 Identify a control group and explain its importance in an experiment.

How can you use the scientific method to solve a problem?

Students will use their knowledge of the scientific method to conduct and experiment so
solve a problem.

Note: Degree of mastery does

not need to be a percentage.)
Rationale
Address the following
questions:
Why are you teaching this
objective?
Where does this lesson fit
within a larger plan?
Why are you teaching it
this way?
Why is it important for
students to learn this
concept?
Evaluation Plan- How will
you know students have
mastered your objectives?

This lesson is being taught in order to prepare the students for their stem fair projects
using the scientific method.

During the experiment through repeated trials to see if the students can save Fred using
the Scientific Method. The students will be filling out a graphic organizer to demonstrate
their thoughts. After the experiment has concluded we will engage in a classroom
discussion on what they have learned.

Address the following:

What formative evidence
will you use to document
student learning during
this lesson?
What summative evidence
will you collect, either
during this lesson or in
upcoming lessons?
What Content Knowledge
is necessary for a teacher
to teach this material?

Students should be familiar with the Scientific Method steps and vocabulary.
Students should also have some exposure to Newtons Law

What background
knowledge is necessary for
a student to successfully
meet these objectives?

Group
Size:20

Date of Lesson: 10/26/17

Students should be able to problem solve and work together in groups/partners.

How will you ensure

students have this
previous knowledge?
Who are your learners?
What do you know about
them?
What do you know about
their readiness for this
content?
What misconceptions
might students have about
this content?
Teaching Methods
(What teaching method(s) will
you use during this lesson?
Examples include guided
release, 5 Es, direct
instruction, lecture,
demonstration, partner word,
etc.)
Step-by-Step Plan
(What exactly do you plan to
do in teaching this lesson? Be
thorough. Act as if you needed
a substitute to carry out the
lesson for you.)

Students may get results and conclusions confused with each other. Students may have
a misconception about what is testable and what is an opinion.
Lesson Implementation
I will begin the lesson reviewing the scientific method and then let the students work in
groups of 2 to test their experiments. At the end of the lesson, we will come together in a
group and have a group discussion.

Time
30-45
min

Who is
responsibl
e (Teacher
or
Students)?

Each content area may require a different step-by-step format. Use

whichever plan is appropriate for the content taught in this lesson.
For example, in science, you would detail the 5 Es here
(Engage/Encountering the Idea; Exploring the Idea;
Explanation/Organizing the Idea; Extend/Applying the Idea;
Evaluation).

Where applicable, be sure to
address the following:
What Higher Order
Thinking (H.O.T.) questions
will you ask?
How will materials be
distributed?
Who will work together in
groups and how will you
determine the grouping?
How will students
transition between
activities?
What will you as the
teacher do?
What will the students do?
What student data will be
collected during each
phase?
What are other adults in
the room doing? How are
they supporting students
learning?
What model of co-teaching
are you using?

Materials:
Gummy worms (1 per group) (10 groups)
Gummy Jolly Ranchers (1 for each group) (10 groups)
Paper clips (4 clips per group) (10 groups)
Clear plastic
Graphic organizer
Paper
Youtube video https://youtu.be/bUa-ilQqEv0

Be prepared before the lesson with the supplies in the back of

the room. 10 graphic organizers, 10 cups with 1 worm, 1
gummy ring, and 4 paper clips inside each cup.
Start lesson by reviewing what we learned about the
Scientific method the day before (focus on results vs
conclusion since there was some confusion between the two)
Play the Youtube video (Scientific Method Rap)
Explain to the class that you will be working in pairs (predetermined groups of 2) and have one member of each group
go to the back table to grab one cup and a graphic organizer
and return to their desks
Read the short story about saving Fred
Read the Problem box that explains the experiment
Display the image on how the experiment should be set up
Using the graphic organizer, have them explain each step of
their experiment (pictures included)
*** If time permits*** have the students use the back of their
graphic organizers and explain their test results at the top of the
paper and at the bottom of the paper explain their conclusion

After the experiment bring the class together for a group

discussion on what they have learned and how they solved

the problem using the scientific method

Be sure to let the students share to the class their ideas and
questions

What will you do if

a student struggles with the content?

If students are struggling, they may use their notes flip chart notes from the
day before. Individual assistance and time will be available if needed. The
students are already working in pairs, if for some reason the pair is struggling
they may also work with another group on a case by case basis.

What will you do if

a student masters the content quickly?

If the students master the content quickly, they can use the back of their
graphic organizers and explain their test results at the top of the paper and at
the bottom of the paper explain their conclusion

Meeting your students

needs as people and as
learners

If applicable, how does this lesson connect to the interests and cultural
backgrounds of your students?
This lesson contains candy which will engage their interests. This lesson
includes their cultural background because these contain elements that are
found within their culture.
If applicable, how does this lesson connect to/reflect the local community?
This connects to the community because it the students are working to save a
worm from drowning, which is developing problem solving skills, collaboration
works on creating a sense of community, and they are working together to
save a life which reflects good citizen skills.
How will you differentiate instruction for students who need additional
challenge during this lesson (enrichment)? For enrichment, they can use the
back of their graphic organizers and explain their test results at the top of the
paper and at the bottom of the paper explain their conclusion. They may also
try to create an additional experiment using the same materials and rules but
have the setup be completely different from the original.

Accommodations (If
needed)
(What students need specific
accommodation? List
individual students (initials),
and then explain the
accommodation(s) you will
implement for these unique
learners.)

(What materials will you use?
Why did you choose these
materials? Include any
resources you used. This can
also include people!)

How will you differentiate instruction for students who need additional
language support?
If needed translated materials, individual assistance and time will be provided
if needed. They are already working with a partners, but may work in a larger
group if needed.
J & Z may have to work together on this project. Individual assistance may also be
needed for this group.
